Comparing End Suction And Double Suction
Centrifugal Pumps
What Is An End Suction Centrifugal Pump ? A centrifugal pump with a casing wherein you find suction at one end and discharge on the
other is called an end suction centrifugal pump. They are normally single stage pumps having
only one impeller. These type of pumps are easily available in the market at reasonable prices.
Hence end suction pumps are the most commonly found centrifugal pumps with least expensive
configuration.
You can find a wide assortment in terms of sizes and designs and even various options in
materials of construction to choose from. End suction pump manufacturers offer designs that
can handle water at ambient temperature and high pressure. When you are searching for
reputed manufacturers of end suction pumps, make sure that the pumps they offer can handle
viscous liquids like oils at high temperatures, abrasive slurries and other chemicals that are
corrosive in nature.
How Do These End Suction Pumps Work ? End suction centrifugal pumps usually contain an impeller and a volute type casing. The vanes
of the impeller help to raise the velocity of the pumped liquid moving inside. From there the
liquid flows into the volute casing. At this point, the high velocity of the fluid is converted to high
pressure. This happens through a process of diffusion.
End suction are typically driven by an A.C. electric engine, however, there are D.C.
Motor/engine driven ones available in the market. In addition to that, you can also find the ones
driven by air engines, steam turbines, pressure/hydraulic motors, and diesel motors.
Double Suction Centrifugal Pumps
These split case pumps are the second most popular centrifugal pumps after end suction
pumps which have a radial split design. So how are double suction pumps different from
endsuction pumps and what are the principal reasons for their popularity ?
1. One can remove the rotor of the pump without disturbing the suction by just taking off the
upper half of the casing.
2. Shaft deflection is less as compared to the endsuction pumps.
3. The net positive suction head in double suction pumps is lower than that of end suction
pumps because of the fact that each impeller eye has to only handle half of the total flow
rate of the pump.
4. Due to the backtoback design, there is virtually no axial hydraulic thrust.
5. They are more efficient because no power is lost in balancing the hydraulic.
6. Although a lot of advantages have been mentioned, double suction pumps still have
some drawbacks which include:
a. These pumps are more heavier than end suction pumps and they also cost more
when used for high pressure applications.
b. Doublesuction pumps are normally more sensitive to the geometry and
orientation of elbows in front of the pump inlet.
c. They need need two shaft seals, whereas end suction pumps require only one
seal assembly. This in turn increases the maintenance cost of a doublesuction
pump.
Types Of End Suction Centrifugal Pumps Available In The Market
End suction pumps are helpful in numerous sorts of private, business, and mechanical
applications. Because of their popularity and easy availability from such a large number of pump
suppliers, they are frequently available at extremely reasonable costs. End suction pumps can be either:
1. closecoupled wherein with the pump impeller is appended directly to the drive shaft.
There is absolutely no different coupling between them. They are either flanged or
threaded.
2. or frame mounted, wherein the pump has its own arrangement of bearings with a
coupling that separates the pump and the engine.
Standard end suction pumps which are close coupled are made of iron and various other
plastics for low cost. If you are looking for a heavy duty pump for your industrial demands, you
can opt for frame mounted pumps available in stainless steel and more exotic alloys so as to
offer corrosion resistance. Applications like mining and mineral processing would require frame
mounted end suction pumps.
Where are End Suction Pumps used ?
End suction centrifugal pumps play the most vital role in the following applications:
● Drainage
● Irrigation
● HVAC
● Water supply
● Sugar Industries
● Booster service
● Sprinkler systems
● Fire fighting
● Industrial pressure boosting
From the above comparison, we now know that the end suction pumps are engineered to last.
