Unite Here!Campaign to organize new members. Three posters were designed together with a set of flyers on different languages, featuring each a different worker that belonged to a specific sector of the union with a background of workers marching. A special business card that folds in half was designed for organizers, so they could hand out with dates of events and if needed write additional information.

Unite Here!Unite Here! was the first union in the US to endorse senator Obama when running for president. It was essential to present the union’s identity to the fullest, while campaigning for the candidate.The campaign revolved around an illustration of Obama blended with a high contrast photo of Unite Here! workers. The illustration was created instead of using a photograph, to highlight the pose and to give it a more striking and unconventional effect.

People from many nationalities belong to this union and so it was designed to fit the name in 13 different languages. Au cours de l’année écoulée, notre syndicat a recruté des employés demagasins Barney’s New York dans tout le pays, notamment à Washington,Houston, au Texas et Troy, dans le Michigan. Elle pos-sède également la chaîne de maga-sins de luxe Barneys New York, oùUNITE HERE représente près de1000 employés des magasins et descentres de distribution.

En octobre, UNITE HERE a con-clu une promesse de contrat avec legéant allemand de la mode HugoBoss, offrant un nouveau contrat àprès de quatre-vingt dix employésdans un centre de distribution de larégion de Savannah, en Georgie. Ilstravaillaient sans contrat depuisavril. sacre plus de 2 millions de dollars par an àl’achat d’uniformes et autres équipements et élé-ments textiles destinés aux soldats américains.La loi fédérale impose que ces vêtements soientfabriqués aux Etats-Unis. 5000 employés deUNITE HERE environ fabriquent différentestenues de combat et uniformes, tenues renfor-cées et gilets pare-balles, ainsi que des para-chutes dans des sociétés telles que AmericanApparel, Point Blank et Tama Manufacturing.

Ces employés bénéficient de salaires, d’uneassurance maladie et d’un plan de retraite dansle cadre de leur contrat syndical, mais il resteplus de 15 000 employés non syndiqués dans cesecteur qui travaillent souvent dans des condi-tions très difficiles.

Les employés d’une de ces sociétés, AmericanPower Source, située à Columbus, dans le Mis-sissippi, ont un salaire à peine supérieur ausalaire minimum, ne disposent pas d'un plan deretraite, ne peuvent pas se permettre de payerune assurance maladie, et doivent souvent s’ap-

UNITE HERE représente plus de cinq cents employés de Hugo Boss dans le cen-tre de distribution de Savannah et dans un centre de fabrication et de distributionde Cleveland, dans l’Ohio. Les employés de Hugo Boss à Cleveland ont défenduleurs collègues de Savannah qui n’avaient pas encore de contrat, prouvant que la so-lidarité n’est pas un vain mot. « Nous travaillons tous pour la même compagnie etnous méritons d’avoir les mêmes avantages », a déclaré Elba Rosario, employée dansune fabrique de pantalons.

Volunteering on the UNITE HERE Obama campaign has been one of the greatest experiences of my life. It was so satisfying seeing the differ-ence we were making in people’s lives, especially among the very old and the very young. We visited neighborhoods where no one had ever come to regis-ter voters. We worked so hard to edu-cate people on the impact voting would have on their communities. At fi rst they did not trust us, but over time, we won their trust and were welcomed in the neighborhoods with open arms. They were so grateful for registration and education efforts. Each day just made you feel great about the change we were helping to bring to our country.

Working on this campaign taught me the value of perseverance—the benefi t of going that extra mile. I now know that every goal is within our reach when we come together as we did to elect Barack Obama.

As political volunteers, members had to take a leave from work and, in the cases of Wisconsin and Virginia, travel far from home to form an army for change in Virginia, Nevada and Wisconsin. Not surprisingly, members lined up to an-swer the call and within short order, !!$ members signed up to make history.

VIRGINIA – REGISTER, EDUCATE AND TURNOUT

# e story of Virginia is one of

enfranchisement—bringing the vote to

those who felt le% be-hind. Our Virginia team felt steeped in history, as their state had ignited the Freedom Rides of the &'("s which chal-lenged the institutional racism that per-sisted in the South despite recent civil rights victories. “Coming to Virginia as a UNITE HERE political organizer gave me the opportunity to help complete the un) nished work started over forty years ago.” Ken Williams, Bell Captain and Head Steward, Double Tree Hotel, Chi-cago - Local &, Chicago, Illinois.

When it comes to presidential elec-tions, Virginia had voted Republican

since &'(*. How could we reverse this trend? Register new voters and educate them on exercising their voting rights. So on September $th, (* volunteers and UNITE HERE sta+ members arrived in Virginia ready to work throughout the state. With voter registration and educa-tion as our focus, UNITE HERE volun-teers acted as community organizers, talking with the general public about the changes voting could bring to their neighborhoods.# e volunteers faced and overcame

many challenges. “When we ) rst arrived in the neighborhoods, people did not trust us, but we did not give up. We con-tinued to visit the same neighborhoods and talk to the same people and eventu-ally communities grew to trust and wel-come us as ‘the people in the red shirts’ who had come to help them vote.” Tony Evans, Bartender and Shop Steward, Golden Gate Field, Local ,-$" Oakland, California.

Six days a week, our Virginia volun-teers visited neighborhoods previously excluded from the political process, in part, because our door-to-door regis-tration drive was the ) rst of its kind in many Virginian neighborhoods. Volun-teers regularly met and registered ) rst-time voters in their -"s and '"s.

In total, our Virginia team knocked on (",""" doors and registered over $,""" new voters. On election-day, ,!$

My grandfather was a slave, and yet he told me, when I was grow-ing up, that during my life time, we would elect a Black President. When I met Senator Barack Obama, I knew that my grandfather was right. But I also knew that it was going to take all of our dedication and energy to send him to the White House in 2008. When my union opened the volunteer political organizer Obama program, I signed up right away. I was surprised to fi nd out how many young people seemed not to care about voting, even for Obama. But over the course of two months, we got them fi red up and ready to go. And seeing these young men arrive at the polls on November 4th was truly satisfying – to know that we had made a difference and had ignit-ed a new generation of voters. I look forward to volunteering again.

Nevada

UNITE HERE members volunteered in three regions to get out the vote, producing a dramatic increase in voter turnout and an Obama win with !"# of the vote.

In addition, our Danville team played an instrumental role in the Democratic victory of the hotly con-tested Congressional race in Virginia’s !th District –helping Tom Perriello un-seat a $%-year Republican incumbent by &%! votes.

NEVADA – MEMBER TO MEMBER CAMPAIGN

In Nevada, UNITE HERE’s Obama campaign ef-

forts jumped into high gear during the primary

season, when Local ''( members ac-tively campaigned for Obama during the caucus and registered new vot-ers throughout '))& and '))*. Dur-ing the general election, Team Nevada had *) full-time member volunteers on the streets and ") member volunteers at worksites, talking to union mem-

bers and their families about bringing change to Washington.

To win in Nevada, our UNITE HERE team developed a three-prong approach: ($) help naturalize immi-grant union members and register them before the '))* general election (') persuade the $$),))) Change To Win union members in Nevada to sup-port Obama, and (") encourage early voting to maximize voter turnout.

Our Nevada volunteers worked six days a week during most of the cam-paign and every day during the two week early voting period—talking with members about the issues, recruiting them to volunteer and encouraging them to vote early. Our political orga-nizers faced apathy and fatigue among voters overwhelmed by the wake of massive foreclosures and economic hardship.

“Las Vegas has been ground zero for our country’s economic meltdown—so many people are struggling just to keep their homes. Obama showed a sincere concern and commitment to revers-ing this trend. Unite Here!Photos of members campaigning for Obama were used throughout the magazine to accentuate the cheerful spirit of the victory, and to recognize the effort of the members in the events.The headers, page numbering and typography were redesigned to modernize the publication. Cartoons were used to present the information in a more informal and entertaining way and to invite younger members to read it.The content was divided by a description of the campaign on each state and an illustration was used as a marker of each section.The magazine was designed in two different languages.
