Helping Your Student Succeed in the ClassroomThe University of Louisiana at Lafayette offers over 100 undergraduate degree programs and specialized concentrations. Faculty and staff on our campus are committed to ensuring your student is successful academically. While your student’s academic journey is their own, you can support them by knowing about the various support resources on our campus that help students academically.

University Colleges & Academic AdvisingThe University has eight academic colleges from which to choose a major. Every student is assigned an academic advisor. It is the advisor’s responsibility to assist the student in course selection each semester. Students may obtain the name and contact information for their academic advisor through their ULink Student Portal account. Students are required to meet with their academic advisor before scheduling classes each semester.

Faculty The faculty is committed to your child’s success. One of the greatest tips you can provide your student is to encourage them to visit with their faculty members outside of class. Students are often hesitant to interact with faculty members, and don’t realize how valuable faculty are in assisting them in their courses.

Office of the First Year ExperienceDr. Jennifer Faust, DirectorLee Hall 106(337) 482-6599firstyear.louisiana.edu

Effective fall 2015, UNIV 100 will be a first-year seminar focused on an academic topic chosen by the instructor(s). The course will be problem-based (or project-based, as appropriate to the discipline or interdisciplinary topic chosen) and will engage students in meaningful inquiry and activities that develop core cognitive skills such as critical thinking, information literacy, and oral and written communication skills. The course will also focus on the non-cognitive skills listed above, which are necessary for success at the college level.

UNIV 100 has two “segments”: Cajun Connection, which is a three-day extended introduction to UL Lafayette, to the campus community, and to University-level work and the First-Year Seminar, which then continues for ten weeks. Once students complete their project for UNIV 100, they are finished with the course (leaving the final six weeks of the semester for them to focus on their final exams and projects in all of their other courses). So, UNIV 100 is both an early start and an early finish course!

A message from the director, Joey Sturm:

The office of Public Safety is responsible for providing the highest quality of safety and security services through the coordinated efforts of the Police Department, Emergency Management and Emergency Operations, Parking Enforcement, Physical Security Systems (Cameras, Access Control, Emergency Call Boxes, and Emergency Notification System), Environmental Health and Safety, Risk Management, and Hazardous Materials.

The focus of the Office of Public Safety is to respond to short-term concerns while developing long-range strategies consistent with academic and University public safety priorities.

Police Departmentpolice.louisiana.edu

The UL Lafayette Police Department ((337) 482-6447) maintains a close working relationship with other area law enforcement agencies, other criminal justice components, and all University administrative departments. The UP is located at the center of campus and our officers maintain a 24-hour patrol coverage. They respond to crimes, illnesses, fires, service calls, traffic accidents, and other emergencies.

Clery Compliancepolice.louisiana.edu/jeanne-clery-actThe UL Police Department is dedicated to maintaining a safe and secure environment for learning and working. Because ULPD, like many urban campuses, does experience some crime, the UL Police Department wants students, faculty, and staff to be aware of crime on campus. The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus

Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, is a federal law that requires colleges and universities to disclose annual information about campus crime.

Campus Emergency Notification

SystemAll students are registered with the university’s Emergency Notification System (ENS). This system will alert students, faculty, and staff of steps to take in case of a major campus emergency. Students are encouraged to keep their information up-to-date by logging into ULink (portal.louisiana.edu) and updating their information on the students tab.

Q: “How many credit hours should my son or daughter schedule?”

A:A first-time freshman should schedule 12–15 hours in the first semester, which is a reasonable load for a good student. Whether or not the student must work should be considered in making this decision.

Note that if a student schedules fewer hours in any semester than are listed in his or her curriculum, she or he may not graduate at the end of eight semesters (four years) unless these hours are made up in another semester or summer session.

Q: “How important is class attendance?”

A:

One of the greatest indicators of academic success is class attendance. Coupled with an adequate study schedule, students who attend class do well academically. Encourage your student to attend class as both an obligation and a privilege. Specific class attendance policies are dictated on course syllabi and are at the discretion of faculty members teaching courses.

Extenuating or extreme circumstances (extreme illness, family death, etc.) may cause students to miss class for extended period of time. In these cases, students should contact the Dean of Students Office at (337) 482-6272 to receive an extended absence.

Encourage your student to be in touch with their professor each time they miss class to ensure they have not missed any important course information.

Q: “How many hours a week should my son or daughter study?”

A:In general, a student should be studying 2 hours outside of class for each credit hour they take during a semester. This means that if a student is enrolled in 14 credit hours, they should be spending approximately 28 hours outside of class per week studying and preparing for class. Many students underestimate the number of hours needed to study and do well in college courses. Encourage your student to spend adequate time studying and preparing. Their coursework should be the first priority.

Q: “My son or daughter has to work. How many hours should they work per week?”

A: The optimal maximum load for outside employment is 15 hours per week.

Q: “How many credit hours must a student earn to maintain TOPS eligibility?”

A: A student on Louisiana TOPS must earn 24 semester hours in the Academic Year (August – August). Students must be registered for 12+ credit hours on the 14th class day in order to receive TOPS in any given semester. The total of 24 semester hours for TOPS eligibility can be earned over the course of the fall semester, winter intersession, spring semester, May intersession, and summer term.

The University Program Council (UPC), a student organization that plans campus events, created Freshman First Down to give incoming freshmen a sense of belonging. Now a tradition on campus, UPC is offering the family of every incoming freshman two complimentary football game tickets with additional tickets available. All students get in FREE with a valid UL Lafayette ID. We will be sending out more information prior to the start of the fall semester. GEAUX CAJUNS!
