We would like to wish all teachers A Happy Teachers‘ Day. President Obama in his National Teacher of the Year Celebration address on 3 May 2016 said: “In their daily lives, the men and women who teach our children fulfill the promise of a nation that's always looking forward, that believes each generation has a responsibility to help the next in building this great country of ours and making the world a better place.” I share the sentiment of President Obama that teachers play an important part in nation building. Teachers should be awarded the recognition for the roles they play in nation building. The future of a nation depends a lot on the education of the future generation of the country. Our world has changed and continues to change at a rapid pace. Revolution in technology has transformed the way we work, live and play. To prepare for the future, our students must not only memorize facts but be critical thinkers and creative innovators. The ground zero for this to take place is in our schools. It is the teachers in partnership with parents that will ensure our students are prepared for the future. On a separate note, students sat for their mid-year examination from 7 May till 18 May 2018. At UniWorld, we celebrate progress and effort. As long as a student has tried his/her best then he/she is a winner in his/her own right. We also proudly applaud students who have improved in one way or another, in their own unique way. Keep on trying to improve. I would like to share this poem by Francis Duggan with some amendments to better suit students: YOU DID TRY YOUR BEST Your best is not good enough but that is okay There's always one better it does seem that way. At least in your efforts you can take some pride And you can feel happy that at least you've tried The name of the winner most people recall But you can feel happy that you gave it your all. There are winners in classrooms and winners in sport On the playground and football and on the tennis court But for every winner who makes headline news So many it does seem are destined to lose. And though this time you did not win the next time maybe You will be the one to enjoy victory You did try your best and though you did not succeed In your philosophical nature by example you lead. Dear Parents Teachers‘ Day was on the 16 May 2018. Monday School Assembly

A common feature of many schools across the world is the ritual of school assembly. Our weekly school assembly is held on every Monday morning. By being in assembly with the other students, it becomes something that everyone shares and identifies with, fostering greater solidarity and school spirit. This year we are getting students to be involved in leading assemblies at school. This helps build valuable presentation skills, public speaking skills and also helps develop their use of English vocabulary. Another positive outcome of student-led assemblies is improvement in students’ confidence and self-esteem as they take responsibility in articulating their thoughts over a range of topics. During a recent assembly, our Secondary 2 students presented a short video clip which they made. The clip was short but rather amusing as the acting of the students depicted the characters in the story remarkably well. They were able to draw out laughters and giggles from the rest of the students and teachers.

Examination Tips

The performance in an examination will greatly improve if students are well prepared and approach it with a positive attitude. The following tips, although not exhaustive, will hopefully help students in some way to prepare for the coming examinations. Pay attention in class. Do not be distracted by talking with your friends, day dreaming, playing with pencils, pen, rulers or erasers while a lesson is in progress. Be an active learner, listen and give full attention to the teacher. If you fail to understand any part of the lesson, do not hesitate to ask your teacher. They are ever ready to help you. Be conscientious in your work. Use Graphic organisers. Graphic organisers helps students to understand and remember contents and concepts that are being taught. They help student separate what is important from those that are interesting but not essential. They show relationship between concepts or contents and in this way show how the knowledge is structured. This helps students to develop analytical, creative and thinking skills. Make time to study. Do not cram. Set time aside every day to study. Make studying a part of your habits. Retention and understanding what is learnt will be better if learning takes place in an orderly and calm condition. Further lasting knowledge and skills can only be acquired over time. Organise your study space. Learning space must be clean, quiet and with little distractions. Noise and distractions affect concentration. Have all the things you need before the study period to prevent you from getting up to find things that you need. Concentration is the key to learning. Examination format and the topics to be examined. Familiarise with the format of the examination paper. Knowing what and how you will be tested will help you prepare for an examination. Revise and practice. “Practice makes perfect” – no truer words were ever spoken. To do well in any examination, students need to revise and practice. Revision and practice take time, that is why students must study consistently. This will also help in the mastery and retention of knowledge and skills. Have healthy meals and drink lots of water. Do you know that the brain is the most energy–consuming organ in our body? Keeping your body and brain well fuelled during an examination period is essential. So eat nutritious and well-balanced meals. Fish, nuts, fruits and milk have been proven to aid concentration and memory. Being well hydrated is essential for the brain to function at its best. Drink lots of water throughout your revision and during the examination period.

Teacher’s Day

The Ministry of Education’s theme for this year’s Teacher’s Day is “Guru Pemacu Transformasi Pendidikan” which is literally translated as Teachers the Drivers of Education Transformation. Our Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad recently said "We should devise new ways of teaching". Instead of simply finding ways to put more tablets in children’s hands, education technology will need to find new ways to supplement the best learning possible. In this regard, teachers will play an important role as the drivers of education transformation. 23 May 2018, was a treasured day for teachers and students as they celebrated Teacher’s Day together. The Head of School and the Head Teacher delivered their speeches, dedicating the day to all teachers who strive to bring out the best in their students.

Then it was time for entertainment. Students from Kindergarten and Primary classes went on to perform and gave it their all - from groups to solos, from dances to skits, it was great entertainment all the way. The last student performance, a hip-hop dance by Kai Sian of Secondary 3, wowed students as well as teachers.

The finale was a hearty song, sung by the teachers, as a surprise performance for their students. After the performances, the teachers shared the cakes presented by generous parents with their beloved students. It was indeed a very memorable event for students and teachers. Most importantly, it was a day students celebrated the incredible dedication of their everyday superheroes – their teachers. We would like to take the opportunity to say a huge thank you to the parents of Nurul Dhaniya and Muhammad Danish, as well as the parents of Rubendrajothi for so generously presenting lovely cakes and pizzas to our teachers in appreciation of their dedication to the students.

Eco-School Programme

The Eco-School programme started in April 2017 will enter a new phase in June when Term 3 commences. Eco-Schools is an international programme of environmental and sustainable developmental education for schools. At the heart of the programme is a structured ‘change management’ process called THE SEVEN STEPS, used by schools to work towards continuous improvement in environmental action. Currently, the programme is being implemented in over 50 countries around the world, involving more than 40,000 schools.

We have set up a new Eco-School committee which comprises teachers as well as students from different class levels to kick-off the next phase of the Eco-School programme. Students who have been selected as part of the Eco-School committee will have the opportunity to work with their schoolmates and teachers as

a team. Being part of a team will help students develop their interpersonal skills in addition to learning to apply creative problem-solving strategies to an issue.

Parents Teachers Meeting

Judging by the very encouraging attendance of parents and guardians, the Parents Teachers Meeting held on Saturday, 26 May 2018 was a success. A note of thanks to parents and guardians for taking time out of their busy schedule to attend the meeting. This cooperation allows parents and teachers to work in tandem to better understand students and help the students to reach their maximum potential. The feedback received will assist the school to maintain or implement programmes to make the school environment a conducive and safe place for students.

The report card is a periodic indication of a student’s academic achievement. However, it may not represent

the student’s best or worst potential. Receiving a report card can be very stressful for both student and parents. It is vital that students, who have tried their best but have not scored the expected A, are given a positive assurance and encouragement. Use the report card positively to help students improve themselves both academically and personally.
