POWERPATH INSTALLATION IN WINDOWS
This document explains the install and management of EMC multipathing software “POWERPATH”. The following things are the Pre-requisutes to install the software on a Windwos 2008 R2 machine.
1. Administrator rights on the server.2. Powerlink Login ID.3. License for Powerpath windows version.
Download latest EMC Powerpath software from http://powerlink.emc.com . The latest version for windows is PowerPath 5.5 SP1 as shown below.
Copy to the server and execute the file as shown below.

The server require a reboot to save the configuration changes.
Check the Programs menu to find PowerPath installation as shown below. A icon will be displayed on the taskbar which indicates the PowerPath monitor. This is the program which monitors all the available path that are going from host to storage device.
Open PowerPath administration window and following screen can be viewed.

SP A2-A5 and SP B2-B5 are the storage ports which can be reached by the host. Each storage power is showing 2 path . These paths are the disks . Since there are 2 disks, 2 paths are displayed.
Each disk can be managed by any storage controller, which means each disk should have 8 paths which leads to 8 controllers from SP A2-A5 and SP B2-B5.

We have a dual channel HBA port on the server. Each port is zoned to one different fabric . This makes the each HBA can reach each disk in 4 different paths. The above picture displays 4 paths for each disks which gives a total of 8 paths. If we add one more disk, this path count will raise to 12 paths.
The below picture shows the CLI access of PowerPath.

Now we will check the functionality of the Powerpath by simulating a port failure on the Fabric. The fabric I am using here is a CISCO MDS. The below figure shown the disabling of a port on the Fabric switch. This port is connected to one of the HBA on the host.

The PowerPath monitor identifies the path failure as show below. You can notice a “/” and “X” mark on few HBAs and Disks. The “/” one of the path is failed and host is still able to access the disks. Sign “X” indicates complete failure of the device. In our scenario path from PORT4 are completely failed which results in failure of SP A2,A4,B3,B5 . From this we can understand the zone is created between PORT4 and all the failed ports. On the right side we can notice all paths are “Dead, and Status as “Failed”.

If we select the other HBA PORT3, we can still notice all the paths are active. All the I/O requests will be performed from PORT3 which will be taken care by PowerPath .
It was been told as PowerPath is a high selling software since this is independent of storage array. It supports different Operating Systems and even different storage array which are Non-EMC. Below PDF file gives you the Install and Admin guide on Windows for PowerPath 5.5 SP1.
