About Research and Training Institute (RTI) for Livestock Development Research and training institute was established in 1990-1991. The institute is located in Tando
Mohammad Khan at the distance of 16 km from T. M. Khan city, on Sujawal road. The basic aim of
establishment of this institution was to collect basic information regarding livestock in rural Sindh and
conduct problem oriented research. The research then should be applied by organizing different
training programs for livestock farmers as well as Veterinary Doctors for their capacity building and
skill enhancement. Training programs are organized in such a manner that the farmers can be
introduced to modern scientific technologies to improve the worth of their animals and get more
profit from them. The institute also works in collaboration with Government and non-Government
organizations to organize different types of trainings. Benazir Bhutto Shaheed Youth Development
Program (BBSYDP), Livestock and Fisheries Department, Government of Sindh, NRSP, HDF, THDP, RDF,
Engro Foundation, UNDP, FAO, HDF, PDI, ACTED, IRC, Islamic Relief Fund and many other organizations
were counter part of the Institution in the past. RTI is currently working with BBSYDP and RSPN.

Message from Director - Animal Husbandry (AH)
Training is the most fundamental part in livestock sector and is an important component in the
strategy to achieve organizational objectives over the years, experience have shown that enabling
trainings to acquire technical knowledge and skills are the basic capacity building tools and is influence
on the wellbeing of society by poverty elevation.
RTI is a leading capacity building forum in Pakistan Its aim is to strengthen skills of youth and support
their families. RTI serves to livestock & Poultry farmers in respect to impart fundamental information
regarding breeding, management, nutrition, health coverage and marketing for the improvement of
milk and meat production to enhance the income of disadvantage section of the society through
sustainable development.
Directorate of Animal Husbandry in the name of RTI has worked in collaboration with different public
and private organizations to developed, designed and implemented different courses for the livestock
& Poultry farmers, community activist, and professionals to develop technical knowledge and skill of
community; We believe that trained and mature human resources in Sindh and Pakistan will ultimate
contribute in the development of livestock farming.
CLEWs training plays key role to achieve our objectives. This is the only way to improve health and
production of animal, which is possible either by Nutrition or management. Also breeding
management mainly the Artificial Insemination improves genetic characters which enable animals to
achieve peak levels of production.
Hope fully the elite manpower trained by RTI will serve for the betterment of livestock and ultimately
for the nation by applying the technique which they learnt during their entire training period.
Dr. Ahtisham ul Haq Rana
Director Animal Husbandry
Introduction Two moths CLEWs training was scheduled for community livestock extension workers (CLEWs) at
Research and Training Institute, Tando Muhammad Khan. The training aims to empower human
resources by providing them technical knowledge and skills about basics of animal husbandry, artificial
insemination, care and management of animals during normal conditions and outbreak. Events were
organized by Rural support programmes network (RSPN) in collaboration with NRSP, TRDP and SRSO.
Total 97 Trainees from different districts of Sindh 13 Dadu, 12 Jamshoro, 12 Tando Allahyar, 09 Thatta,
09 Sujawal, 10 Tando Muhammad Khan, 06 Matiari, 08 Larkana, 08 Shikarpur, 10 Kambar Shadadkot
were trained during two training events each 60 days. Trainees belong to three different organizations
i.e. NRSP 46, TRDP 25, SRSO 26 respectively. Targeted community belonged to 97 UCs from 10 districts
were selected for training. Participants act as activists for their community to convey messages related
to health and production of animals by keeping advised management measures to save life of animals
and can maximize utilization of natural resources.

According to the reports of FAO (world expert forum 2009) the predicted world’s population within
developing countries will reach 9.1 billion by 2050 which is 34 percent higher than today (Fig 1). Largely
most of that population about 70 percent will be in urban areas. Also food production needs will be
increased up to 70 percent by 2050 to achieve the marginal levels of healthy food consumption. It is
major task for the food industries
worldwide to provide healthy food
and prevent malnutrition.
Malnutrition is the state produced
due to eating low nutrient food or
incorrect proportions of nutrients
within the food.
Figure-1. Worldwide human growth ratio (in billions)
Pakistan is an agricultural country more than 70 percent population depends upon agriculture,
according to the recent reports of Ministry of finance Government of Pakistan the livestock shares
58.33% as compared to the agriculture value added (19.5%) in national GDP. Pak Dairy Info states that
we have about 39.7, 34.6, 29.09, 66.49 and 1.0 million heads of cattle, buffaloes, sheep, goat and camel
in Pakistan respectively, with livestock growth rate 3.43 % as compare to 3.30% last year. Since
livestock contributes greatly to the agrarian economy and plays important role in poverty elevation of
the livelihood of large proportion of small and marginal scale farmers and landless laborers.
The targeted community copes using its own resources, therefore it is very important to give
awareness to farmers about how to protect their assets and improve their production. The targeted
communities selected by RSPN in collaboration with NRSP, TRDP and SRSO are living below poverty
line; they have good opportunity to get more profit and improve economically by rearing animals. In
this regard animals are the main asset of these people on which not only they depend in routine life
but in case any unfavourable situation befalls them they stabilize their economy with the help of
animals. Due to multidimensional importance of livestock, it is very important to convey basic
information regarding life hazards that affects animals and risks to health of animals to farmers on
grass root levels, who act as activists in their respective villages and UCs. List of selected union councils
for CLEWs training is as under.

Government of Sindh (GoS) through the Planning and
Development Department (PDD) is implementing a six-year
multi-sectoral Sindh Accelerated Action Plan for Reduction of
Stunting and Malnutrition (AAP), with the objective of reducing
stunting rate from the existing 48 percent to 40 percent by 2021.
The European Union (EU), under the EU Commission Action Plan
on Nutrition 2014, is supporting GoS in addressing the issue of
malnutrition. Therefore, EU Brussels Office has approved the
Programme for Improved Nutrition in Sindh (PINS) to be
implemented in ten districts of Sindh which include Shikarpur,
Thatta, Kambar Shahdadkot, Larkana, Dadu, Jamshoro, Matiari,
Sajawal, Tando Allahyar and Tando Muhammad Khan.
RSPN is leading the PINS Expected Results (ER) 3 component with
four partners: Action Against Hunger, National Rural Support
Programme (NRSP), Sindh Rural Support Organisation (SRSO) and
Thardeep Rural Development Programme (TRDP). This
component includes nutrition sensitive interventions i.e. Water
Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) and Agriculture &Food Security
(AFS).
