OUR INCREDIBLE CITY

Newcastle is often voted one of the best (Student Hut, 2020) and most affordable student cities in the UK and we’re proud to call it our home.

Newcastle is the vibrant capital of North East England and one of the most exciting places in the UK.

The city blends the old and new beautifully, with rich historic landmarks and modern architecture.

Compact and easy to navigate, Newcastle offers a wealth of entertainment and activities. From galleries and museums to theatres and music venues; from restaurants and cafes to pubs and clubs, there is so much to do within walking distance of our city campus.

OUR STUNNING REGION

The fun doesn’t stop there. With even more to do just on our doorstep; from rugged countryside to fabulous beaches, historic market towns and intriguing attractions.

Newcastle’s surrounding area of Northumberland is full of culture and places to explore. You can take a walk along the World Heritage site Hadrian’s Wall, or head to Alnwick Castle which was made famous as ‘Hogwarts’ in the Harry Potter film franchise.

Six North East beaches have been granted the International Blue Flag status, making them amongst the best in the world. These include Tynemouth Longsands, where you can enjoy award-winning fish and chips, King Edward‘s Bay and Whitley Bay.

If you fancy something closer then you can head to Gateshead to view the Angel of the North, an iconic sculpture created by Anthony Gormley, and discover the powerful message behind its creation.

No matter what your interests, Newcastle and the North East have something for everyone.

SUPERCHARGE YOUR CV

Working on live projects, taking part in a placement year or studying abroad will build upon your skills and make your CV stand out to future employers.

Placements allow you to get workplace-ready, test your knowledge and skills, and gain invaluable work experience.

To build that perfect CV, you need to get hands-on experience.

Live projects offer the opportunity to work with a company to answer a real brief. Thanks to our extensive connections, we give you opportunities to gain experience at the highest level.

You could find yourself working with companies and organisations like Northumbrian Water, Procter and Gamble, Nissan, and the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, or working on live legal cases while you study.

Choosing to study abroad will not only give you unforgettable experiences and memories, but also considerably increase your employability prospects and help you gain personal contacts that you can benefit from for years to come.

By the time you graduate, you’ll really know what it takes to succeed in the workplace: to respond to a brief, develop innovative solutions and present yourself with confidence.

“ We’re introduced to live projects on our course. The most recent one was with Seaton Delaval Hall, where we worked with the National Trust. It was really interesting; we had a client that we could talk to and ask what they liked and what needed to change.”

Over 200 students choose to study abroad each year to help enhance their CV, expand their academic networks and gain

invaluable experience studying modules which will help them advance within their chosen industry. IT STARTS HERE

You’ll be part of a vibrant learning community engaging in lectures, seminars, workshops and experiential study. This may be a blend of on-campus and online learning, depending on government guidance at the time of study. You’ll help to shape your learning by choosing modules, projects and a dissertation topic to take you exactly where you want to be in your career.

Northumbria Pathways

All of our pathway courses are taught directly on our campuses. Our courses can help international students improve their English language and academic skills to give you the confidence to start your degree.

Foundation Year

This is a four or five year study route for an undergraduate degree. This course is designed for students who have not achieved the entry requirements for their chosen course. Following successful completion of the foundation year, you will automatically progress onto the first year of your degree. Check individual course webpages for progression routes.

Undergraduate Degrees

Undergraduate degrees include BA (Hons), BEng (Hons), BSc (Hons) and LLB qualifications. We offer placements or study abroad options on the majority of our courses which can vary in length depending on the course.

Integrated Master’s

Some courses offer a fully fundable undergraduate degree with the opportunity to undertake a year of study at master’s level.

Degree Apprenticeships

These specialist courses are co-designed with employers to ensure they’re providing the skills that industries are looking for. Students are employed and divide their time between the workplace and study.

Postgraduate Taught Degrees

Postgraduate degrees include MA and MSc qualifications. Master’s usually last one year. We also offer a two-year Advanced Practice option, where students may have the opportunity to undertake a 12-15 week internship, study abroad or research study project in your second year.

PG Cert and PG Dip awards are qualifications you can achieve by studying fewer modules at master’s level.

MRes degrees also have a taught component, but the majority of your time will be spent undertaking independent research.

Postgraduate Research

We have a vibrant community of postgraduate researchers, supported by excellent facilities, and offer a range of PhD/MPhil programmes, research projects and studentships throughout the year. PhD’s provide an opportunity to become an expert in a field you are passionate about, opening doors to prestigious careers in academia, or to research positions across industry and public service. PhD opportunities are regularly posted on our website, please check this for current opportunities.

Higher and degree apprenticeships offer the best of both worlds combining university study and workplace learning. Northumbria University is a leading degree apprenticeship training provider and was one of the first UK universities to offer government-supported degree apprenticeships.

To take part in a Degree Apprenticeship you require agreement from your employer, or in some instances you will be applying for a new job with an apprenticeship as part of that employment. The first step in the application process is the University receiving an employer application form, indicating that they are willing to support you throughout the programme at the University.

If you would like further support with the discussion with your manager or employer about apprenticeships or your wider training and development, please contact our Sales and Business Development team by email at [email protected] or complete the form on the website to request a call back.

If you have a question relating to an apprenticeship programme or you would like to talk further about how apprenticeships at Northumbria University work, call 0191 227 3251.
