turned out in their race day finery.

With hats and bright umbrellas dominating the skyline, the judges had a tough decision crowning the Best Dressed winner, but one lady who didn’t

Appletiser StyleFIX

For the third year running, Appletiser StyleFIX will take to the roads and visit shopping centres right across the island of Ireland with a fabulous runway show and beauty stations which offer stylistas a fabulous one-stop fashion-fix as they shop. Lightly sparkling, natural fruit juice Appletiser has once again teamed up with Northern Ireland’s top shopping destinations and is bringing StyleFIX to Belfast’s Victoria Square (Saturday 18 August) and Foyleside Shopping Centre, L/Derry (Saturday 13 October).

Audience members at the events will enjoy high-impact fashion shows throughout their shopping Saturday where models will showcase a whole host of hot-to-trot summer trends on the catwalk. With a super selection of stylish high street stores, Appletiser StyleFIX will have something to set every style aficionado’s heart racing. From beachwear, sports luxe and cool summer whites to flamboyant florals, pretty pastels and enviable

ethnic prints; no style fix will be left unsolved. Those attending will also be able to sample delicious complimentary Appletiser while receiving free advice and pampering mini makeovers.

The Ireland shows also mark the launch of the Appletiser’s new handbag-sized bottle in June. Now lighter and more practical, Appletiser can fit into every girl’s lifestyle and bag when on the go. Denise Farrell, Brand Manager for Appletiser comments: “Appletiser is a unique lightly sparkling drink, made from 100% fruit juice and has no added sugars or colours. And summer afternoons just became all the more refreshing with our new, lightweight bright green bottle now available for ladies who are rushing from one meeting to another or are lucky enough to lunch at the local park, making it even easier to enjoy that magical fruit burst of Appletiser while still getting in one of their five a day.”

Stylist and show organiser Cathy Martin says fashionistas will have a lot to be tempted by while shopping. “Summer has finally arrived and we’re ready to get out there and don the season’s latest trends. Summer is going to be awash with powerful prints, soft, chic nudes and colour bursts such as candy apple red and fiery, burnt orange. A 1970s floppy hat is a must and digital floral and painterly botanical looks make it big on dresses. For evening, the sexiest hot pants and minis are still very much on trend.”

The Appletiser StyleFIX tour will be calling at Athlone, Belfast, Dublin, Derry and Sligo. Look out for the dates in a centre near you or log on to facebook at www.facebook.com/AppletiserIreland for weekly updates.

IntoTheBlueThe recurring nautical trend has been thrown overboard this summer for a more deep-sea fantasy theme. The trend isn’t over exaggerated with obvious fishtail hems or unrealistic silhouettes, but rather with a clean, subtle nod to the ebbs and flows of the ocean. The realm of mermaids and the life aquatic were inspiration for everyone from Versace to Alexander McQueen. From sequin sparkle and iridescent metallics to fish scale prints and aqua hues, designers were scouring the ocean floor for musings.

Versace went for a she-sells-seashells approach. Seahorses and shells sat proudly on skirts with gold studs, while prints showed mermaids, starfish and seashells. Chanel sent models down the runway in pearl encrusted creations (as Florence Welsh sang from a giant clamshell), while Givenchy turned their models into dazzling sea creatures with sequin adornments on flowing garments.

Achieve the look in modest doses with statement coral earrings, a delicate sequined dress, or pearlescent accessories. Take a dip with my oceanic inspired picks!

Ulster Life welcomes our new resident hair guru, michael quinn.July is Summer Madness at Michael Quinn Hairdressing, Royal Avenue, Belfast. Take

advantage and receive a blow dry for a sizzling £15.

I regularly get my hair highlighted and straighten it every day. I get a full head of blonde, which as you can imagine makes my hair incredibly dry. Recently my hair has started to look really fragile and dry with split ends. I have tried everything but nothing seems to work. Is there anything you would recommend to help repair my hair and restore lustre and strength to my locks?

It is not surprising that you are experiencing dry, brittle hair—it is a common problem with people who dye and highlight their hair blonde. The bleaching products used when dyeing your hair can be very harsh, which is why your hair needs a bit of help. To repair your hair, I recommend adopting an intensive regime including the new Matrix Total Results Repair line. The shampoo and conditioner will leave your hair feeling and looking shinier, stronger and nourished, while the Strength Pak Intensive Treatment works to reconstruct the hair fibre and protects from further damage whilst intensely nourishing it. For daily nourishment, use the Break Fix leave-in Elixir from the range to instantly smooth and detangle hair without weighing it down. For added impact, try adding foods rich in iron, zinc, and biotin to your diet to contribute to your hair’s recovery. Examples of these power-foods include lean beef and chicken, lentils, cashews, beans, and eggs. And whatever you do—avoid running a hairbrush through wet, tangled hair!

I have noticed recently that the headband seems to be making a major comeback! I was a huge fan of headbands as a child, and am really excited to see the trend becoming popular again. Can you give me some pointers on how to style my hair to make a headband look sophisticated rather than childish?

From the popular daisy chain headband seen at all of the music festivals, to a 50s inspired handkerchief headband, this summer the style is all the rage. Headbands are a really great practical solution to keeping fringe and shorter pieces of hair off of your face in the warmer months, but they are also an amazing fashion statement that can help to complete a look. One grown-up way to rock a headband is around your head like a halo rather than underneath your hair. Wear your hair in relaxed waves or a twisted updo like Kirsten Dunst’s lovely goddess look here. Boohoo.com has an excellent range of headbands this summer that range from pretty flower chains to punk-inspired handkerchiefs. The Marissa Denim Heart Print Wire Headband, £4, at boohoo.com is a great way to add a bit of charm to a summertime outfit no matter what length or style your hair.

I’m attending a wedding next month and I really want a unique, fresh hair style. My hair falls just below my shoulders and is naturally straight, and occasionally a bit limp. I don’t want the usual, boring hairstyles seen at weddings, but want to look elegant and polished. Please help!

The worst part of wearing an intricate updo for a wedding is that often times, especially after a night of dancing, pieces start to come loose. A great way to make sure your look stays elegant throughout the night is to create an updo that will only look better as pieces naturally fall out. Gone are the days of plastic-looking curls pinned painfully to your head. Hair trends this summer embrace texture and movement and are about soft feminine looks rather than overly-fussy, polished updos. For inspiration, turn to Emma Stone’s low updo in this photo. Wearing your hair back like this will eliminate the hassle of maintaining a voluminous look throughout the night and looks wispy and sexy while being pulled off your neck for a night of dancing. To create the look, add a bit of Matrix Design Pulse’s Go Big Extra Strong Hold Mousse to damp hair and blow dry using your hand to scrunch and add texture to your hair. Next, twist pieces back along your head and pin at the base of your neck. Don’t worry too much about pieces falling out while pinning! A bonus of wearing a look like this is that the front of your hair will be elegant and simple and have plenty of room for a great hairpiece.

Sunshine Chic At The Outlet

Poolside glamour for Summer 2012 is hitting all the right notes with a wide selection of swimwear and accessories racing on to the high street shelves. Some fantastic styles catching our eye this season are the sassy string bikini, the figure-hugging tankini and the alluring halter neck. If you can’t wait to hit the coast with your beach-toned body, then the string bikini is for you – it’s sexy, cooler than ever and quite simply effortless. Solid shades are still big this year and Calvin Klein’s classic grey bikini set (available from The OUTLET, Banbridge) is the perfect complement for those of us with soft sun-kissed skin. For something more dramatic, patterned swimwear abounds this summer with styles ranging from flirty floral prints to exciting ethnic prints and sporty stripes. This abstract floral patterned bikini set from Calvin Klein at The OUTLET is fabulous for flattering small chests to give a fuller look. Ladies who are

taller can benefit from the halter neckline too because it gives a longer torso look. To play down any body flaws or draw attention away from your tummy area, the tankini is the way to go! Tankinis are more versatile than a swimsuit as you can mix and match away. Tall ladies can also benefit here when swimsuits are too short in the body. With matching folding briefs, this tankini from M&S at The OUTLET is in a stunning turquoise hue, and with moulded cups it is ultimately extremely flattering offering fabulous shape, support and comfort. Try colour blocking with a sarong wrapped around the hips for accenting the waist and offering extra cover. Add a 70’s style floppy hat, teal patent bag, a pair of wedges and tortoiseshell shades, and you’ve never been so beach ready!

DSQUARED

REVIVAL

Focus on Fashion

Motifs, muted tones and relaxed slouchy fabrics come together to

form the basis of the latest trend to be revived, 90’s Grunge. It would appear this landmark decade is cool

once more, as again fashion comes full circle. The anti-fashion attitude of the 1990s screams the “can’t be bothered” nonchalance of an aged colour palette, ripped stonewashed denim, faded tees and oversized flannel jumpers.

Although the staple pieces and styles remain the same, this season’s ‘modernised grunge’ has a new colourful edge; it channels the dark but feminine, the strong yet vulnerable elements of this dishevelled, nostalgic trend.

This season designers embraced the opportunity to revisit this subculture, at Milan Fashion Week twin designer duo Dean and

Dan Caten of Dsquared2 fused a collection of grunge inspired looks with a Western twist. Whilst

Topshop presented their usual on-point interpretation of the trend, offering fresh takes on the core staples of 90’s grunge, including

checked shirts and classic rocker tees. D&G layered oversized knits with colourful text motifs, paired with restyled timeless hi-top trainers, meanwhile at Isabel Marant ribbed flannel shirts were teamed with tie-dyed boyfriend jackets.

As we go to print here at Ulster Life, the raindrops are smacking hard against the window panes and floods are wreaking havoc across parts of Northern Ireland. No surprise then that lots of us are lusting after a warm, sunny holiday to wash the rainy blues away. But given the financial situations many of us are now facing (not to mention a certain bank’s whoopsie doopsies), the holiday dreams just won’t become a reality this summer for some. Cue the fake tan review – I mean, let’s face it, we’ve all been there with various experiences and products and some just definitely don’t cut the mustard. In fact some can look the colour of mustard! Let’s start then with a Top Ten Tips when tanning:

1. Wash.

This may sound obvious but my tanning experts tell me that some people don’t do it well enough before

tanning themselves or coming to a salon. Eeeww! A gentle but soapy gel or soap will do the trick – but whatever you do, incorporate exfoliation into the scrub-a-dub-dub! And that brings us to point 2. 2. Exfoliate:

This will remove any dead skin which can often look deeper and uneven in colour when tanned. (Remember orange elbows? Dead, dry skin!) The exfoliation will also give your skin a good polish and will prepare it for the moisturising products which should be step 3.

3. Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise!

In theory, you should be moisturising every day and after every shower or bath. But a pre-tan cream up is essential! This will smooth and hydrate the skin and make it easier to apply tan, however don’t apply tan straight away after moisturising,

For those NOT jetting off to warmer climes, our Spa Sleuth Cathy Martin takes a look at the best products and treatments to get the perfect tan at home. She looks

at everything from the golden glow to the deep Brazilian babe look and all that lies in between.

36

37

especially if you use an oil or a really oil-based cream or butter. The tan can simply slide off, or worse still, it can mix badly with the oils or other ingredients and create lumps and bumps which are not pretty; so let the product absorb onto the surface of the skin and into the pores for at least a couple of hours for optimum results. And remember to moisturise from the inside out too. Your skin is a working organ like the heart, lungs or liver and needs daily and regular hydration, so if it’s dry on the surface, imagine what your lungs and liver are like! Drink up & slap on – that’s our advice!

4. It’s time to tan!

And now to decide which type of tan to get. There are a few factors which usually decide for us – price, convenience, time are three of them. For optimum results, have an expert apply your tan – be that a professional spray tan or application or a self-tan. Professional Spray Tans can correct tan lines and add body contouring and usually look the best. Our favourite tans include Vita Liberata at House of Fraser as the girls there pay particular attention to hands and feet and always avoid leaving you with that ‘oompah-loompah’ look. Self-Tanners are a cheaper route and usually easy to use in the privacy of your own home, but there are so many on the market that they range in colour, quality and price – see our picture board for some of our favourites. And don’t forget to test a small discreet part of your body to see which tone works best with your skin colour.

5. Next stop is to relax, sleep and take it easy while your tan works its wonders.

Some tans smell bad and some come off really badly on the sheets, so remember to wear loose clothing – preferably cotton – and maybe sleep in the other room on old sheets if your partner’s a bit fussy. And don’t forget if you cuddle up to him or her in the night, he can end up with a patch of colour wherever you lay!

6. Up an’ at ‘em!

The next morning, any excess tan product from a self tanner or a spray should be showered off. No need to exfoliate here obviously as a light rinse will do the job and the colour left behind will look much more natural and suited to your own skin tone.

Job done. Just remember to bear in mind your new skin tone when applying make up. Bobbi Brown says using makeup to give your skin a sun-kissed look is like “instant gratification.” Her advice for applying it is to “use a short, fluffy brush to apply bronzer where the sun naturally hits your face – your forehead, cheeks, nose, and chin – and dust your neck and chest if you’re wearing a bare top.” She also recommends a gels or cream for a “dewy look.” We love a bit of dew. In terms of ‘what next?’, I turned to Todd Beckman, owner of The Tan Company, who offered these handy snippets of aftercare too. “Always, always, always wait at least four to six hours before showering or swimming. And always use moisturiser daily, it will prolong your tan as well as giving your skin a natural sheen. And finally, for the water babies among you, stay away from salt water and chlorine as these will both strip the tan colour from your skin – and not always evenly!”

ULSTER LIFE TALKS TO OPEN + DIRECT MISS NI 2012,TIFFANY BRIEN

Congratulations on your new title of Open + Direct Miss NI. Now you’ve had time to let it sink in how does it feel?

Thank you! To be honest I still have to remind myself sometimes! It is amazing; I can’t believe I’m this year’s Open + Direct Miss NI. I am so excited for the year ahead and will definitely make the most of everything that comes my way. This year is a once in a life time opportunity and I am going to put all my efforts into the role. It took a while after the competition for it to seem real, but life has certainly changed, I will now be seen in my Miss NI car sponsored by the lovely Downey’s in Newtownards and fully insured by Open + Direct, this is a huge help as I’m out and about everyday in Northern Ireland. It is hard work but there is a lot of glam that goes with it, and for that I’m helped by Beauty Culture and Michelle International to ensure I’m keeping up appearances! There is a more serious side to the role that I’m very willing to undertake!

Tell us a little bit about life pre show?

I was studying Marketing at the University of Ulster in Jordanstown last year and have just completed first year. Prior to that I was very into my sailing, I had been competing for Ireland from the age of 16 and travelled around the world racing in different events. It was incredibly hard work and entailed a lot of commitment and

determination. I took a break from the sailing to get my head showered and during this break was introduced to Miss Northern Ireland, so I decided to enter it for a bit of fun last year. Once getting a taster for that world I was hooked! I absolutely loved the people and the industry and decided to work hard in it. My efforts I put into sailing were switched to this. After entering Miss Northern Ireland last year I had to do it again as I had the best weekend of my life! I never expected to win, I just wanted to experience the competition and the Final all over again, so to actually come away with the crown is so overwhelming!

What are your style tips for summer?

I’m in love with maxi’s! They’re so easy to wear and really fun to accessorize. I absolutely love colour so anything bright and summery you’ll see me in! You’ll be able to tell my style from all the gorgeous dresses I’ve chosen from Beverly Hills boutique for Miss World, they’re all colourful and bright! My staples are white skinnies, with a plain bright top and jewelled sandals! My favourite place to shop is The Outlet, they have a huge array of summer styles and nothing can beat sitting down with a Starbucks after a hard days shopping! Have you picked up any beauty tips to share with Ulster Life readers?I have learnt a lot about make up from the fabulous Paddy McGurgan,

I now use Stila foundation with Laura Mercier primer and a MAC bronzer. I always watch and ask questions when I’m getting my make up done in the hope that when I get home I’ll be able to do it as good as the makeup artists. I’ve always been told to be very careful with my skin and use products from the Dermalogica range which I get from Beauty Culture, these are fantastic and have made a huge difference to my skin tone! What’s a typical day in your life consist of now having been crowned Miss NI?

Every day is different! Some days can consist of photo shoots or interviews. Other days can involve modelling or promotions. I try and do everything I can! Miss World is a couple of weeks away. Are you looking forward to travelling to China?

Oh yes I can’t wait. I go on the 17th July, which is creeping up quite quickly! China should be amazing, I have been once before for a sailing event but never got to see the sights so it’ll be fabulous being able to tour around some of the big cities. Of course I can’t forget the Miss World Final Show on 18th August which will be incredible I’m sure. From speaking with previous Miss NI’s Lori Moore and Finola Guinanne, they have assured me it will be the best experience of my life.

40

41

When you return (hopefully as Miss World) – Will you complete your studies?

No, I’m taking the year out of my studies to concentrate on my role as Miss Northern Ireland. I wouldn’t want to give my course or my new role any less effort than they deserve so I think it is best to just concentrate on one thing. Being Miss NI will help me with my studies as I study Marketing so I’m learning every day!

What do you get up to in your free time?

Well... I have lots of hobbies I try to keep up, it proves quite difficult to fit everything in but I do try! I still sail a lot - I race about 3 or 4 times

a week. I am also going away to the British Championships as soon as I’m back from Miss World. I’m very sporty and have always loved to be very fit, and would try and go to the gym every day even in between jobs if I have to! I generally try and make my days jam packed, sometimes this isn’t the best idea but it works for me, I love being busy!

What advice would you have for someone wanting to enter next year’s Miss NI?

Do it! It is something that every girl should try, it is the most incredible experience of my life and has changed it forever. I have learnt so much in a year and I’m still learning every day. I have met some wonderful people throughout the

whole process and friends who I’ll know for life. When entering you just have to be yourself, it’s plain, simple advice but it works. My top tips would be smile and relax, you’ll be surprised how far that can get you!

If you are one of the many people not lucky enough to be heading away to sunnier climes this year, don’t fret, you can still fake that summer bronzed glow! I will show you how to achieve chiselled cheekbones, and more importantly how to avoid that “tangoed” look that is so often the product of badly applied bronzer! The most common mistake that people make is to use a huge brush and apply bronzer over the entire face resulting in the fake dirty orange/brown look which I’m sure we all agree is never a good look! The secret to remember is that

bronzer is a product designed to imitate the fresh faced glow you receive from your holidays (or the few good days of weather we get for our “Northern Ireland Summer”) so try to avoid bronzers laden with excess sparkle! Also, when choosing a bronzer select one that is no more than 2 shades darker than your natural skin tone so that your face doesn’t end up looking “dirty”. It should be applied sparingly to the places that the sun will naturally hit. So that is generally your forehead, nose, chin and your cheekbones. A good rule of thumb is to create a figure 3 on each side of your face. So

start at the top of your forehead, then across the cheekbones and then the jawline. Also, to create a chiselled cheek, apply a contouring product just under the cheekbone, and a correctly colour matched blush on the apple of the cheek. This carves out a gorgeous cheekbone shape and enables you to create what you may not naturally have!

Grainne MaherI’m so thrilled at being asked to put together the ‘what’s hot’ in jewellery, accessories and fashion for Ulster Life! We are spoilt for choice with so much homegrown talent, not to mention the wealth of boutiques dotted across the province. I thought perhaps for any of you that might not have come across my work before, this is the perfect chance to show some of what i do myself! Predominantly I am a milliner/a hatter (and suitably mad with it), though in 2011 I also created a new range of laser-cut perspex jewellery

called ‘Pluck & Devour’. This has been received amazingly well across the length and breadth of Ulster and further afield, and it’s most famous outing to date was of course when the MTV Awards rolled into Belfast Last November and the host Selena Gomez sported the ‘Bark at the Moon’ pendant. There are plenty new designs and colourways of my own in the pipeline and I’ll be scouring around NI to see what goodies are on offer on your behalf! Watch this Space!! See you next time x G

Dear Ms Malone,I’ve noticed that neons are all the rage this summer, and I am really enjoying the brightly-coloured garments hanging in shops at the moment. I personally tend to wear more neutral tones to camouflage my lumps and bumps, and worry that embracing bold bright colours will only add emphasis to the areas I’d rather hide. How can I jump on board the neon bandwagon without looking like a traffic cone?Hi-vis Horrors Dear Hi-vis,Neon is a tough trend to pull off for the reason you named—who wants a big glowing sign pointing directly to the bits they’d prefer to cover up? Rather than hiding behind a wardrobe of neutrals this summer, neon may be just the dose of life your clothes need! A smartly-paired neon piece can be a refreshing summery pop of colour that can transform an outfit without breaking the bank. One of my favourite neon colour combinations is grey and yellow. The brightness of the yellow is toned down a bit by the sleepiness of the grey, making the two a perfect pair—just call it ‘industrial chic!’ I am obsessed with Zara’s Neon Box Bag, £19.99. The small bag is a huge bargain that packs a powerful punch and would work amazingly well as a statement piece when paired with a monochromatic grey ensemble.

BT9s PREMIER FASHIONISTASOLVES YOUR FASHION WOES.

Dear Ms Malone,This past weekend I took a trip down memory lane and pulled out all of my old eighties Molly Ringwald films. The abundance of frilly lace skirts and prom-inspired looks from the eighties had me really wishing I could go back in time. It seems like the ‘prom look’ is a look that just will not come back into vogue! Do you have any tips on ways I can incorporate a bit of yesteryear into my day to day wardrobe?Material Girl Dear Material Girl,I have so been there! There is something about Molly Ringwald that makes you want to channel your inner eighties girl and dance to Modern English! While the full-on Madonna-style lace may not be coming back any time soon, the prom look has been brought into the 21st century using more modern cuts and fabrics. Places like boohoo.com have recently released prom lines that are surprisingly versatile and not limited to just to one magical evening in high school. Their dresses make a nod to the eighties look with features like peplums and voluminous lace skirts that are easy to wear even after your teenage years. Boohoo.com’s Lulu Lace Bandeau Skater Dress, £22, is a modern take on the eighties prom dress with loads of lace and a poufy skirt that can easily be styled up or down. And with this bargain there’s no need to feel guilty about chasing your dream of kissing the class hunk in a bridesmaid gown over your birthday cake!

Dear Ms Malone,My boyfriend’s fashion sense is desperate. His wardrobe is filled with drab neutral colours like khaki and grey, and his day-to-day outfit consists of jeans and a long-sleeved tee shirt. We are going on holiday soon to warmer climes, but he would rather spend his hard-earned cash on drinks with his mates or a new gadget rather than investing in a holiday wardrobe. Do you have any stylish ideas for helping him prepare his wardrobe for a sunny summer holiday?Concerned Girlfriend Dear Concerned Girlfriend,The good news is—your boyfriend is normal! Most men, apart from the exceptionally stylish ones, are hesitant to spend their money on expanding their wardrobes, especially to purchase clothes they’ll only wear a few times. Luckily for both of you, minor adjustments can be made to his existing attire to make it holiday-ready. If your man insists on wearing jeans when he’s not at the beach, why not suggest he stylishly cuffs them at the bottoms? This look adds a laid-back, slouchy, vibe to chinos and jeans without requiring your other half to splash out on shorts. I personally think this look is a million times sexier than those horrific ‘man capris’ that I see on holiday, anyway. A great summer staple that your man can invest in is a good pair of boat shoes. These classics by Sperry, on sale for £50 at Office, are designed to get wet, so no need to worry about accidental splashes in the water. They are also an ideal alternative to sandals or flip flops, as he will get more use from them on nice days at home in Northern Ireland as well! Finally, if he is afraid of colour, encourage him to use lighter shades of grey, white, and tan, to embrace a breezy feel that can translate to his home wardrobe.

Optilase, the country’s leading laser eye surgery clinic has introduced KAMRA Vision, the revolutionary new eye surgery which means the end of reading glasses for suitable candidates. As we get older, we lose our near vision. Small tasks such as texting and reading menus can be tricky, even more so if you are unlucky enough to have forgotten your reading glasses! The technical term for this loss of crispness of our near vision, as we get older is “presbyopia”. It’s a natural process that happens to everyone, usually from their mid-40s, even if you have previously had laser vision correction. It is estimated that more than 1.7 billion people around the world experience presbyopia, it’s simply part of the ageing process. Traditionally, most people with presbyopia use reading glasses to improve their near vision but

as we know, with reading glasses come numerous vision and lifestyle constraints. This is the unique benefit of this revolutionary new treatment. With KAMRA Vision comes freedom, convenience and self-sufficiency, no more dependency on reading glasses. Optilase is the first laser eye clinic in Northern Ireland to offer this safe, proven and lasting treatment for presbyopia. Dr Wayne Crewe Brown, Surgeon and Medical Director at Optilase commented: “KAMRA Vision has been in development for over a decade and means life-changing benefits for those who are dependent on reading glasses. It restores vision of objects near the eye and reduces dependency on reading glasses, critically without compromising on distance vision. The result is long-lasting, clear vision; near, far and in between. It’s also proven, with

more than 12,000 KAMRA inlays implanted worldwide, to date”. The KAMRA inlay is a tiny ring with an opening in the centre. It rests under the surface of your cornea over the centre of your pupil. The inlay itself is only 3.8 mm in diameter. It is smaller than a contact lens and weighs less than a grain of salt. The actual procedure is entirely painless and takes, on average, less than 10 minutes. Patients can resume most activities the very next day, free of their reading glasses! Implanting of the KAMRA inlay can be done alone or in combination with LASIK. To find out if you are a suitable candidate and to learn more about the benefits, contact Optilase on 08000 121 565 or email [email protected] or visit: www.optilase.co.uk /www.kamra.com

Pioneering New Eye Surgery Now Available In Northern Ireland

New Boxster out punches its rivals

I’ve never really been a fan of the Porsche Boxster, initially billed as the poor man’s 911 the entry level Porsche captured an entirely new demograph for the German sports car maker. Sadly in Northern Ireland this meant the Porsche brand was now available to middle management types who had previously courted other German Marques with equally appalling aesthetics. Bad hair, terrible shoes and a 30 odd k basic porker in the spot marked MD. It kind of sums up the chap sitting behind the steering wheel, a little false on all

fronts and likely to “holiday” solo not in Monaco.

Having test drove the 1st Gen car with a view to buying a few years back and being given a weekend in which to drive and make up my mind it was sadly a simple no thank you on the Monday morning. Mind you I felt like that after driving an R8 recently too. The Porsche I felt was expensive for the level of kit you got as standard and adding the essentials a car in this price bracket needs, made buying one an incredibly expensive experience.

So much so, you very quickly ended up in used 911 territory.

Things have changed dramatically with the revamped 2rd Generation car. Looks wise, it’s appealing. It looks like a Porsche you’d happily boast of owning. The interior feels and looks quality as it should in a car with a price starting at £37,589 going all the way up to the base S model at £45,384. Anyone that drives a Porsche will tell you the S is the one to go for. Porsche’s official fuel figures range from a respectable urban 26.6

Ulster Life motoring with Barry O’Doherty

69

to a combined 47.9 when the PDK box is selected. Expect to have a couple of MPG off that when opting for standard gear shifts and ticking the S box on the options will have you in the low 30’s at best.

Don’t get me wrong, the standard car with its 2.7 unit can shift but it does feel a little slow when you think about the size of the unit under the bonnet. The 3.4 S changes your mind in an instant. The noise is beautiful, the drive effortless and you don’t feel like you’re driving

something that is forever thinking it could have been something better.

The obvious rivals are AUDI’s TT which is nearing the end of its 2nd generation with an all new 3rd Gen expected early 2013. Mercedes SLK has had a makeover and offers something a little more masculine with its wide gaping nose and shark like profile. BMW’s Z4 is an alternative too, but for sheer fun and excitement the Porsche in S guise will satisfy any serious motorphile out there.

Chris Fearon at Deanes

How do you like your chefs? Hard swearing and wrinkled aka Gordon Ramsey or do you prefer the more loquacious Raymond “voila!!” Blanc? There is no right or wrong choice, either way is perfectly acceptable. Ulster Life had an opportunity to catch up with our very own new celebrity chef Chris Fearon at Deanes at Queens in the university area of Belfast. Not that he would give himself such a label. In fact if you’d seen him on the finals of The Great British Menu for the last 2 years you’ll know that , although capable and confident ,he doesn’t display any sense of the arrogance or self importance that we‘ve grown used to from others operating at this level in his profession. He’s coping well with his new found celebrity status. The exposure has obviously been good for business and now means that tourists come looking for him and are even asking for photos with him and he seems to be happy to oblige.

In fact when quizzed on the usual subjects in relation to the job he was pretty cool. He doesn’t seem to notice the hours anymore, in fact he’d rather work weekends than go out “when the town is full of headers”. Certainly the job can be stressful and when it gets hot in the kitchen it’s easy to let your temper boil over however he “very rarely loses the plot too much “. The implication being that he’s not ruling out smashing a few plates when the need arises. I pressed him on this as I’ve always been under the impression that head chefs had to be highly strung perfectionists to maintain the quality of the dishes that they allow to go to service. He admitted that although the working environment can get a little heated he’d worked with a few who “ were a bit crazy in their own right ” but typically he was very diplomatic. He’s got a great respect for his mentors including Michael Deane. It was also refreshing to hear him praise his contemporaries.

There can be no doubt his leadership has been key to the continued success of Deanes at Queens. He was very clear that the status of the restaurant has as much to do with the work done at the front of house as that in the kitchen. People come to Deanes at Queens for the excellent experience “great service and great food will always stand the test of time“. When asked how he would describe the restaurant and I was expecting to hear a few clichés about modern classic European with a hint of buttermilk. I was surprised to be told “we want to be seen as an accessible eatery, serving top quality produce at the right price that’ll keep people coming back again and again”. Here in lies the simple truth, great chefs produce great food. With the last 10 years seeing such a great move forward in the number of great restaurants & chefs there are more options for diners. Chefs like Chris are ever more aware of the importance of making every service a success!

Patrick ColhounIt was one of those exciting times when months of preparation came to fruition in the space of about a week. The end of May, start of June saw me involved in three openings in which turned out to be the most concentrated and significant period of activity in my career to date. Warning! opened in the Crescent Arts Centre, Belfast, my joint exhibition with London artist Darren MacPherson, whose work, The Return of Ghostdog is pictured, opened in London and a group sculpture exhibition of which I was part opened in Bangor Castle two days later.

Warning!, where do I start? Opening night was one of the hottest days of the year, the gallery was packed to hear Professor Andre Stitt deliver his opening address and to peruse artworks from a significant body of international and local artists. With a title like Warning! it had to deliver and some of the content did not disappoint. For the first time I was able to push the boundaries with the use of latex and hosiery in my work and this no doubt will figure in the future. The show got extensive reviews, including one by White Hot Magazine in New York, the first time the magazine has covered an exhibition in Northern Ireland.

The following week saw my show in London open. A two man, two part show, Darren MacPherson and I opened part one in the brand new Stringer Gallery in Greenwich. A unique gallery in a working factory, the space was half white cube and half exposed retro architectural building

features and suited both sets of work extremely well. As with my show last year with Deepa Mann-Kler, there is a leap of faith needed in terms of going with your gut feeling that the work will work well together, there is no significant planning of what each artist will produce, and set up day is always exciting as you decide how the work will be presented. I don’t think I have ever been as nervous before an opening as we did not make it easy for ourselves. First Thursday in London is a competitive time with openings all over the city vying for the same audience. Add to the mix two unknown artists, a brand new venue and the fact that the heavens opened all day, it did not bode well, but we were delighted to get a significant crowd, which made the event extremely worthwhile. At one stage we were promoted on FAD website beside the wonderful Grayson Perry and one reviewer who visited the show called it ‘Art with Balls’, a statement that will stick with me! We are really looking forward to part two in Belfast in September, more about that later.

To round off the week, the sculpture exhibition in the Walled Garden at Bangor Castle opened on 9th June. Twenty artists from North Down and beyond filled the garden with all sorts of sculpture ranging from traditional sandstone carving to the downright contemporary. After Warning! and London, this was just the calming come down that I needed.

Morton Pinpoint, one of Northern Ireland’s most successful estate and letting agencies, is leading the way in improving student accommodation in Belfast.

In the first partnership of its kind in the UK and Ireland, Queen’s Students’ Union and Morton Pinpoint ‘SU Lets’, has been established for students seeking private

sector accommodation within the University area. Ulster Life talks to the man behind Morton Pinpoint and SU Lets,

Nicholas Brennan

Hi Nicholas, tell us how SU Lets came about…

Well, SU Lets has been in the development stages for nearly three years. The concept of an ethical lettings agency, which is wholly recommended by the university, is something which Queen’s students asked their Students’ Union President and Welfare Officer to address time, and time again. All too often, serious complaints about unfair treatments from landlords, loss of deposits, poor living conditions etc. was high on the agenda, forcing the Students’ Union to sit-up and take action. They fought hard to get SU Lets, in particular Adam McGibbon, Vice President, Welfare, Queen’s Students’ Union who has been championing this since the beginning. From day one, we have worked in close partnership with the students and the University to develop a service which is committed to improving the student experience in the rental market, protecting theirs and indeed the landlord’s rights. Our overall aim is to raise the bar on student accommodation in Belfast.

So how does SU Lets differ from other lettings agencies in Belfast?

Well, as I mentioned, it is the only lettings agency which is wholly recommended by Queen’s University.

This is a first in Northern Ireland; a partnership will benefit both the student and the landlord.

We have direct access to all the Queen’s University students via our office in the Students’ Union building, which is open Monday to Friday from 9.00am to 5.30pm [TBC] and Saturday [TBC], and via the Queen’s database, which we send regular emails to all students with our vacant properties. Landlords have an exceptional opportunity to showcase their properties to the entire Queen’s University student population of Belfast. Student’s now have both a lettings agency and an on-tap advice service regarding all matters relating to student rental accommodation in Belfast.

What types of initiatives are you putting in place to raise the standard of student accommodation?

We are putting in place a number of new initiatives, including our colour-coded mapping system, our deposit policy and three-tiered grading system which will allocate a gold, silver or bronze status to houses, according to their standard. Safety is also very much on our agenda. We plan to have a 24/7 emergency procedure policy in place, whereby students will be directed to a specific telephone number for any incident or emergency related to their

accommodation.Approval certificates will be put in place for houses with multiple occupants, (HMO) with gas safety certificates essential where appropriate, and there are plans to develop this even further. Our main aim is to improve the letting process for students and provide reassurance to their parents, whilst at the same time maximising the landlord’s investment.

How is SU Lets going to date?

I have to say that we have been overwhelmed with the interest from both students and landlords. At the moment we are on a big recruitment drive for landlords. We have had over 700 students enquire about properties since we launched in mid-April and simply cannot meet the demand we are experiencing. It is both overwhelming and tremendously exciting at the same time. I would urge any landlord with student properties to let to get in touch. Not only will SU Lets help protect landlord’s rights and investment, but we carry out guarantor and credit checks as standard. Our aim is to provide landlords with the security of good quality tenants who adhere and sign-up to our charter.

Landlords can get in touch with SU Lets by texting landlords to 80011 or emailing [email protected] For further information visitsulets.net or call 028 9023 1000.
