■ UN efforts at raising awareness over the pastdecade have failed to improve access to routinehealthcare for indigenous people worldwide, andmany are dying prematurely, according to the BMJ. Areport published jointly by the London School ofHygiene and Tropical Medicine and Health Unlimitedshowed that access to Western healthcare is stillrestricted by cultural, financial and geographicalbarriers for such people, and that Western medicinesare considered too costly. Moreover, indigenouspeople are disinclined to use available services, as theyconsider staff to be unfriendly, discriminatory andinsensitive, says the report.Tayal U.
