University of Turin: Using Maple T.A. and Moodle for richer learning experience

• The e-‐learning services of University of Turin since 2005 have been based on the LMS Moodle. The department of Computer Science manages several Moodle plaRorms integrated with Maple T.A., deeply used for Mathema@cs courses.
• Since 2012 these Moodle plaBorms integrated with Maple T.A. have been made available to the projects managed by the University of Turin in collaboraHon with the Italian Ministry of EducaHon, covering all stages of instrucHon from primary to high school teacher’s training (3,000 in service and incoming ).

Students can access Maple T.A. assignments from the Moodle course. Students can open an assignment just clicking on the icon on the Moodle page. The following window appears.

Clicking on «start the assignment» students access to Maple T.A. and they can do the assignment.

A_er an assignment has been submi`ed, the result appears on the Maple T.A. gradebook, which students (and teachers) can access from the Moodle course.

The results are also immediately and automaHcally registered in the Moodle gradebook with the other acHviHes. Teachers and students can track the class or their own progress.

• The structure of Moodle is based on courses. The integraHon allows each Moodle course to be mapped to a Maple T.A. class.
• The associa@on is automa@c and it can be simply performed by the teacher when seang up the course.
• Two Moodle courses can be associated to the same Maple T.A. class, so that teachers can work in the same class and pubblish assignments in different courses.

• In Moodle users can be enrolled as administrators, teachers or students.
• They are automaHcally projected into the Maple T.A. class maintaining their role.
• No other authenHcaHon is requested to a Moodle user to access Maple T.A.

The teacher can access the Maple T.A. engine for the crea@on of ques@ons and assignments from a panel at one side of the Moodle course.

A_er creaHng an assignment, the teacher can add it on the Moodle page and give it properHes as the other ac@vi@es (visibility, access condiHons, group acHvity…).

• A_er doing an assignment, the results immediately and automaHcally appears in the Moodle gradebook, as well as other Moodle acHviHes.
• If the teacher updates the grade, through the Maple T.A. opHon «Export to CMS» also the Moodle gradebook will be updated (developed by University of Turin, December 2014)

• The integraHon with Maple T.A. makes a LMS complete, as it allows to join contents and assessment in the same environment.
• While Maple T.A. is suitable for individual assessment, with Moodle group ac@vi@es with peer evalua@on can be proposed, enhancing the collaboraHve learning. Students can thus be evaluated both for their individual and their cooperaHve capaciHes.

• In Moodle other kind of valuated ac@vi@es are available, such as glossary, forum acHviHes, mindmaps, etc. They turn out to be useful in parHcular with other disciplines, as Italian and Foreign Languages.
• University of Turin has adopted Moodle integrated with Maple T.A. for all the degree courses, and Maple T.A. is used for diagnosHc and entry tests as well as formaHve and summaHve assessment also in humanis@c disciplines, which can benefit from all the Moodle acHviHes.

• Using the same environment for materials, acHviHes and assessment is less dispersive for students (and for teachers).
• Teachers can easily check the class level comparing Maple T.A. results with other Moodle acHviHes and logs.
• Teachers can add links to revision course material or other Moodle acHviHes in the feedbacks of Maple T.A. assignments, as well as links to assignments in the files on Moodle.

• The University of Turin started to develop a social learning plaBorm talking with Moodle.
• The core of a social learning plaRorm consists of resources and people (without disHncHon of role).
• Maple T.A. assignments acquire importance in the assessment as they allow to perform an automaHc evaluaHon.
