THE GAME

UCONN VS. EAST CAROLINA HISTORYThursday’s game is the first-ever meeting between UConn and East Carolina, a first-year member of the American Athletic Conference. The Huskies are playing five first-time opponents this season as they opened with three-straight – BYU, Stony Brook and Boise State. UConn played Tulane on Oct. 11 and now face East Carolina.

UCONN-EAST CAROLINA CONNECTIONSThere is one North Carolina native on the UConn team – redshirt sophomore punter Justin Wain is from Wilmington…there are no Connecticut natives on the East Carolina team…Skip Holtz, the current head coach at Louisiana Tech, was the head coach at both UConn (1994-98) and East Carolina (2005-09).

RENTSCHLER GAMEDAY/FAN ACTIVITIESThere are a number of new fan experiences for UConn football games this season:• There will be Friday night pep rallies for selected games on the Storrs cam-pus during the 2014 season. The remaining pep rallies are Oct. 31 for UCF and Dec. 5 for SMU and Senior Day. The rallies feature the UConn football team, marching band and cheerleaders. The rallies will take place starting at 6:30 p.m. on the Storrs campus and this week’s will take place in back of the Student Union. The team and head coach Bob Diaco walk from The Burton Family Foot-ball Complex to the pep rally location and arrive there at approximately 7:00 p.m. The team will then walk to the Nathan Hale Inn, where the team will now be staying on nights before home games.• There is a new route for the Husky Walk as the team arrives for games at Rentschler Field this year and fans get a chance to greet the team as they get off their buses and make their way to the stadium. The Husky walk, which takes place approximately, two hours and 15 minutes before kickoff, now starts in the Gray Parking Lots and the team will makes its way to the large tunnel near Gate B.• The UConn team now does its pregame warmup in front of the UConn student section on the South End of the stadium – a change from previous seasons. The Huskies will enter the stadium for pregame warmups on the con-course of Rentschler Field and go through the student section.• The break between the third and fourth quarter features “Coach D’s Playl-ist” as fans during the game will get to guess which song will be played from a collection of Diaco’s favorites based on a list shown earlier in the game. The choice for the BYU game was “This Is How We Roll (Remix)” by Florida Georgia Line and Jason Derulo while the selection for Stony Brook was “One” by Metal-lica and Boise State was “Cupid Shuffle” by Cupid. Temple was “Turn Down For

What” by White Snake.• The team and staff sings the “UConn Husky” fight song in front of the stu-dent section along with the UConn Marching Band following each game.• Once again, FanFest takes place starting four hours before kickoff up until 30 minutes before the game between Gates A and B outside the stadium gates. The offerings change each game, but activities typically include inflat-able games for children, live bands, promotional vehicles and UConn student-athletes from various teams signing autographs.

touchdowns. His finest performance came on a record-setting day against Memphis at Rentschler Field on Dec. 6. In a 45-10 win, Davis recorded 15 receptions for 207 yards and a touch-down. The 15 catches are a single-game program record, and the 207 yards rank fifth-most in a game in UConn history. The 6-3 receiver was named to Biletnikoff Award Watch List in July.

Diaco on Davis: “Geremy Davis is big and strong and has an incredible catch radius. He gets open with body control and body position. He’s an explosive player and he’s a big player. Off the field, he’s kind and a person with incredibly high char-acter and a very good man. He’s a college graduate and an incredible ambassador for the University.”

Jones is a four-year starter in the secondary, starting all 12 games at cornerback last year after starting at safety in 2011 and 2012. Last year, he led the Huskies with three interceptions and finished tied for third on the squad with 60 total tackles. Jones has played in all 41 games of the last three-plus seasons and has 220 career tackles, 17 pass break-ups and seven interceptions.

Diaco on Jones: “Byron Jones is intangibly a gifted player. He possesses the speed both short and long. He has both vertical explosiveness and vertical quickness of an elite small-bodied corner, but he’s really big. So he moves like a little guy, but he’s six-foot. He’s a B-plus student in one of the more hard and chal-lenging curriculums that we have at this top 20 public university in the country. He’s a great community guy and great person. He’s so charismatic and commutative and pensive. I’ve joked I could see him be the governor of the state. He’s that special.”

UConn’s most experienced returner on the offensive line, Mateas started all 12 games at center in 2013 and has played in 26 overall games over the last two-plus seasons. He was named to the Rimington Award Spring Watch List in May.

Diaco on Mateas: “Alex Mateas has built himself into a player. He’s worked on his body. He’s always been athletic, with his soccer background. He was a competitive soccer play as a youngster. We see him as one of our ‘key’ starters. I know I have used that term a little bit. He’s another guy that is very helpful and a demonstrative communicator. He doesn’t mind snatching a guy up and he leads from the front so he’s got his teammates respect.”

Vann has played in 27 games over the last three-plus seasons, and made three starts at linebacker last season before start-ing the first six in 2014. Vann made a splash playing in his hometown last year when he returned a fumble 40 yards for a touchdown in an Oct. 19 contest at Cincinnati.

Diaco on Vann: “As a younger guy, but so mature, he’s got a different kind of way about him from the others. He’s not necessarily a rah-rah cheerleader type of guy, but he is vocal and demonstrative. He’s a really good person and very kind, but he also can flip the switch on the field. He can live in the two worlds pretty well. It’s a prerequisite and critical as an inside linebacker. He can be an enforcer and conduct his business that way. He’s not afraid to impose his will on players that need help.”

HEY, THIS PLACE LOOKS FAMILIARDespite UConn having virtually an entire new staff this year, seven of the Huskies’ full-time coaches had previously worked games at Rentschler Field before this season. Head coach Bob Diaco, defensive coordinator Anthony Poindexter and assistant coach Wayne Lineburg were on the Virginia staff for a 45-10 Husky win on Sept. 13, 2008; Assistant head coach Don Patterson was on the Buffalo staff for a 24-17 UConn win on Sept. 29, 2012; Offensive coordinator Mike Cummings was on the Western Michigan staff for a 41-27 UConn win on Nov. 1, 2003; Defensive line coach Kevin Wolthausen was on the Lou-isville staff for a 30-20 UConn loss on Dec. 3, 2005. Wolthausen was also on the staff of the Las Vegas Locomotives when it played the Hartford Colonials in the United Football League on Nov. 20, 2010. UConn offensive line coach Mike Foley is the lone holdover on the staff and is in his ninth season.

HUSKIES AND NATIONAL POLLSUConn has been ranked in the Associated Press poll for six weeks during its FBS history, four weeks in the USA Today poll and seven weeks in the BCS rankings. UConn was No. 25 on Dec. 5, 2010, in its only ranking of that year. The Huskies were No. 16 on Oct. 28, 2007 and Nov. 4, 2007, No. 25 on Nov. 11, 2007, No. 20 on Nov. 18, 2007 and No. 24 on Sept. 28, 2008.

UCONN VS. RANKED TEAMS Thursday’s game vs. East Carolina will be the 24th time in school history that the Huskies have faced a team ranked in the Associated Press poll at the time of the contest and UConn has two victories in those games. The wins are vs. No. 19 Louisville on November 24, 2012 by a 23-20 score in triple overtime and on Oct. 27, 2007 with a 22-15 win over No. 11 USF. UConn first played a ranked team in the 2001 season opener at No. 9 Virginia Tech. UConn has played the country’s top ranked team once when it traveled to Miami on Oct. 5, 2002.

HUSKIES VS. NON-CONFERENCE FOES SINCE 2002Connecticut boasts a 46-27 record against non-conference opponents in the regular season since making the move to the FBS in 2002. The Huskies have won 21 of their last 34 regu-lar season non-league games overall. UConn has posted the following records in non-conference regular season games: 6-6 (2002), 9-3 (2003), 4-1 (2004), 3-1 (2005), 3-2 (2006), 4-1 (2007), 4-1 (2008), 4-1 (2009), 3-2 (2010), 2-3 (2011), 3-2 (2012) and 0-4 (2013), 1-2 (2014).

OFFENSE NOTES

WHITMER AT STARTING QB Diaco announced on Monday, August 18 that redshirt sopho-more Casey Cochran (Monroe, Conn.) would be the starting quarterback for the Husky football team as the 2014 season begins. Redshirt senior Chandler Whitmer (Newnan, Ga.) was to serve as the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart.

Cochran did start the opener vs. BYU and was 17 of 31 in the air for 171 yards and an interception. Whitmer was eight of 17 for 113 yards. Cochran has permanently discontinued playing football due to sustaining multiple concussions during his careerWhitmer has now started the past four games for the Huskies while sophomore Tim Boyle (Middlefield, Conn.) is second on the depth chart.

Whitmer started the win over Stony Brook and was 12 of 27 in the air for 142 yards and a touchdown. He was also the Huskies leading rusher with 29 yards on 13 carries. As the starter vs. Boise, Whitmer was 16 of 29 for 209 yards with two TD passes and two interceptions. Whitmer was the only QB to play at USF and was 6-of-10 in the air for 88 yards and a touchdown.

Whitmer was 12 of 23 in the air vs. Temple with an interception and a TD while Boyle was one of four for seven yards. Boyle saw his first action of the season vs. Boise State and was six for nine in the air for 33 yards.

Whitmer has now started 21 career games at UConn, with all 12 games in 2012, four in 2013 and five this season. He has thrown for 4,275 career yards as a Husky and 19 touchdowns.

In addition to Whitmer and Boyle, Diaco also used senior wide receiver De-shon Foxx (Lynchburg, Va.) in the Temple game out of Wildcat formation in the fourth quarter. Foxx completed his only pass attempt on the day for four yards and also carried the ball three times for 30 yards, including a 26-yard rush.

Cochran played in eight games 2013, starting the final four and posting a 3-1 record. He finished the year 111-for-175 in the air with 1,293 yards and 11 touchdowns against four interceptions, adding a rushing touchdown as well. He set the UConn single-game record for passing yards with 461 against Memphis (Dec. 7). Cochran was 36-of-54 with four touchdowns in that game, finishing with the second-most completions and third-most attempts in a game in UConn history.

THREE FOR 300Whitmer, Boyle and Cochran each started games last year and all three of them have had a game of 300 or more passing yards. Cochran set the school single-game record for passing yards with 461 against Memphis in the season finale and also had 311 vs. Rutgers, which is 32nd. Whitmer started the first four games of the season and passed for 349 yards vs. Maryland, which is the 12th highest in school single-game history. Whitmer also passed for 333 yards against Western Michigan in 2012 – which is 20th in school history.

Boyle passed for 310 yards in his first collegiate start vs. USF last season, which is 33rd.

UConn never had a season with three 300-yard QBs and three seasons with two 300-yard QBs – 1990 (Cornelius Benton and Matt DeGennaro), 1991 (Benton and Tom DeSarno) and 1998 (Brian Hoffmann and Shane Stafford).

WHITMER IN UCONN RECORD BOOKSWhitmer’s name started to appear in the UConn record books early in the 2013 season. Here’s a summary: seventh in career total offense with 4,067 yards; eighth in career plays with 760; fourth in career pass completions with 350; seventh in career passing attempts with 619; fifth in career passing yards with 4,416; and fifth in career yards per attempt with 7.13. His 361 pass attempts in 2012 were sixth in single-season history and his 208 completions were seventh while his 2,664 passing yards were fifth.

DAVIS CLIMBING THE LADDER TOOUConn senior wide receiver Geremy Davis has 33 receptions for 431 yards this season with seven receptions for 96 yards vs. BYU and six receptions for 113 yards against Stony Brook. He had three receptions for 47 yards against Boise State with a 10-yard TD reception. Davis and Whitmer hooked up for a 32-yard TD pass late in the fourth quarter of the USF game. Davis led UConn in receiving vs. Temple with eight receptions for 80 yards and also led the team vs. Tulane with eight receptions for 63 yards.

Davis has made a reception in 32-straight games, dating back to the 2011 season, the 10th-longest such streak in the country. He is seventh in career receptions with 146 while Brian Kozlows-ki is sixth with 159 from 1989-92. Davis is seventh in career re-ceiving yards with 2,139 while David Dunn (1985-97) is sixth with 2,285. Davis’ 71 receptions last year were fifth in single-season history while his 1,085 yards were sixth.

BIG-PLAY ARKEELFreshman Arkeel Newsome (Ansonia, Conn.) sparked the longest play from scrimmage this year for UConn against Temple on Sept. 27 when he caught a screen pass and took it 74 yards for a touchdown. It was the first career score for Newsome and UConn’s longest play since a Whitmer to Shakim Phillips 75-yard touchdown pass on Sept. 14, 2013 vs. Maryland.

DEFENSE NOTES

JONES MAKES RETURN HISTORYSenior cornerback Byron Jones (New Britain, Conn.) had a 70-yard interception return for a TD late in the first half of Friday night’s game vs. USF. Jones also has a career fumble return for a touchdown and became just the third Husky player to have a fumble return for a TD and an interception TD in a career. Jones fumble return for a TD also came against USF – in a 16-10 UConn win in 2011.

The other Huskies to achieve this feat were Yawin Smallwood (2011-13) and Anthony Carter (1996-99).

TACKLING MACHINESEach of UConn’s three starting linebackers for the BYU game recorded 11 tackles, which was a new career-high for every one of them. Redshirt junior Graham Stewart (Durham, Conn.) also added a tackle for loss and topped his previous personal best of eight stops, which came in the season opener last year against Towson. Jefferson Ashiru (Powder Springs, Ga.) factored into UConn’s lone sack in the BYU game and bested his previous career-high of 10 tackles in last year’s USF game. Marquise Vann (Cincinnati, Ohio) posted his 11 tackles after never previ-ously notching more than five in a game in his career.

Vann had a huge game at USF on Sept. 19, upping his career-high by recording 14 tackles, including nine solo stops. He also added 2.5 tackles for loss and leads the Huskies with 56 tackles in 2014. Vann has led the Huskies or tied for the team-high in tackles in four contests this year, while Stewart had the most at Tulane on Oct. 11 and leads UConn with 4.5 tackles for loss.

SEASONED SECONDARYAll four of UConn’s starters in the secondary have started all five games this year and bring plenty of experience back to the unit. Jones leads the way at one of the cornerback spots, starting all 12 games a year ago and having played in all 42 contests during his UConn career. The other cornerback is redshirt sophomore Jha-von Williams (Delray Beach, Fla.), who made five starts in his 10 appearances last season. At one safety spot, redshirt sophomore Obi Melifonwu (South Grafton, Mass.) started all 12 games in 2013 and earned national recognition, as he was named a Fresh-man All-America Honorable Mention by Scout.com. Melifonwu finished second on the squad with 70 tackles and added two in-terceptions and two forced fumbles. He led UConn with 10 tackles against Boise State. Redshirt junior Andrew Adams (Fayetteville, Ga.) takes the other safety spot and has played in 23 games over

the last two-plus years – including both this year. Adams is third on UConn this season with 42 tackles. THE BIG FELLAS UP FRONTRedshirt junior Julian Campenni (West Pittston, Pa.) and redshirt freshman Mikal Myers (Newburgh, N.Y.) are splitting time at nose guard this season, and had a dominant performance against the Stony Brook front on Sept. 6. Campenni tied a career-high with six tackles, making 1.5 stops behind the line of scrimmage. Myers set a new career-high with four tackles, including 2.0 tackles for loss and his first career sack. Myers had another big performance at Tulane on Oct. 11, notching two more tackles for loss. Fellow inte-rior lineman B.J. McBryde (Beaver Falls, Pa.) had a career-high six tackles at USF on Sept. 19, including his first career tackle for loss. Defensive end Kenton Adeyemi (Wethersfield, Conn.) recorded his first career sack on Sept. 27 vs. Temple.

SPECIAL TEAMS NOTES

NEW FACES IN KICK GAMEUConn has a pair of new faces in both the kicking and punting department this season with the graduation of PK Chad Christen and P Cole Wagner. Wagner is second in UConn career punting average with 40.7 yards.

Redshirt sophomore Bobby Puyol (North Palm Beach, Fla.) is now the starting kicker this season after redshirting in 2013. He has converted six of seven field goals in his career, knocking down five straight to start this season with a long of 42 against Stony Brook. He has converted five of six extra point attempts. He also took over punting duties against Temple on Sept. 27, booting six times with a long of 41 yards and two punts downed inside the 20.

Redshirt sophomore Justin Wain (Wilmington, N.C.) is now the primary punter and the BYU contest was his first game action. Wain has 32 punts this season for an average of 41.0 yards per boot. Ten of his 32 punts have been inside the opponents 20-yard line – including six of his nine vs. Stony Brook on Sept. 6. Wain has also seen nearly half (15) of his punts go for fair catches and has launched five at least 50 yards. He was named the ECAC Rookie of the Week for his performance vs. SBU and had a season-long 56-yard boot at USF on Sept. 19.

Both Wain and Puyol were members of the 2013 American Ath-letic Conference All-Academic Team. Freshman Chase Briley (Hartford, Conn.), who played at Capital Prep High School, will be the backup at both kicker and punter.

THE RETURN GAMESenior Deshon Foxx (Lynchburg, Va.) provided a spark for the Huskies on Saturday, Sept. 6 when he returned a third-quarter punt 72-yards for a touchdown to give UConn a 19-10 lead with 9:22 left in the period against Stony Brook. This is Foxx’s first season returning punts and now has five returns for 82 yards. He is second in the American Athletic Conference at 16.4 yards per punt return and is 14th nationally. Foxx was named the American Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week after the Stony Brook game and the ECAC Co-Special Teams Player of the Week.

Foxx’s punt return for a TD was the first for UConn since Nick Wil-liams had an 80-yarder vs. Pittsburgh on Nov. 9, 2012 at Rent-schler Field.

His only return at Tulane on Oct. 11 was his longest of the season, a 47-yard burst to mark the best UConn kick return this year.

STADIUM/ATTENDANCE NOTES

RENTSCHLER FIELDThe Huskies moved into Rentschler Field in East Hartford for the 2003 season and UConn entered its 12th season of play there on Friday. Located within miles of Interstates 91, 84 and 384, the home of the Huskies lies on 75 acres of land donated to the State of Connecticut from the historic Pratt & Whitney Airfield. The stadium, like the former airfield, is named for that company’s founder, Frederick Rentschler. The stadium boasts a capacity of 40,000 with 38 luxury suites.

UConn has an all-time record of 49-27 at Rentschler Field and a 27-13 mark in non-conference games. UConn has played to 91.1-pct. of capacity all-time there, drawing 2,770,125 fans, or an average of 36,449 per game.

UConn set a new all-time single-game attendance record at Rentschler Field on Sept. 21 against Michigan with a crowd of 42,704. That capacity was achieved with extra bleachers brought in for that game.

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. - BYU junior quarterback Taysom Hill threw for three touchdown passes and ran for another two as the Cougars defeated the University of Connecticut football team in the 2014 opener for both teams. The game was played before a crowd of 35,150 at Rentschler Field and was the debut for new UConn head coach Bob Diaco.Hill completed 28 of 36 passes to nine receivers without an interception. He went 17 of 20 to lead the Cougars to a 28-7 halftime advantage, and was BYU’s leading rusher with 97 yards on 12 carries.“He was resilient and methodical and 28 points in the first half was ideal and that was something I was hoping to see,” BYU coach Bronco Men-denhall said. The Cougars put up 513 yards of offense, 329 of that before intermission.Husky sophomore Casey Cochran (Monroe, Conn.) and senior Chandler Whitmer (Newnan, Ga.) split quarterback duties and threw for a combined 284 yards. Cochran was 17 of 31 for 171 yards. He also threw an intercep-tion on the Huskies’ second drive deep in BYU territory. Whitmer was eight of 17 for 113 yards.“That’s the point you’re at right now,” Diaco said, who played 50 players combined on offense and defense. “For the players to get better, they have to play in games.”BYU got off to a quick start as Hill, who last year ran for more than 1,300 yards and passed for just under 3,000, capped the Cougars’ opening 15-play, 75-yard drive with a seven-yard run. He then found Mitch Mathews wide open over the middle from 26 yards out, after UConn fumbled on the Huskies’ first offensive play.Hill danced away from pressure late in the first half and found Terenn Houk open to his left for a 35-yard touchdown catch-and-run that made it 28-7 at the half. The quarterback capped the game with a 26-yard touchdown run to complete a 90-yard, fourth-quarter drive that sent the fans to the exits.Penalties slowed the game down as BYU committed 15 of them for 150 yards. UConn was flagged eight times for 90 yards.A fumble by BYU’s Mathews at midfield led to UConn’s only touchdown. Whitmer led the Huskies on a six-play drive that ended with freshman redshirt Josh Marriner (Chesapeake, Va.) scoring from a yard out in the second quarter.Redshirt sophomore Bobby Puyol (North Palm Beach, Fla.) made a 35-yard field goal for UConn in the fourth quarter. The Huskies put together an 11-play drive to start the second half, but failed after faking a 40-yard field goal.UConn’s top receiver, senior Geremy Davis (Lawrenceville, Ga.), finished with seven catches for 96 yards. He spent some time in the fourth quarter in the locker room, but returned before the end of the game.

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. - University of Connecticut senior wide receiver Deshon Foxx (Lynchburg, Va.) had a 72-yard punt return a touchdown in the third quarter to help lead the Husky football team to a 19-16 win over Stony Brook on Saturday at Rentschler Field before a crowd of 23,543.The win improves UConn to 1-1 on the season and gives Husky head coach Bob Diaco his first career college head coaching win. Stony Brook falls to 0-2 on the season.UConn redshirt senior wide receiver Geremy Davis (Lawrenceville, Ga.) caught six passes for 113 yards and a 30-yard touchdown and moved into seventh place on the Huskies all-time receiving list with 1,980 career yards.“It took us 10 weeks last year just to get one win,” Davis said. “A win is a win. These guys fought hard -- defense, offense and special teams.”The Seawolves, from the powerful Colonial Athletic Association, led much of the first half and trailed just 12-10 at halftime.Foxx gave UConn a 19-10 lead in the third quarter when he grabbed a 61-yard Luke Allen punt that had bounced over his head, turned left, then reversed field and found a seam down the middle.“He definitely outkicked his coverage,” Foxx. “I got a lucky bounce and when I was turning around I noticed that I had a whole lot of field to work with, so I just did what I can do and I had great blockers.”Stony Brook, which outgained UConn 300 yards to 223, put together a 14-play, 88-yard drive in the fourth quarter, capped by a 14-yard touchdown pass from Conor Bednarski to Will Tye. The Seawolves failed to recover an onside kick and could not move the ball after getting in back in the final minute deep in their own territory.UConn opened the game with a five-play, 40-yard drive that ended with a 42-yard field goal from redshirt sophomore Bobby Puyol (North Palm Beach, Fla.), who added a 27-yarder in the second quarter.Stony Brook took a 7-3 first-quarter lead after a punt pinned UConn on its own one-yard line. Safety Max Martinez then stripped the ball and Naim Cheeseboro recovered in the end zone. The Seawolves added another field goal late in the quarter after a UConn fumble, giving Stony Brook the ball at the Husky 20-yard line The Huskies had just 63 yards of offense before putting together a 70-yard drive late in the second quarter that put UConn up to stay.Redshirt senior quarterback Chandler Whitmer (Newnan, Ga.) found Davis in the right corner of the end zone for a 30-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was blocked. Whitmer completed 12 of 27 passes for 142 yards. He also was the Huskies leading rusher with 52 yards on 13 carries.UConn was also helped by its kicking game. Puyol’s first field goal was the longest of his career and redshirt freshman punter Justin Wain (Wilming-ton, N.C.) averaged 41.8 yards on nine punts. Stony Brook was forced to start six second-half drives inside its own 20-yard line.“The team today showed a lot of grit and grind,” said Diaco. “Our brother-hood shined through. Our culture shined through.”

TAMPA, Fla. -- USF quarterback Mike White passed for 113 yards and a touchdown to lead the Bulls to a 17-14 win over the University of Connecticut football team before a rain-soaked an-nounced crowd of 28,723. UConn falls to 1-3 on the season while USF is 2-2 and the game was the American Athletic Conference opener for both squads.

White threw 30 yards to Rodney Adams and Marlon Mack ran a yard for first-quarter touchdowns that provided USF’s defense with most of the help the Bulls needed to win. Chris Dunkley sacked Husky redshirt senior quarterback Chandler Whitmer (Newnan, Ga.), forcing a fumble that the USF cornerback recov-ered at the Huskies 19 to set up Mack’s TD for a quick 7-0 lead. White’s scoring pass to a wide-open Adams on fourth-and-10 made it 14-0 late in the opening quarter.

UConn closed the game to 14-7 just before the half as senior cornerback Byron Jones (New Britain, Conn.) returned an inter-ception 70-yards for a touchdown with five seconds left. The inter-cepted pass glanced off the hands of Adams just before halftime. The UConn cornerback came close to stepping out of bounds as he crossed midfield on the runback, however the touchdown stood following a replay review. The game remained 14-7 until USF kicker Marvin Kloss hit what would become the game-win-ning score on a 19-yard field goal with 6:03 left in the game.

UConn pulled with three points on Whitmer’s 32-yard TD pass to senior wide receiver Geremy Davis (Lawrenceville, Ga.) with 1:19 remaining. USF recovered the ensuing onside kick and ran out the clock.

It was another close game in a series USF leads 7-5. The last eight meetings have been decided by seven or fewer points, and neither team has scored more than 19 in the last five matchups. The Huskies managed just 41 yards and on 18 plays in the first half and finished with a season-low 145 yards overall - more than half coming on the drive that ended with Whitmer’s TD pass to Davis. UConn didn’t pick up its second first down of the night until freshman running back Arkeel Newsome (Ansonia, Conn.) broke a 16-yard run midway through the third quarter. Three plays later, Whitmer got his first completion.

Whitmer finished six of 10 for 88 yards and no interceptions. The TD pass to Davis extended the receiver’s streak of consecutive games with at least one catch to 30. A week after yielding 589 yards to North Carolina State, the USF defense limited UConn to 57 rushing and didn’t allow the Huskies offense to cross midfield until the final two minutes.

Mack rushed for 103 yards on 31 carries for the Bulls, and White completed 10 of 18 passes with one interception.

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. -- Senior wide receiver Geremy Davis (Lawrenceville, Ga.) had 80 yards of receiving with eight catches, but the University of Connecticut committed two key turnovers as Temple posted a 36-10 college football victory over the Hus-kies on Saturday by a 36-10 score before a crowd of 27,755 at Rentschler Field. UConn falls to 1-4 on the season and 0-2 in American Athletic Conference play while the Owls are 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the league.

Turnovers hurt the Huskies, as Temple scored on a 93-yard interception return on the opening drive of the game for the Owls only points of the first half as they led 7-3 at intermission. Temple opened the second half with three touchdowns in the span of 7:26 to take control of the game with a 28-3 lead. The Owls scored on an 11-yard fumble recovery for the third touchdown.

Freshman Arkeel Newsome (Ansonia, Conn.) had a 74-yard touchdown catch from redshirt senior Chandler Whitmer (Newnan, Ga.), who threw for 163 yards and a touchdown. The touchdown pulled the Huskies to within 28-10, but Temple added a safety and two fourth quarter field goals for the win.

“We’ve got to eliminate game-changing turnovers,” UConn head coach Bob Diaco said. “Sixteen uncontested points. Impossible to win, a pick-six, fumble recovery for a touchdown and safety.”

The Huskies seemingly had a touchdown out of halftime when redshirt junior Wilbert Lee (Brooklyn, N.Y.) recovered a muffed kickoff in the end zone, but a UConn offsides on the kickoff ne-gated the play. Temple responded with quarterback P.J. Walker ultimately finding Jalen Fitzpatrick, who finished with 108 yards receiving, for a 42-yard pass play and a 14-3 lead.

UConn controlled the Temple offense well in the first half. The Owls managed only 31 total yards in the first half on 21 plays and had one first down, but the Huskies couldn’t capitalize. Redshirt sophomore Bobby Puyol (North Palm Beach, Fla.) hit a 30-yard field goal in the final moments of the first half to trim the lead to 7-3 going into the half.

NEW ORLEANS -- The Tulane football team, led by a stingy defense and the play of quarterback Nick Montana, defeated the University of Connecticut football team by a score of 12-3 on Saturday before a crowd of 23,076 at Yulman Stadium. Tulane improves to 2-4 on the season and 1-1 in American Athletic Con-ference play while the Huskies are 1-5 and 0-3.

UConn redshirt senior quarterback Chandler Whitmer (Newnan, Ga.) was 17 of 24 for 141 yards and the Huskies took an early 3-0 lead on a career-long 44-yard field goal by redshirt sophomore Bobby Puyol (North Palm Beach, Fla.).

Tulane gained 167 yards on the ground, led by Sherman Badie’s 77 yards on 14 carries. Montana completed 19 of 26 passes for 135 yards in his first start this season. Montana was Tulane’s starter a season ago as a junior, helping the Green Wave to a 7-6 record and its first bowl bid in more than a decade. He played with an injured throwing shoulder that season and in August, he lost his job to redshirt freshman Tanner Lee. Lee injured his shoulder vs. Rutgers two weeks ago.

Montana hit his first four passes for 53 yards, including a 21-yard-er over the middle, and his seven-yard scoring strike to Charles Jones to make it 7-3. Tulane took a 9-3 lead when defensive end Tyler Gilbert surged into the backfield and cut down UConn for a safety - a play set up by Peter Picerelli’s 38-yard punt to the UConn one-yard line.

Green Wave freshman kicker Andrew DiRocco, who missed four of five field goal attempts entering the game, hit a career-long 38-yarder in the fourth quarter to make it 12-3. That field goal attempt was possible after Montana spun away from what looked like a certain third-down sack, rolled right and threw back across his body for a 10-yard, first-down completion to Justyn Shackl-eford.

All three of UConn’s turnovers occurred in Tulane territory. In the second quarter, Doss intercepted a UConn third-down pass on the Tulane 38. Later in the quarter, Monroe ripped the ball away from a Husky runner as the pair went to the ground on the Tulane 30.

Down 7-3 in the middle of the third quarter, UConn was in field goal range, but Tulane once again recovered a fumble by Mon-roe.
