Access & inclusion awards 2015 TWEED SHIRE Celebrating International Day of People with Disability Tweed Shire Council presents Recognising and acknowledging action by individuals, community groups, organisations and businesses that build and promote an accessible and inclusive Tweed community. The Belonging Award - Recognising Achievement in supporting and including families with young children who have special needs. An accessible and inclusive community means creating possibilities. It enables people to live lives according to individual interests, needs and aspirations - being able to physically move around the community and feel included as a member of the community. It involves access to buildings, festivals, events and open space such as streetscapes and parks, and inclusion in arts and culture, leisure, sports, education, employment and social life. 3 December 2015

Tweed Shire Council presents

Recognising and acknowledging action by individuals, community groups, organisations and businesses that build and promote an accessible and inclusive Tweed community.

The Belonging Award - Recognising Achievement in supporting and including families with young children who have special needs.

An accessible and inclusive community means creating possibilities. It enables people to live lives according to individual interests, needs and aspirations - being able to physically move around the community and feel included as a member of the community. It involves access to buildings, festivals, events and open space such as streetscapes and parks, and inclusion in arts and culture, leisure, sports, education, employment and social life.

Guest speakerGuest speaker Graeme Innes is an international champion for people with disability. Graeme was Australia’s Disability Discrimination Commissioner and helped draft the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

PerformersMC Kristian Keogh will also show his talents as a jazz singer and pianist, performing on a grand piano generously supplied by the Northern Rivers Symphony Orchestra

The South Sea Islander Dancers will hit the stage to close the night, fresh from conducting a pre-ceremony workshop to teach participants a few new moves.

The Alstonville-based La Fontanella Recorder Choir was formed in 2008 from participants in the University of the Third Age class. The choir features music tutor and multi-instrumentalist Robert Dingle, who studied and performed in London and whose eyesight began to fail in the 1990s.

PatronThe access awards’ new patron, five-time world champion Bill Chaffey, was an able-bodied triathlete when he was struck on his bike by a truck, setting him on course to become an international star in paratriathlon.
