Lohengrin is a glorious romantic fairytale and Wagner’s most popular opera. Unlike traditional interpretations, which focus on the artist as misunderstood genius, the Erl production delves into the inner questions of Lohengrin and Elsa: childhood, the search within society, and the problems of growing up. Lohen-grin, like all children, experiences loneliness while growing up. And Lohengrin ends up in solitude just like his alter heroes Holländer and Tannhäuser. Gottfried as the bearer of hope must make good on a big promise.

For decades music scientist have been pondering the voyeur-istic question whether or not Mathilde Wesendonck really was Wagner’s mistress. We believe the answer lies in the compo-sition itself: only unfulfilled love can produce such wonder-ful music. Just as unfulfilled as the love of Tristan and Isolde, which, forced into a corset of conventions (and this becomes very clear in Erl’s production), is like a plea to abandon social customs and follow passion unconditionally. Or asked in an ex-aggerated way: Why shouldn’t Otto Wesendonck serve Mathilde and Richard breakfast in bed? Tristan and Isolde is a stroke of genius: with this composition Wagner not only turned upside down bourgeois moral conventions but also the conventions of Central European harmony and tonality.

For the opening of Suntory Hall in Tokyo in 1993, Gustav Kuhn developed the concept of the Hall Opera, a unique form that lies somewhere between a semi-staged and a fully-staged pro-duction. The performance of Puccini’s Tosca will be a complete scenic production but without elaborate props and technical support. As first Italian opera at the Passionsspielhaus, Tosca as hall opera is a perfect fit for Erl: reduced to the essential, the performance retains more of the elemental spirit of the work and allows for a greater appreciation of the musical values. As usual, Erl will present a truthful interpretation of the work instead yet another “traditional” yet meaningless version.

Following the huge success of last year’s production, it is not without pride that the Festival organizers bring back Tannhäu-ser in 2012. This decision also goes to show how flexible the Festival’s structures are that the organizers can spontaneously include a Wagner opera on the program. The composer once remarked that he still owes the world Tannhäuser. We still owe this performance to the audience who followed the salvation of the hero through the pure love of a woman – with the female always, and especially so in Erl, as bringer of salvation! – with great enthusiasm.

Some mistakenly believe that Wagner had become religious in his old age when he wrote Parsifal. Since in his works Wagner had addressed everything from his personal emotional con-flicts to theories of opera and political programs, the only thing that was still missing was the occult and metaphysical. And it wouldn’t be Richard Wagner if he hadn’t reached the conclusion that religion and its message need to be liberated from institu-tions and replaced by art. “Redemption for the Redeemer!" Art as the possibility of veridicality and explanation for the fundamen-tal nature of things, not as instrumentalized ritual. Which goes to show that Parsifal is in best hands at the Passionsspielhaus.

After a twelve-year break, the Tyrolean Festival Erl will once again open with Bruckner’s Symphony No. 5. The composition is exemplary for the postulation that art must never be an end to itself. Bruckner’s Symphony No. 5 is an enormous creation, a complex and challenging composition of unparalleled artistic density and a compelling inner logic. Yet it doesn’t feel crafted. Instead Bruckner managed to create music in its purest form. With his Fifth, Bruckner succeeded in further developing the symphony, which found its first climax in the Jupiter Symphony and rose towards its zenith with Beethoven’s Ninth. Bruckner’s composition will be preceded by a work commis-sioned by the 2012 Tyrolean Festival Erl. The composer Tristan Schulze, born 1964 in Saxony and now based in Vienna, wrote a piece for the Orchestra of the Tyrolean Festival Erl, the inter-nationally acclaimed Russian (alp)hornist Arkady Shilkloper and himself on the organ. In his work Mr. Schulze combines classi-cal music with alpine tunes to create a unique sound world.

In 2012, it will be the fourth time that Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 is part of the Festival’s opening program. It is this ongo-ing engagement with this symphony that ultimately reveals its essence to both the musicians and the audience. The more we are exposed to a language, the more we get used to it and come to understand it. Our endeavor to understand Beethoven is a challenging one but we again attempt to meet it.

CarL OrFFCarmina burana

Carmina Burana, a composition based on a long-lost collection of medieval songs, is the best-known work of the controversial German composer Carl Orff. First rejected as insult to good taste, then, strangely enough, glorified as “über-German", Carmina Burana – “Songs of Beuern" – developed into one of the most well-known pieces of operatic music. To this day there is no other composition that approaches Carmina Burana’s fame, as evidenced in pop culture's appropriation of the opening theme O Fortuna, which can be heard everywhere from music for tel-evision commercials to the entrance pomp at sporting events. Although Carl Orff and his Carmina Burana are still polar-izing, it is impossible to deny that the composition is a highly stirring work full of exciting rhythms and with a musical lan-guage that defies categorization.

To challenge traditional listening experiences – to clean the ears of the musically educated – has always been a matter of great importance to the Tyrolean Festival Erl. The Festival’s goal is to offer fresh visions and new perceptions of the familiar. In line with this philosophy, the season’s first Recital Evening will pre-sent two completely different approaches to one genre: the song. Schubert’s jovial tranquility meets Weill’s uncompromising dis-play of the abysm; euphony contrasts with pitiless expression. Where Schubert is only hinting at melancholy, Weill drags it to the fore. While both composers were aware of the downsides of life, the language used is a completely different one.

The “Stube” is a wood-paneled room where people meet to rest, celebrate, grieve and, often, to make music. Stubenmusik (lit. parlor music) refers to Bavarian and Austrian folk music ensem-bles using stringed instruments. With their folk music instru-ments, Quadrat:sch Stubenmusic takes the listener to a friendly and sophisticated version of this versatile place of encounter. Alexandra Dienz, Christof Dienz, Barbara Romen and Gunter Schneider will first present delightfully pleasing and disturb-ingly beautiful music before, through gentle turns and twists, exposing the audience to wholly new sounds. Quadrat:sch Stubenmusic gently unearths deep-seated roots, grafts them and lets them thrive. The ensemble does this in such a smart and passionate way that it is an honor and joy to pre-sent them at the Tyrolean Festival Erl.

Hindemith’s Sonata for Double Bass is one of the great high-lights of Erl’s Chamber Music Cycle. Lyrical and mellifluous moments are juxtaposed with rugged and angular passages. Hope and destruction are in stark contrast with each other: an image of Europe after World War II. The work is a classic mas-terpiece and extremely difficult for double bass. Double bass and trumpet are also found in Astor Piazzolla’s compositions. The Argentinean artist revolutionized the traditional tango into a new style termed Nuevo Tango, incorporating elements from jazz and classical music. Piazolla’s earlier works are influenced by Hindemith, Bartók and their contemporaries.

From 1970 to 1977 Kuhn worked as choirmaster and conduc-tor at the Istanbul Opera House, then as 1st Chapel Master at the Dortmund Opera House. During this time he already gave guest performances in Palermo, Naples and Bologna. Later he had engagements as guest director in Rome, Florence, Venice and Zurich. Gustav Kuhn also conducted the Berlin Philharmonics, the Dresden State Orchestra, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the London Sympho-ny Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala in Milano, the Orchestre National de France in Paris, the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, the NHK Orchestra in Tokyo, and, last but not least, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1974 Kuhn founded the In-stitute for Aleatoric Music in Salzburg; in 1977 he made his de-but at the Vienna State Opera with Richard Strauss’ Elektra; only a year later, in 1978, he debuted at the Bavarian State Opera and the Salzburg Festival; the following season Maestro Kuhn made his conducting debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in London and was engaged as General Music Director in Bern; in 1980 Kuhn opened the Glyndebourne Festival. More debuts followed: 1981 with Fidelio in Chicago; 1982 with Così fan tutte at the Paris Opera; 1984 at with Tannhäuser Milan’s Scala; 1986 with Un ballo in maschera at Arena di Verona. In 1986 Gustav Kuhn started to direct and produce operas to achieve a greater artistic union between a work’s visual and musical components. Kuhn produced and staged The Flying Dutchman (Triest), Parsifal (Naples), Salome (Rome), Don Car-los (Turin), Don Giovanni (Festival di Macerata), Rossini’s Otello (Berlin, Braunschweig and Tokyo), La Bohème (Tokyo), Ariadne on Naxos (Milan), Falstaff (Tokyo), among others.

In 1986 Gustav Kuhn made his debut as opera director with the Flying Dutchman in Trieste (stage design and costumes: Peter Pabst); in 1993 he developed the “Hall Opera” series for Suntory Hall Opera in Tokyo; Kuhn stayed with the Salzburg Festival until 1997 (1989 Un ballo in maschera; 1992, 1994 and 1997 La clemenza di Tito). From 1983 to 1985 Kuhn served as general music director at the Bonn Opera, followed by engagements as head conductor of the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome and later as artistic director of the Teatro di San Carlo in Neapel. From 1990 to 1994 Kuhn headed the music festival in Macerata. Gustav Kuhn has been artistic director of Neue Stimmen (New Voices), an international singing competition by the Ger-man Bertelsmann Foundation in Gütersloh, since 1987. In 1992 Kuhn founded the Accademia di Montegral, headquartered at the Convento dell’Angelo in Lucca (Tuscany) since 2000. In 1997 Kuhn founded the Tyrolean Festival Erl. After working on Wagner’s Ring for several years, Kuhn took the production on tour for the first time in 2005 (Santander) and produced the now legendary 24-hour Ring. The same year Dr. Hans Peter Ha-selsteiner agreed to become president of the Tyrolean Festival Erl; the construction of the Festspielhaus is largely owed to his efforts and commitment. By the end of summer 2012 Gustav Kuhn will have directed and conducted all of Wagner’s grand operas at Erl’s Passionsspielhaus. The opening of the Festspiel-haus is scheduled for December 2012. Gustav Kuhn has been artistic director of the Haydn Orches-tra of Bolzano and Trento since January 2003. In 2010 Kuhn instituted the South Tyrol Festival (Toblach/Dobbiaco) at the urging of Governor Dr. Luis Durnwalder. Gustav Kuhn’s compositions include orchestra works, masses and solo pieces; his instrumentation of Janácek’s Diary of One Who Disappeared met with great acclaim at the Opéra National de Paris (released at Edition Peters). Kuhn has been perform-ing the Delirium concert series in his hometown of Salzburg annually since 2007. Gustav Kuhn’s recording are available at col legno, BMG, EMI, CBS, Capriccio, Supraphon, Orfeo, Koch / Schwann, Coreolan, ARTE NOVA and others. Orchestra of the tyrolean Festival erl

Founded in the summer of 1999, the Orchestra generated en-thusiastic audiences and critical acclaim in its first year at the Tyrolean Festival Erl. The Orchestra is an amalgamation of the finest talents, experienced musicians from renowned interna-tional orchestras, chamber music specialists and teachers who share a passion for classical works and a dedication to musi-cal perfection. Every June and July the musicians meet up at the Tyrolean Festival Erl to perform the magnificent works of Wagner and Strauss as well as romantic and classical concert pieces. With Gustav Kuhn as spiritus rector and musical director, the orches-tra enjoys international critical and artistic praise for its per-formances and established a reputation as the world’s leading Wagner orchestra. The orchestra’s repertoire includes Beethoven’s symphonies and all great works of the romantic composers including Bruck-ner, Tchaikovsky and Mahler; Richard Strauss’ operas Elektra and Guntram; Wagner’s The Ring of the Nibelungs, Tristan and Isolde, Parsifal, The Mastersingers of Nuremberg, The Flying Dutchman and Tannhäuser; and Mozart’s The Magic Flute.

Founded in 2007, the Choir Academy is on par with the Festival Orchestra. The Choir Academy, too, offers its members a ho-listic development as artists, and focuses on strengthening the individual voice within the choral setting. Thanks to its excel-lent training, the Choir Academy has reached the highest level of artistic excellence necessary to perform a variety of choral works, including everything from a cappella music to operas. Artistic director of the young ensemble is Gustav Kuhn. The Choir Academy has a base of 32 members but can vary in size depending on the repertoire being performed, which ranges from cappella music to great concert and opera productions. The Choir Academy of the Tyrolean Festival Erl places great emphasis on the quality and training of the individual voice. Singers receive significant individual attention, making it pos-sible for singers to expand their musical and vocal potential. The Choir Academy’s concert repertoire includes Verdi’s Mes-sa da Requiem, Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis, Mahler’s Sympho-ny No. 8, Joseph Haydn’s Nelson Mass, and Gioacchino Ross-ini’s Petite Messe Solennelle. Under Marco Medved, the Choir Academy performed in opera productions of The Mastersingers of Nuremberg, Fidelio, Electra, The Magic Flute and The Flying Dutchman, Tannhäuser, Parsifal, Lohengrin and Tosca as well as in a cappella concerts.

Erl has been buzzing with construction since October 2011. The Orchestra and Choir Academy, the singers, the assistants to the director, the lighting designer, the stage designer and the cos-tume designer, the directors, the administrative staff and the technicians of the Tyrolean Festival Erl – they all will find a new home in the modern Festspielhaus. Designed by Delugan Meissl Associated Architects, Vienna, the extraordinary struc-ture will boast 862 seats (130 of which are flexible seats near the orchestra) and the world’s largest orchestra pit (160-sq meters). The total useable surface will be 7,000-square meter. The new Festspielhaus will respect and compliment the archi-tecture of the old Passionsspielhaus and its natural surroundings in a unique way: in the summer, when the Tyrolean Festival Erl or the Passion Plays take place at the white Passionsspielhaus, the dark Festspielhaus will blend with the dark forest, thus al-lowing the Passionsspielhaus to be dominant. In the winter it is the other way round: while the white Passionsspielhaus will fade into its surroundings, the dark Festspielhaus will stand out against the white landscape. In the summer the Festspielhaus will serve as additional venue for the Tyrolean Festival Erl; during Passion Play years and in the winter it will be the Festival’s only venue. In October 2010, general contractor STRABAG started the pre-paratory work for the Festspielhaus, which included the blasting

a new Festival house for erl

Page 41: Tyrolean Festival Erl Summer 2012

of 110,000 tons of rock. Of special concern was the preservation of the Blaue Quelle, a pristine natural spring. Experts were called in to ascertain the safety of the landmark and avoid potential damage to it. All assessments were completed and approved be-fore construction started and neither the origin nor the course of the bubbling spring will be disturbed in any way. The Festspielhaus’ structural work was completed in Septem-ber 2011. The massive steel construction is scheduled to be com-pleted by Christmas, interior construction has already started. So far, the construction has been on schedule and the Festspiel-haus is set to open on 26 December 2012. The construction of the Festspielhaus and all necessary infrastructure (garages etc.) was made possible largely by the Haselsteiner Family Private Foundation who covers the lion share of the estimated 36 mil-lion Euros in construction cost. The foundation will also pay all working expenses as well as the cost arising from programming in the winter. In October 2011, the Tyrolean Festival Erl received eight million Euros in funding from the Tyrolean State Govern-ment to help finance the project; the Federal Government also said they would offer eight million Euros, but a firm promise of financial help is still outstanding. The new house’s repertoire will focus on Bach, Händel, Haydn, Mozart, bel-canto and other music of the Italian rep-ertoire, for which the stage at the Passionspielhaus is not – or only inadequately – suitable. During non-performance times the house will serve as training center for all opera-related pro-fessions. The Festspielhaus in Erl will be officially inaugurated at the first Winter Festival starting on 26 December 2012. The Winter Festiva, which is scheduled to run yearly from St. Ste-phen’s Day (26 Dec) through Three Kings Day (6 Jan), will offer operas and classical music at a time when many opera houses in Europe are closed.

Erl (pop. 1,450) is located in the North-Tyrolean Unterinntal Valley, on the border with Bavaria and about 15 kilometers from Kufstein. Tyrol’s northernmost and lowest town once was a Roman estate known as Praedium Aurelianum. A Mithra stone with the inscription “DIM PRO SALUTE” was found during ex-cavations at the parish and shows that Romans settled here as early as 300 AD. The first time Erl was mentioned in an official document, the Notitia Arnonis, a list of the possessions of Salz-burg’s archbishopric, is 788 AD. Erl and Erl’s parish, which is dedicated to Saint Andreas the Apostle, were destroyed several times during the course of history. Under Emperor Maximilian Erl, together with Rattenberg, Kitzbühel and Kufstein, was fi-nally ceded to Tyrol in 1504. Erl is one of the Inntal Valley’s oldest villages. Erl’s main attractions include the “Blaue Quelle” (Blue Spring) which has an average flow rate of 700 liters per sec-ond, Trockenbach waterfall, the legendary “Erler Herz”, a heart-shaped mountain pass, and the Calvary overlooking the Inntal valley. Great and easily accessible vista mountains are Kranz- horn (1367 m) with its two summit crosses, and Spitzstein (1596 m). The former Gasthof Zollhaus Inn at the wooden Inn bridge boasts a memorial plaque for Adolf Pichler, the famous geologist and local historian who was born here in 1819.

The tradition of performing religious plays can be traced back to 1613 when pilgrims on their way from Munich to Altöt-ting stopped by in Erl to see an Easter play. The oldest text was written by the Augsburg mastersinger Sebastian Wild and dates from the 16th century. Built between 1957 and 1959 on plans by Robert Schuller, a student of Clemens Holzmeister, the Passionsspielhaus has a tiered stage and is Austria’s largest orchestra theater. The Erl Passion Play, which is acted by six hundred local villagers, has been staged every six years since the theater’s completion. To this day some 800,000 visitors have come to see the unique performances in Erl. The music, which has changed several times in the course of the Play’s history and included everything from religious chants to the wonderful compositions of Cesar Bresgen and Wolfram Wagner, is always performed by local musicians. In 2013 Erl will celebrate the 400th anniversary of its Pas-sion Play. For this occasion the famous Tyrol-born writer Felix Mitterer was commissioned to write a new text. Director will be Markus Plattner from Schwaz, stage design will be by Annelie Büchner, costume design by Lenka Radecky.

In today’s competitive free market young professionals like singers, conductors, répétiteurs, stage designers and costume designers often find themselves left out in the cold and there-fore ultimately doomed to fail. What once was the responsibility of theater and music directors, namely the support and profes-sional education of young artists, today is often subject to their arbitrariness and the dictate of the entertainment industry. In addition, the opera is in the throes of an economic and struc-tural crisis: high operating costs, expensive technology, grand trappings, a sluggish – and sometimes hostile – bureaucracy, and incompetent opera makers add to the already challenging situation. As a result there are many are poorly trained and easy-to-replace young musicians, and, ultimately, a decreas-ing interest in opera, especially among younger people. The Accademia di Montegral sees its purpose in providing support and education as well as promoting the art form of the opera.

The groundwork was laid in 1987 when conductor and direc-tor Gustav Kuhn founded the Accademia in Italy. Later, sister

institutions were set up in Germany (1993) and in Japan (1994; Tokyo Suntory-Hall).The “Convento dell’Angelo” near Lucca (Tuscany) has been the artistic center of the Accademia di Montegral since October 2000. The way the Accademia works is that certain topics are chosen which are then discussed and debated by students and renowned experts (e.g. elocutionists, répétiteurs, conductors, directors, etc.) during class. The Accademia also provides prac-tice-oriented information on a variety of topics such as cast-ing, fees, etc.

The Accademia offers its high-level support not only to tal-ented young singers but also to artists from related fields such as instrumentalists, conductors, composers and directors. This way it is possible for the Accademia di Montegral to produce and perform complete opera productions itself. Some of the Accademia di Montegral’s esteemed honorary members include Francisco Araiza, Albert Dohmen, Gertrud Ottenthal, Peter Pabst and Renato Bruson.

Funding and support for the Accademia’s programs comes large-ly from sponsors and private benefactors.

The Accademia di Montegral is located inside the Convento dell’Angelo, a monastery of the Passionists, a Roman Catholic religious order. After hundreds of years at the Convento, which is beautifully set high above Lucca, a shortage of new priests and the dilapidated condition of the monastery forced the Pas-sionists to leave the Convento in the 1990ies and look for a new use of the building. In 2000 Gustav Kuhn’s Accademia di Montegral found its home in the Convento. The Passionists, who live their faith through commitment to those who suffer, are dedicated to social work and fighting pov-erty worldwide. The Passionists of Brazil have several projects running in Salvador, Itabuna and Jequie to offer street children a better future and an alternative to life on the streets. The Accademia di Montegral supports the work of the Pas-sionist Order in Brazil. Any assistance as well as donations are greatly appreciated.
