E. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards

G5.4.2 Identify spatial patterns on a map of Nevada, i.e., deserts, mountains, population.

o Student-Friendly Standards I can find different patterns on maps.

F. Vocabulary Geography – is the study of our world and our place in it. It describes the land,

water, and living things that surround us. (p. 4)

Hemisphere – is one half of Earth’s surface. Two lines divide Earth into hemisphere. The equator divides Earth into the Northern & Southern hemispheres. The prime meridian divides Earth into Eastern and Western hemispheres. (p. 9)

Region - is an area that has certain features it might have certain landforms, such as mountains and glaciers. (p. 4)

Environment – includes all the surroundings and conditions that affect living things. Water, land, plants, animals, and weather are all part of an environment. (p. 6)

G. Procedure: 1. Engage the students by asking

Background Information (p. 4)

2. Talk about it! Define Geography as a class. (p. 7)

3. As a class read aloud through pages 6-ll making sure of pause on any salient points. As we are reading students must write the 4 vocab words and definitions in their notebooks.

4. Have students give their attention to the projector as you show them around google earth. Begin with Las Vegas and slowly zoom out pointing out interesting things you find. Now look at Nevada, then do the same with the USA, and zoom all the way out until you are able to see the earth as a whole.

5. Identify which region we are located in and the hemisphere as well. Nevada State College EDEL 453 - Spring 2014 Karen Powell- Instructor page 3

6. ASK ***(Tell students we will learn a new

way to remember the continents soon)***

H. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding?

Students will be given a “ticket out the door”. On it will have one question from the teacher, and students will be required to write 2 facts that they learned. These can be any facts; there will be no wrong answer.

Copy & Paste onto Word Doc and make copies for class. (2 on a page) Cut page in half.

Name:________________________________ Date:______________________

What environmental feature is most seen in the region we live in? (Clue: Nevada)_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

What are 2 things that you learned?

1.

2.

Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. I will use this informal form of assessment to see if students understood the salient points and to see what they learned. I will use this to judge whether or not I need to cover a topic again. My question goes over 2 vocabulary words as well as asks them to identify any patterns they might find in Nevada.

I. Closure: Students will have completed the ticket out the door and the teacher will pick one

randomly and read out the two things that student learned. I will be doing this to make sure students understand that I want serious answers to the questions. Students won’t get many points for this assessment perhaps only 5 points will be given.

J. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach?

I think going over the vocabulary will be easy because it is to the point; there is really only one way to do it.

2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? The assessment will be the most challenging for me. I have never given an assessment and I would wonder if I am doing it correctly, or if my assessment is challenging enough.

3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? This lesson can be extended with a short “Geography in Daily Life Activity” depending on the level of the student or the class; there are 5 different activities to choose from. This activity will also teach my students the importance of maps and how to use them.

4. What can you do for students who don’t grasp the concepts?Having the students read aloud and think aloud will help those who don’t learn well through text, and the google earth activity is engaging and will have everyone participating. Visuals will also be used to ensure comprehension of vocabulary, repetition as well.

5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change?I am not sure if this lesson is engaging enough for the students, I would want to assume they will grasp everything and be interested but I feel that with me lecturing, I might lose some of them. This is why I want to incorporate the thinking aloud as we read and the google earth.

6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? The most difficult part was looking at the teacher’s edition of a book; this is my first time seeing one. (Besides the times I used to peak at my teachers book in class when I was little) There is a lot of information and tips to be found, however it can be quite distracting if you aren’t sure of where to look. This is

something that I would like to work on. But overall, the book did help me get some great ideas.
