UNIFORM BADGES
Parents, too many learners are wearing their school blazers/
shirts/dresses without the school badge on it.
The badge is there to identify GSPS, and even more important,
the learners should be proud of it.
You do not want your child to
be in a sloppy school.
GRADE 1 PARENTS: PLEASE TAKE NOTE
Learners are not allowed to come up to the classes in the morning to put their cases on
the hooks. They have to put their suit cases in the line where they line up in the morn-
ings.
ALL PARENTS: PLEASE TAKE NOTE:
Parents cannot come up to the classrooms to wait outside in the passages for the
learners. Please wait outside the after care gates for your children.

CRICKET
U11 Cricket vs SACS “C” on 5 February 2014. We played the South African College School (SACS) on
Tuesday 5 February and won the match by 10 runs. SACS won the toss and sent Groote Schuur in to bat.
We managed 53 runs. Top scorer was Extras with 27 followed by Mihlali Mongo with 9 runs. Mihlali
also hit the only 4 of the innings. Second highest score was Matthew Bruiners with 8. SACS batted sec-
ond and at one stage were on 25 for 2 wickets. Then they lost 8 wickets for just 13 runs thanks to THREE
great run outs. In other words the fielding was fantastic! SACS ended on 43 all out. Tristan Arends took 2
wickets for 3 runs in 4 overs – brilliant. Yaeesh Jacobs took 2 wickets for 5 runs in 3 overs also fantastic.
Other wicket takers were Seamus Tait, Matthew van Breda and Nicholas Stober with 1 wicket each. The
boys were well dressed and well behaved.
U/12. On Tuesday the 28/01/14 the U12 cricket boys played against The Grove. Our first game of the
season would always be a rusty one. We lost the toss and were put into bat. The opposition looked rusty
as well, so we had a target to reach as a total. We lost some early wickets, but gathered our composure
with Sazisi Joyi stabilizing the Innings with a well played 18. Our total of 58 was defendable. At the half
time, we came together and focused on our fielding and bowling, stating that anything wide on a narrow
pitch would be a wide. Unfortunately, this was the case with 28 extras giving to the opposition. In a low
total, this needs to be nipped in the bud for future matches. Sazisi and Gino took a wicket a piece. We are
starting at a new beginning and we can only get better.
U/12. On Tuesday 4/02/14 the U12’s played against SACS at home. It was to be a fantastic game of
cricket. We lost the toss and were made to field. We started off with a bang, taking 4 wickets for just 24
runs. With great bowling and good fielding by our players, we managed to bowl SACS out for 68. Great
bowling by Gino (2/18 in 4 overs), Luke (3/15 in 4.4 overs), Christian (2/6 in 4 overs) and Shami picking
up 1/ 9 in 4 overs. In the second half of the match, we started off poorly. The large focus of what needs
to be done in practice is our batting. We were 24/4 after 6 overs. It looked like we had it in the bag with
Luke batting well scoring 39* in the end, but unfortunately we lost wickets throughout our innings and
certain victory turn into a throw away loss. The improvements are showing and the boys must keep their
heads up high at the commitment they are showing. We were bowled out for 65, losing by 3 runs. Thank
you to the parents who came to support. They were treated to a fantastic game of cricket.
U13: We played against Bishops on Thursday 6 February at home.
We won the toss and decided to field first. Bishops scored 56 in their allotted 20 overs.
The boys had some excellent, disciplined spells of bowling and restricted Bishops to the above score for 6
wickets. There were only 7 extras. The bowling: (Overs - maidens - runs - wkts. )
Rihaz - 4- 1 - 10 – 3, Mika-eel - 4 - 1 - 14 - 0; Mikhail - 3 - 1 - 4 - 1; Cole - 3 - 1 - 8 - 0; Junaid 2 - 0 - 3 -
0 Fawaz - 3 - 1 - 6 – 2, Liyabona - 1 - 0 - 11 - 0
Liyabona took an excellent catch in the slips off the bowling of Rihaz (pretty fast) and it was a pity Super-
sport (HD) wasn't there to capture it! The fielding of the boys was just on another level!
We still need to work a bit more in the nets on our batting - and we are getting there. Our batting started
off well and we lost our first wicket on 17 (Fawaz). Mika-eel kept the ship steady and stayed there till the
winning runs were scored, and is therefore our man of the match also (29 n.o.). Well done Mika-eel! Some
quick runs by Liam towards the end allowed us to finish the game within the allotted overs and we won
the game! A fantastic team effort! Compliments to Rihaz for keeping the team together in such a well-
disciplined manner.
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
LEADERSHIP
ACTING SIMPLY
True leaders are hardly known to their followers.
Next after them are the leaders the people know and admire;
After them, those they fear; after them, those they despise.
To give no trust Is to get not trust.
When the work’s done right, With no fuss or boasting,
Ordinary people say, “Oh, we did it.”
(Lao-Tzu 6th Century BC)
I am frequently amazed at how many contemporary politicians refer to themselves as “leaders” by virtue of the
fact that they hold public office. Historically it is clear that public office holders are seldom the true leaders
causing change. For instance, who were the leaders of the Renaissance? Were they the public office holders?
Were the leaders the mayors, governors, and presidents of the European capitals? No indeed.
The leaders were the artists, writers and musicians who listened to their hearts and souls and expressed what
they heard, leading others to discover a resonating voice within themselves. Ultimately the entire world
listened with a new awareness that was responsible for the triumph of human dignity over tyranny. True
leaders are not really the officials who are addressed by a title.
Consider what titles you are known by and how you attempt to live up to them. You may carry the title of
mother or father, which is an awesome responsibility. When your advice is sought because the kids see you as
a leader in the family, keep in mind that what you truly want them to be able to say is “I did it myself,” rather
than give your credit. Seek to enhance your leadership qualities by being constantly alert to the mistake of
thinking that your title makes you a leader. True leaders are not known by titles. It is ego that love titles.
Helping others to become leaders while exercising your own true leadership qualities means having to work had
at suspending ego’s influence. True leaders enjoy the trust of others, which is very different from enjoying the
perks and flattery and power that ego insists are the signs of being a leader. You need to give trust to others in
order to receive that trust.
Notice the times that you are inclined to insist that others do it your way or take the highway. Lao-Tzu tells us
that the leader with this attitude is the least effective and most despised. Your leadership style may tend to
create fear with statements like, “I’ll punish you if you don’t do it my way.” Lao-Tzu tells us that fear-based
leaders are poorly qualified to genuinely lead. The leader whose motivation is to bask in admiration, according
to Lao-Tzu, is still not a master at leading.
A leader is best when people barely know he exists, when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say: we did it ourselves.—Lao Tzu
