The spray booth must be suitable for the application of specified waterborne or EPA-compliant low bake automotive paint systems. 1

The booth must comply with the following guidelines and considerations:

- Extraction must suit the physical size of the spray booth and be correctly balanced to the volume of air input.

- Air filtration and extraction to meet all EPA requirements, including recommended paint and booth manufacturer recommendations.

- Compliant with local legislation including the European Paint Directives (EPD), Health & Safety guidance notes & Environmental Protection Act (EPA).

- Achieve a minimum panel temperature during the drying cycle of 60ºC within 10 minutes.

- Lighting - minimum 1000 lux high frequency and energy efficient.

- All safety and environmental devices required by law must be fitted and in working order, including positive booth pressure indicators, air cut-off valves etc.

- Quality and build specifications must comply with the latest Health and Safety guidelines.

- Spray booths, ovens and mixing rooms should be covered by a relevant manufacturer approved maintenance programme.

The mixing room must be a separate, enclosed and compliant facility that meets local authority regulations and business volumes. 1- Correct lighting, heating and ventilation must be used at all times for the mixing of paint products.

- A colour matching quality light source must be available.

- All equipment must comply with current legislation, application techniques and cleaning guidelines.

- High Volume Low Pressure (HVLP) spray guns, as recommended by the paint supplier, must be used to achieve a premium quality paint finish.

Do not clean aluminium work areas with compressed air - risk of explosion!

Basic requirements for aluminium workplaces:

Must satisfy concerns relating to corrosion protection and explosion within workshop environment.

Work areas where steel and aluminium are machined must be separated.

- because steel swarf and grinding dust can cause corrosion damage.

- aluminium dust is explosive in particle sizes below 5 micron.

The workplace must be screened against steel/grinding dusts and steel swarf from adjacent workshop areas. (e.g. with curtains, mobile partitions or with

permanent partition walls as for a fully equipped workplace.

Repair Bay Cabin size 8.7m long x 5.4m wide x 4m high

Washable walls and floors for wet cleaning are necessary in order to eliminate aluminium dust.

The work area should contain few horizontal surfaces, pipes and lines to reduce dust deposits and allow cleaning by vacuuming or sweeping.

- A 110V/230V power supply should be present.

- A compressed-air connection with min. 6-8 bar pressure is required (connection for pneumatic tools).

- Existing straightening benches and straightening bracket sets can be used alternately provided they are cleaned thoroughly beforehand.

Aluminium dust extraction must be separate from all others and must not be used on other materials i.e. steel or composite.

Further requirements:

- The vehicle to be repaired must be covered, with the exception of the immediate repair area, in order to avoid consequential damage.

- If grinding work on steel parts is necessary, e.g. steel rivets, the aluminium parts must be protected against flying sparks due to risk of corrosion.

NO approved body centre is required to have separate body alignment systems for steel and aluminium repairs.

Basic essentials for body repair alignment systems include:

- A planned, documented and signed maintenance schedule must be in place identifying a wash down and cleaning process undertaken when switching

between a steel and or aluminium repair.

- Calibration and verification records must be retained and produced on request.

- A dedicated aluminium clamp set must be used when replacing or repairing welded structural body components.

- A ‘measuring system’ must be used when checking for possible misalignment of body components. The system must be permanently available for use

when structural components require replacement. The recommendation is to print the relevant data before and after repair, and retain for your records.

- At least one permanently employed operative must be fully trained and skilled in the use of the body jig and associated measuring system.

Note : Additional body repair alignment systems will be added to the equipment standards in due course and communicated to markets.

Note : Suitable for structural and cosmetic aluminium repairs.

Important: An explosion-proofed work place is only necessary if using abrasives with a grain size higher than P 400. Only these produce critical dusts smaller than

5 µ. Generally only coarse dusts are produced in the bodyshop when milling, sawing and drilling. Regular cleaning of the workplace must be carried out and

documented. If these requirements are met, explosion-proofing is not necessary.
