the curriculum while maintaining high achievement standards for all."

Recent research in neuroscience shows that each brain processes information differently. The way we learn is as individual as DNA or fingerprints. In its research, CAST has identified three primary brain networks and the roles they play in learning.

A universally-designed curriculum offers the following:

• Multiple means of representation to give learners various ways of acquiring information and knowledge

• Multiple means of action and expression to provide learners alternatives for demonstrating what they know, and

• Multiple means of engagement to tap into learners' interests, challenge them appropriately, and motivate them to learn

Two approaches

– Retrofitting (realizing that a process is not working so decide instead to remodel and find a solution after the fact in order to fit the student into the existing program)

– Universal Design for Learning (this approach creates and designs products and environments so that they can be used without modifications)
