For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

John 3:16 JKV

“We must learn to live together as brothers and sisters in Christ or perish together as fools; but when we lose the right to be different

we lose the privilege to be free.”

One Race, One Blood

“History shows us that the first humans, Adam and Eve, gave birth to the human race in the continent of Africa. Sin entered the world when Adam ate the forbidden fruit and his descendants grew to be very wicked. “And the LORD said, ‘My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.”

GENESIS 6:3 NKJV

God saw the evil in the hearts of Adam’s descendants and was going to destroy the world with a great flood. But because Noah loved God, He told him to build an ark to save his family. The Earth was destroyed and only Noah, his wife, their three sons, and their wives were spared. Noah’s descendants eventually repopulated the entire Earth. Every person today came from those eight. We are all one race, the human race!

GENESIS CHAPTER 9-11

After many generations, Noah’s descendants wanted to make a name for themselves and began to build a tower to reach the heavens. God grew furious and scattered the human race over the Earth to Europe, Asia, North and South America and Australia. As a result of this diaspora, a multitude of nationalities, cultures, and languages developed.

Today, many nationalities and cultures make up our nation, the United States of America. If we of this great nation can put aside our differences and work together, we will be able to overcome any obstacle and meet any challenge. Only then can we finally unite and spread peace and prosperity throughout the world as one race, the HUMAN RACE. Let us start with displaying our logo of “United, We Make America” to show people our strength and unity.

And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. John 8:32 KJV

WE ARE ALL A PIECE OF THE PUZZLE

A Story Of Faith[Prompted] by faith, Noah, being forewarned by God concerning events of which as yet there was no visible sign, took heed and diligently and reverently constructed and prepared an ark for the deliverance of his own family. By this [his faith which relied on God] he passed judgment and sentence on the world’s unbelief and became an heir and possessor of righteousness (that relation of being right into which God puts the person has faith).

OUR HISTORY

Founded by Walter L. Mathis Sr. and his wife Patricia E. Mathis, Operation Resources, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit organization founded in 1993. Our founders had a vision of contributing to the community; this vision gave birth to a scholarship fund that has awarded over $60,000 in scholarships to students across Michigan. Our focus on providing information in the fields of education, health, finance, real estate, and religion keeps the vision alive today—and for the future—of providing more scholarships to underprivileged and needy students.

OUR MISSION

We envision Operation Resources, Inc. to be a driving force for the community to achieve thier goals through a well-rounded education. We believe that all the people of the United States, including Black Americans, must come together to build strength as a nation and to work towards logical and fair solutions to our nation’s problems. This can only happen when the children of this nation are properly educated. But our society does not allow every child that chance. Operation Resources, Inc. wants to correct this problem.

OUR GOAL

We hope to encourage businesses and agencies to donate and invest their paid advertising dollars with Operation Resources, Inc. We see a world where Blacks, Whites, Latinos, Asians, and Arabs all have the same opportunities regardless of their nationality. In order to create equality we must offer educational and economic empowerment to those without the proper opportunities. And so our goal is that every reader will have the opportunity to gain the education they need, so that no one, regardless of nationality, sex, age, or class, will be left without a chance to live up to their potential.

REMEMBER

Not all people of your nationality or culture are your friends, and not all people of other nationalities or cultures are your enemies; but we must learn to live together as brothers and sisters in Christ, or perish together as fools.

Operation Resources, Inc. publishes Unity Magazine 6 times a year. The registered publisher is Patricia E. Mathis. This publication is guided by the constitutional principle of free press and is open to contributions from anyone regardless of nationality, gender, or religion.

Winning Spirit of LeadershipEvery morning in Africa a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning a lion wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death. It doesn’t matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle; when the sun comes up, you’d better be running.

CELEBRATING EASTER

6 UNITY MAGAZINE www.OperationResources.org

Easter is the holiday that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ and dates all the way back to the very beginning

of Christianity. Easter represent new life and the rebirth of Christ which took place the third day after he was crucified. There are several symbols that are associated with Easter but why are these particular symbols used for this holiday?

The main traditional symbols associated with Easter are rabbits and eggs. Children look forward to painting eggs all kinds of exciting colors and then spending the evening hunting for them. It is fun for the whole family. Eggs symbolize the tomb from which Christ emerged and the hatching of the baby chick is the symbol of new life being born. This is why they were chosen has symbols for Easter.

Why is the rabbit a common Easter symbol? The rabbit was appropriately associated with Easter because the hare represents fertility. It is considered a symbol of rebirth and new life. There are two stories that tell how rabbits became associated with Easter.

One account states that when the Germans settled in America they brought with them a tradition in which a rabbit would visit homes the night before Easter and leave brightly colored eggs for the children that lived there. This bunny’s name was "Oschter Haws". The second account states that Eastre, who was also referred to as Ostara, was the Anglo-Saxon Teutonic Goddess of both springtime and fertility. She was usually seen escorted by a rabbit.

The while blossoms of Easter Lilies rise up in the spring and symbolizes the purity of Jesus. The cross is the symbol of the victory Jesus had over death and the lamb rightfully represents the "Lamb of God". On that Palm Sunday when Jesus first arrived in Jerusalem palm branches were waved by the people to welcome him therefore, palm branches is a symbol of Easter.

The Butterfly was chosen as an Easter symbol because of its unique life cycle. It begins as a caterpillar that stands for the time Jesus spent on earth. The

cocoon stage is next which represent the crucifixion of Christ and his burial. In the last stage it emerges from the cocoon as a beautiful butterfly which symbolizes his resurrection in a new glorified body.

As you can see these symbols were not randomly chosen, they all have a specific meaning that is associated

with new life and rebirth.

Easter is not a holiday celebrated only by Christians, however. There are other religions that celebrate Easter and even non-religious people can share in the mainstream festivities, tales of the Easter Bunny, candy and colored eggs. Whatever your personal beliefs, we hope you have a very Happy Easter!

EASTER SYMBOLS: WHY WERE THEY CHOSEN TO REPRESENT EASTER?BY LISA MASON

UNITY MAGAZINE 7 www.OperationResources.org

e all have our own idea of what the perfect mother should be, whether she be the archetypical mother

who bakes cakes and tends to our damaged knees or the dynamic career woman who juggles many different roles whilst still finding time for her children. Mother’s Day can be a time for reflection; reflecting on the relationship we have/had with our own mother and also on the role that mother has played within our own family.

Let’s put the greetings cards and pot plants to one side and consider the importance of Mother’s Day.

When children are born it is not uncommon for new parents to say that they will treat their children better, differently than they were treated. They won’t make the same mistakes, they’ll be a better parent. The truth is, many people echo those sentiments, but times have changed. Opportunities and attitudes are different from when our Mothers were young. Be understanding and appreciate that your mother did the best she could within her situation at that time, she raised you to be the person you are today.

Mothers value their children being thoughtful rather than spending their hard-earned cash on token gifts. Phoning her, baking a cake, spending time together is likely to be appreciated more than a pricey, impersonal bottle of perfume. She will value that you made time for her, thought about her, want to see her.

If your children forget about Mother’s Day allow them some latitude. Children are often well-intentioned but become easily distracted and pre-occupied with their own interests. Try not to be hurt and remember it’s just one day. You could always arrange

to celebrate Mother’s Day at another more convenient time.

Take control and make the day special by planning it yourself in advance. That way you ensure that the people you love are there to celebrate with you. By being the one who organises it you are more likely to get the day you want.

Estrangement occurs in families, the reasons often long forgotten but the rift remains. Why not use Mother’s Day as an opportunity to heal a problem situation? It could be a good time to reach out and let your mother know that you’re thinking of her. By simply contacting her and saying hello it might be enough of a gesture to reconcile. Her pride may have meant that she was waiting for you to make the first move.

In-law and new partner situations can be problematic. Being polite and respectful may be difficult, but will win you brownie points, enhance your reputation in the family and ease a difficult situation.

Remember how frequently you have to see these people. If they are a relatively minor part of your life it may be worth avoiding confrontation and ignoring any rudeness or slights. Retaliation can leave you cast in the role of aggressor. Just ignore their behaviour and spend time with the more pleasant family members.

Don’t forget that this is also a time to celebrate the important mother figures who may have played an important role in our lives. Grandmother’s, step-mothers, mothers-in-law, foster mothers are an important part of many families and make a valuable contribution to children’s lives.

THE IMPORTANCE OF MOTHER’S DAY BY SUSAN LEIGH

W

Page 8: Unity April/May

n the hustle and bustle of life, Mother's Day is a time to pay tribute to our mother and show her just how much

we appreciate everything she's done, and continues to do for us. It's a very special day in the calendar for a very special person. But do you know the history of Mother's Day? The following article is a quick look at how Mother's Day in the United States officially came to be.

The Mother of all GoddessesMother's Day has its origins in ancient Greek and Roman festivals dedicated to maternal goddesses. The Greeks honored Rhea, the mother of the gods and goddesses in Greek mythology, while the Romans' Hilaria spring festival was dedicated to Cybele another mother goddess.

Mothering SundayA more modern version of Mother's Day began in the 1600s in England, with Mothering Sunday which was celebrated on the 4th Sunday of Lent (exactly three weeks before Easter Sunday). As early as 10 years of age, children started working as servants, and living in servants' quarters on their wealthy employer's grounds. Because children were often miles from their parents, Mothering Sunday became a cherished day where servants were permitted to return home to their mothers for the day, making it one of happiness and celebration.

A Day of PeaceIn 1872 in the US, Julia Ward Howe, famous for writing the words to the Battle Hymn of the Republic during the Civil War, began promoting Mother's Day as one dedicated to peace. In 1872, the holiday was just an idea being promoted, but by 1873 women in 18 US

cities held Mother's Day for Peace celebrations. While the number of celebrations dwindled from year to year, it held on for another three decades. In fact, Boston continued the annual celebration for ten consecutive years. Yet, for one reason or another, the celebrations ceased. (Can we get a 'tisk 'tisk).

Declaring a HolidayDuring the second week in May of 1905, Anna Jarvis from Philadelphia was mourning the loss of her mother, Ann Marie Reeves Jarvis. During the Civil War, her mother organized women with the goal of working to improve sanitation conditions for both Union and Confederate soldiers on days called Mother's Work Days. Her mother was an inspiration to Anna and in 1907 she held a memorial and campaigned to establish a national Mother's Day.

Anna Jarvis and her supporters then wrote to ministers, businessmen, and politicians promoting their campaign in an endeavor to establish a national holiday and on

May 14, 1914 President Woodrow Wilson signed the Mother's Day Proclamation. The second Sunday in May was officially declared Mother's Day in the United States, and an International Mother's Day Shrine was erected in Grafton, West Virginia, the childhood hometown of Anna Jarvis, to commemorate her achievement.

An International CelebrationMother's Day is celebrated around the world at different times during the year. However, some countries including Denmark, Finland, Italy, and Australia also celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday in May.

Regardless of the actual date Mother's Day is celebrated, it's an important day in the calendar and one on which we can give thanks to that very special person in our life: our mom.

PASTOR’S PERSPECTIVE

When you think of spring, you look at the earth putting on new “clothes” and a new

outlook as the sun shines in our windows!

Easter is all about the Resurrection of Jesus — new life — for those who seek Him and a joyful time for those of us who serve the risen Savior.

Just as spring awakes the trees, grass and flowers, so should we be refreshed as we look forward to a soon and coming King.

I think of Mary, Jesus’ earthly mother and her excitement at the impeding birth of her Savior. Luke 1:39; 46-47.

I think of all Moms, and how appropriate it is for us to honor them. It is the commandment with a promise. Exodus 20:12 and Ephesians 6:1-4.

Psalm 127:3 says … “Children are a heritage from the Lord…” Children are a blessing. Read verses 4 and 5 also.

Proverbs 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he (she) should go and when they grow old, they will not depart from it.”

Jesus was born in Bethlehem (Luke 2:4), moved to Egypt (Matthew 2:13) and then to Nazareth (Matthew 2: 21-22). When Jesus was twelve years old, He and His parents went to Jerusalem for the Feast of Passover. When you read of the boy Jesus and his parents in Luke 2:41-52, you see the respect Jesus had for His earthy parents.

As we honor our Mom on Mother’s Day (And Dad on Father’s Day) we see an example of how much influence

parents have on young children. Jesus is our example of respect to His earthy parents and to his Heavenly Father!

Without His obedience to His Father, Matthew 26:39 and 42 we would not experience “new life”. Please read 2 Corinthians 5:17. It says we are a “new” creation.

New or renew! Commit your life to Jesus. You will never be the same again. Simply say, “Jesus, I give my life to You, forgive me and all of my sins. I believe You died, were buried and rose again just so I could be a “new” creation. Thank you for what You did for me. In Jesus name. Amen”

Just as Jesus took care of His mom, John 19: 26-27, let’s wish our Moms a day of peace, joy and rest. Love your Mom, Jesus did!

Thomas Jefferson was a very remarkable man who started learning very early in life and never stopped.

At 5, began studying under his cousin’s tutor.

At 9, studied Latin, Greek and French.

At 14, studied classical literature and additional languages.

At 16, entered the College of William and Mary.

At 19, studied Law for 5 years starting under George Wythe.

At 23, started his own law practice.

At 25, was elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses.

At 31, wrote the widely circulated “Summary View of the Rights of British America and retired from his law practice.

At 32, was a Delegate to the Second Continental Congress.

At 33, wrote the Declaration of Independence.

At 33, took three years to revise Virginia’s legal code and wrote a Public Education bill and a statute for Religious Freedom.

At 36, was elected the second Governor of Virginia , succeeding Patrick Henry.

At 40, served in Congress for two years.

At 41, was the American minister to France, and negotiated commercial treaties with European nations along with Ben Franklin and John Adams.

At 46, served as the first Secretary of State under George Washington.

At 53, served as Vice President and was elected president of the American Philosophical Society.

At 55, drafted the Kentucky Resolutions, and became the active head of Republican Party.

At 57, was elected the third president of the United States.

At 60, obtained the Louisiana Purchase, doubling the nation’s size.

At 61, was elected to a second term as President.

At 65, retired to Monticello.

At 80, helped President Monroe shape the Monroe Doctrine.

At 81, almost single-handedly created the University of Virginia, and served as its first president.

At 83, died on the 50th anniversary of the Signing of the Declaration of Independence, along with John Adams.

Thomas Jefferson had great understanding because he himself studied the previous failed attempts at government. He understood actual history, the nature of God, his laws and the nature of man. That happens to be way more than what most understand today. Jefferson really knew his stuff. A voice from the past to lead us in the future:

John F. Kennedy held a dinner in the white House for a group of the brightest minds in the nation at that time. He made this statement: “This is perhaps the assembly of the most intelligence ever to gather at one time in the White House, with the exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone.”

“I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies.

If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property – until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.”

NEWS YOU CAN USE

12 UNITY MAGAZINE www.OperationResources.org

You cannot stop what seem like constant increases in the price of gasoline, but you can take several

common-sense steps to squeeze more miles out of a gallon.

“Although today’s vehicles are engineered with fuel-saving technologies, it still takes maintenance to ensure your vehicle performs as efficiently as it did when it left the factory,” said Roger Clark, General Motors Energy Center senior manager. “Drivers can improve their own fuel economy by making some very minor behavior changes.”

Here are a dozen tips for fuel savings from Chevrolet Certified Service:

1. Tune Up: A properly tuned engine can improve fuel economy about 4 percent, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Fixing a serious issue—such as a faulty oxygen sensor—can boost mileage up to 40 percent, so don’t ignore a service-engine-soon light.

2. Pump Up: Properly inflated tires improve gas mileage by up to 3.3 percent. Underinflated tires can lower fuel economy by 0.3 percent for every one pound-per-square-inch drop in the pressure of all four tires. Do not rely solely on the tire pressureÐmonitoring system to detect an underinflated tire—it’s best to check tires with a good gauge once a month and check your owner’s manual for more information.

3. Unpack: Carrying unneeded cargo makes your vehicle work harder and use more gas. The EPA says an extra 100 pounds reduces fuel economy up to 2 percent—even more in smaller vehicles. A loaded roof rack cuts fuel economy by up to 5 percent because a quarter of each gallon of gas goes toward overcoming wind resistance.

4. Slow Down: While each vehicle reaches its optimal fuel economy at a different speed (or range of speeds), gas mileage usually decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 mph, according to the EPA. Every 5 mph over 60 mph is like paying an additional 24 cents per gallon for gas.

5. Avoid Idling: A car gets 0 mpg when the engine is idling: While it does take a small amount of fuel to restart a vehicle, 15 minutes in the drive-through can burn through a quarter of a gallon of fuel.

6. Chill Out: Speeding, rapid acceleration and braking can lower gas mileage by 33 percent on the highway and 5 percent in city driving.

7. Put it in Overdrive: Using an overdrive gear on the highway reduces engine speed, saving both fuel and engine wear.

8. Roll ‘Em Down Around Town: Air conditioning reduces fuel efficiency by up to 10 percent. Avoid using the air conditioner by rolling down the windows at speeds below 40 mph. At speeds above 45 mph, wind drag uses more fuel than running the A/C.

9. Unclog: It’s hard to run if you can’t breathe. Older cars without fuel injection and computer-controlled technology can lose 14 percent of their fuel economy because of a dirt-clogged air filter. In modern cars, replacing a dirty or clogged air filter improves acceleration performance.

10. Use the Right Oil: Because oil reduces engine friction and friction makes an engine work harder, using the manufacturer’s recommended grade of oil improves fuel economy by 1 percent to 2 percent.

11. Plan Your Trips: Taking your kids to soccer or swim classes? Grocery shopping? Combining trips saves fuel and time.

12. Cap Check: Loose or poorly fitting gas caps not only can trigger the “check engine” light, they send 147 million gallons of gasoline into the air as vapor every year, according to the Discovery Channel. A missing or poorly fitting cap can reduce fuel economy by 1 percent to 2 percent.

Did you know your family has billions of dollars

invested in Wall Street?

BBllaacckkCCoonnssuummeerrAAccttiioonn ..ccoommUsing Our Dollars In Ways That Make Sense®

A Project of The Black Consumer Education Fund

There are ways to “invest” in a company besides owning stock. Every day, Black consumers invest hundreds of millions of dollars with Corporate America. Your investment comes from buying products like food, clothing, cars and cellular phones.

Yes, you get a product for the money you spend, but what do you get for your loyalty as a consumer? Does that company provide jobs in your community? Do they give contracts to business owners that look like you? Does that firm support the publications and radio stations you rely on for information?

Now you can find out what the companies you buy from are doing with your money. How are they investing in us and our community? Which companies give back the most to your community to create opportunities?

Learn how you can come together with thousands of Black consumers to bring about change. Become better informed about how to spend your money, and what you should expect in return for your loyalty. See how you can get more respect and more results for you and your community. It’s time to let your investment as a consumer make a difference. Visit our Website to learn more.
