he Winter Bash is a project being held

in Uitenhage, when autumn welcomes

winter. These months are known for

icy cold conditions and the temperaturedrop-

ping close to zero degrees Celsius.

Alida Davis of the Underprivileged Chil-

drens Ministry and her helpers departed at

03:00 last Saturdaymorning to visit thehome-

less children of the streets.

The Ministrys helpers included members

fromUbuntu Community Development Solu-

tions (UCDS),Women inBusiness, Uitenhage

14 Round Table, Rotary Club of Uitenhage

South and the Uitenhage Lions Club who all

provide a service to the local community.

According to Denis Murphy from the

Uitenhage Lions Club, the time is of impor-

tance as the flight or fight people of the com-

munity are at peace then.

Theyareoverseenby their guardswho

take turns tokeepawatchful eye for threats

that include their constant companions of

hunger and the cold weather that is the ulti-

mate threat, said Denis Murphy.

Davis and helpers dished out hot meals,

blankets and clothing to both the elderly and

mainly the very young. In many cases these

included children under six whose roof

consists of the stars and their beds a pave-

ment.

The Ministry serves approximately 3 000

people per month with food and clothing and

in turn is totally dependent on the community

and local business for donations and assist-

ance. A word of thanks to Jacky Sharp of the

Willow Dam Garden Centre whose presence

contributed to a easing the plight of those in

need on the night of four degrees Celsius.

t has beenmore than amonth that certain

homes in theRosedale areahave occasion-

ally been without water.

Residents are furious and daily chores are

left undone as the water gets cut off at any

time of the daywithout a warning or explana-

tion from the municipality.

We thought that there was just a minor

problem with the pipes and the municipality

would have it sorted out in no time, said

Corene Bezuidenhout, a resident of Cygnet

Street, Rosedale

However, this continued for weeks on end

and to this day, no explanationhas been given

to the public or a warning as to when the wa-

ter would get cut off.

The affected streets include: Cygnet, Heron

and Tinktinkie Streets as well as a few streets

in the Mountain View area.

It started a few weeks ago when the water

just began to disappear in the mornings and

returned around 17:00.

Sometimes therewould only be avery small

stream and people had to fill buckets and bot-

tleswithwater to carry them through the day.

BernardHoffman, a residentwho is also do-

ing masonry in the area said the water short-

age affects his business.

Wehave to finishbuildingwithin a certain

time frame, but the work gets slowed down

as someonehas to fetch uswater fromadiffer-

ent area. That person has to get paid, said

Hoffman.

According to amunicipal official whowish-

es not to be named, the water shortage is as

a result of a broken pump at the purification

system in Kabah.

As a result of this, water from the Groendal

Dam cannot reach the Rosedale reservoir and

residents are left without water.

The reasonwhy the area still receives very

small streams of water at times is that the res-

ervoir in Fairbridge Heights is linked to the

one in Rosedale, the official said.

We expect to have the pump fixed very

soon.

We are confident that the improvements

being made at the purification system are for

the better, he added.

When asked why the community was given

no explanation, the official claimed that a

statement was sent out.

Over the past week, however, the munici-

pality has started to make provision by send-

ing out water tankers to the various affected

areas.

Rosedaleswaterlessweeks

Numerous collisions and fatal acci-

dents recorded at the intersection of

NorthStreet andGraaff ReinetRoad in

Uitenhagenecessitated action.This re-

sulted in plans to construct a traffic

calming circle at this intersection.

Traffic counts were done during

the morning, midday and afternoon

and the midday counts were done to

take cognizance of the traffic that

egresses out of North Street when

schools comeout, saidCouncillor Pie-

ter Terblanche fromWard 51, Uitenha-

ge.

The proposal, after a detailed sur-

vey and analysis, was to upgrade the

intersection to a traffic circle. The cir-

cle will reduce speeds, especially from

the north-east approach as motorists

enter Uitenhage from Kirkwood.

Raised pedestrian crossings are rec-

ommended on all approaches to de-

crease the operating speed. These will

have built in solar powered flashing

LED lights.

There will also be new sidewalks,

and warning signs regarding the new

traffic circle will be erected.

The landscaping of the traffic circle

island centre will include stones.

Construction wil start soon and will

be completed within four weeks.

homeless people braving the icy conditions,

made a sales executive fromAlgoa Toyota re-

alize that he could make a difference in the

community.

This is in line with Toyota South Africas

Knights philosophy to set an example of be-

ing balanced professionals in their working

environments, community, social and envi-

ronmental activities.

Aspirant Knight, Dewald Oelofse, sales ex-

ecutive at Algoa Toyota Uitenhage, will be

collecting blankets to hand-out to the home-

less in town.

project and challenging other businesses in

town also to get involved by donating blan-

kets to this project. Blankets can be dropped

Birders will join groups birding in different

trip through the Nyathi area of the Park,

which is an exclusive concession area; lazily

float up the Sundays River on a ferry spotting

different species of kingfishers and water

fowl or take a ride through Addo game view-

ing area and see parts of Addo that are not

open to the general public.

a get-together and ends with a venison potjie

on Saturday evening.
