WELCOME FROM THE DIRECTOR

“ I am pleased to report a continued upward trajectory in the percentage of students gaining employment upon graduation, standing at 78% for the class of 2018”

Welcome from the Director03

Back in 2011 I reported that 56.9% of UCD graduates

for whom destinations were known had progressed

into employment. I am pleased to report a continued

upward trajectory in the percentage of students

gaining employment upon graduation, standing at

78% for the class of 2018. It is perhaps significant that

this growth occurs not only in a strong job market but

at a time when student engagement with UCD Careers

Network is at an all time high. The 2018/19 academic

year has been our busiest since 2010 with increased

student engagement evident across most areas. The

introduction of the UCD Career Development and

Employability Strategy 2015-2020 in October 2018

was a welcome addition to the strategic landscape at

UCD and we look forward to its implementation across

the University.

Introducing UCD Careers Network

Towards the end of the 2017/18 academic session,

the staff of the UCD Career Development Centre and

the UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School’s

Career and Skills Centre came together for a time

of reflection around messaging, brand and identity.

Through a tendering process, IE Brand (a brand agency

for charities, health and education) and IE Digital were

appointed to work with the team.

Our aim is to enhance the Centre’s core messaging

and communications through a new visual identity

and website. Through consultations and workshops,

the UCD Career Development Centre arrived at

a new name and has re-branded as UCD Careers

Network. Encompassing the former Centres at

Belfield and Blackrock, the name is indicative of the

close relationship between the former Centres. It also

reflects the diversity of clients served such as students,

Postdoctoral Researchers, Faculty, University staff,

professional associations, recruiters of graduates

and other organisations. By harnessing the available

expertise across functions and campuses UCD Careers

Network has a significant impact on the student

experience.

At UCD Careers Network, the team is looking forward

to further developments and partnerships across our

client groups.

Members of staff at UCD Careers Network see enhancing personal attributes and constructs such as self-efficacy, self-confidence and self-esteem as core to the success of work undertaken.

We believe that students in possession of higher

levels of self-confidence, self-efficacy and

self-esteem are more likely to actively engage in

the student experience through involvement in

clubs, societies and sports, to volunteer, to adopt

active and independent learning strategies,

to be confident in career and life decision

making and to develop skills and attributes

employers seek and which future leaders need.

Network, by appointing a dedicated Careers

Professional, was unique in Ireland in establishing

a coherent service to support the mobility of UCD

Graduate Researchers to national and international

opportunities beyond the PhD.

From the outset the service formed key internal and

external working relationships with UCD Research

Institutes, UCD Schools, UCD Colleges, UCD Graduate

Studies Office, UCD Graduate Schools, UCD Research,

Innovation and Impact, UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate

Business School, Employers and Professional Bodies.

This sector leading service has been successful in

reaching the graduate researcher cohort, in the main,

doctoral candidates. Feedback has been positive from

staff and students, including:

Student feedback: “I’d like to say a huge thanks to you

for your interview prep two weeks ago. I landed the job

and your coaching played a huge part in that. I forgot

to mention that it was a great PhD connect workshop

last month. I enjoyed your session and tasks!”

“… wonderful to speak with… made me feel comfortable

and gave me a space to express my thoughts and

concerns about my future options. She has a very

dynamic and personable approach - I appreciated how

she thought outside the box, rather than advising the

most logical career pathway that others have advised

me. She also gave me advice on how to manage the

final months of PhD process and job hunting. Highly

recommend this service to other students.”

CAREER DEVELOPMENT FOR EARLY STAGE RESEARCHERS

“Introduce a Career Development process for PhD students and continue to enhance the Researcher Careers Framework for Post-doctoral fellows to ensure provision of career development support and the provision of transferable skills modules.” (UCD Career Development and Employability

Strategy 2015-2025)

Graduate Research Students

Underpinning the individual PhD experience at UCD lies

a well-established infrastructure of Professional and

Career Development supports. In 2018 the UCD Careers

The programme remains popular with and critical to

the career and professional progression of around

350 Postdoctoral researchers at UCD. Feedback from

Postdoctoral Researchers about the services on offer

include:

“Overall I feel immensely positive about all programmes

and support offered by UCD Research Careers for

Postdocs. These meetings were very useful to me for

a variety of things, ranging from professional advice,

being aware of opportunities and networking with

others! Thank you so much!”

“The programme is excellent! It has helped me so much

and I am very grateful that it is there. Thank you.”

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHERS(PD1/PD2 CONTRACTED RESEARCHERS)

“We will work to ensure that all members of faculty and staff are enabled to achieve their full potential and are appropriately rewarded for their contribution tour mission, vision and community.”

UCD has the sector-leading Career & Professional

Development Programme for Postdoctoral Researchers.

In recent years, the success and impact of the programme

has been highlighted in the UCD Culture and Engagement

Survey and in a Periodic Quality Review of the then
