SIMPLE PAST We use the Simple Past to talk about

actions that happened in the past.

Positive: Subject + simple past form of verb

Negative: Subject + didn’t + base form of verb

Didn’t = did not

The Regular Simple Past Verbs end in –ed.

Check the SPELLING in the Grammar Focus Box

For most verbs we add –ed

For verbs ending with –e, add –d

For verbs ending with a consonant + y, replace the y by i and add –ed

For most verbs ending with C+V+C, double the last consonant and add –ed.

SIMPLE PAST – IRREGULAR VERBS

The Irregular Past Simple Verbs DON’T end with –ed.

The Irregular Verbs have na irregular form to their past tense.

We ONLY use the past form of verbs (regular or irregular) in AFFIRMATIVES.
