September 2019 - Volume 33, No. 2 Committee News 2019 DeSSC New User Program is Accepting Applications The 2019 DeSSC New User Program is now accepting applications! Participate in a workshop tailored to engage new users of deep submergence science facilities, including students, early career scientists, engineers and scientists with little or no previous experience in deep-sea research. The workshop is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, December 7-8, 2019 in San Francisco, CA (before the AGU Fall meeting). Applications for travel and lodging support are being accepted through Friday, September 27, 2019. See the 2019 DeSSC New User Program Announcement for details. 2019 DeSSC Call for Nominations The UNOLS Deep Submergence Science Committee (DeSSC) is seeking nominations to fill one membership vacancy that will become open in the fall of 2019. The DESSC is the UNOLS Committee charged with providing oversight and advice to the National Deep Submergence Facility (NDSF) operator on matters concerning utilization, upgrades, and long-term planning of its vehicles (Alvin, Jason, and Sentry). The Committee strives to maintain awareness of the needs of the users for new sensors and equipment to address important scientific questions, and to provide this information to the NDSF operator and the federal agencies. Candidates should be experienced in the use of deep submergence vehicles. For further information see the Call for Nominations Announcement. OBSIC Oversight Sub-committee Stand- up NSF has announced the transfer of oversight for the Ocean Bottom Seismometer Instrument Center (OBSIC) from IRIS to a new UNOLS operating subcommittee - the OBSIC Oversight Subcommittee or OBSIC-OS. This will be a new Featured Photo Participants of the 2019 Chief Scientist Training Cruise aboard the R/V KILO MOANA, June 2019. Fleet HighlightsRV ROGER REVELLE Moving Throughits Mid-life RefitRV ROGER REVELLE is moving along smartly through itsmid-life refit All of the ldquodestructionrdquo has been completedwith all of the diesel generators motors drivesswitchboards bow-thruster overheads and old piping andwiring removed They are now in the process of puttingeverything back together with four new diesel generatorspropulsion motors retractable bow-thruster drivesswitchboards piping and a gondola for improved acousticsystem performance The re-fit is more or less onschedule The goal will be to have all the new installationwork completed by January 1 2020 and then have overthree months for startup commissioning testing dock-trials and sea-trials prior to the RV REVELLE coming backonline in mid-April 2020 After a couple of months of re-outfitting crew training and verification cruises RVREVELLE will be in service supporting science in the fall of2020 if everything goes according to plan For moredetails on the refit progress along with pictures see therecent shipyard report here

THOMPSON will complete two science cruises in the NorthAtlantic With exceptional support from WHOI as well aslocal contractors many major maintenance projects werecompleted It was RV THOMPSONs first maintenanceperiod since the ships mid-life refit overhaul finished up inDecember 2017 RV THOMPSON departed for the SouthAtlantic in mid-August for major science cruises in theSouthern Hemisphere

TS Barry Visits LUMCONTropical Storm Barry passed over Southern Louisiana on 13July 2019 LUMCON experienced flooding and plenty ofresidual mud to clean up afterwards Fortunately RVPELICAN departed for an NSF-funded cruise 15 July onschedule - a real tribute to the preparation and recoveryefforts by the LUMCON staff and RV PELICAN crew
