Right now I know that many Clubs in District 105E are gearing themselves up for the Christmas period. This is a hugely busy time and like many other Santa's around the District, I'll be out with the helpers at shops and garden centres and visiting villages and schools. Good luck to you all! I think Christmas shows our organisation at its very best, and it is a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate to everyone in the community what a difference we as Lions make. It’s also a great chance to convince people to join us as members! Even though membership is up on the Lionistic Year, there are nearly 40 Clubs who have not yet recruited a new member since July. Please remember... Now to this months successes. One of the key parts of the District Plan this year has been to put an emphasis on Youth and in November there were two notable successes. Firstly Southwell Minster School Leos Club was Chartered with 31 members. This was a magnificent achievement by Keith Hobbs and Southwell Lions, Nicole Lyons from the School and Graham Venables from the District. Congratulations to Sarah Burke and Rebecca Pritchett who are Co- Presidents of the new Leos Club. ( ) The second achievement was the District Final of the World Peace Poster Competition organised by Anne Barker. Thank you to the increased number of Clubs who entered this year, the standard of the entries was very high and the winners from Grimsby Cleethorpes and Loughborough Lions were excellent. ( ) Now two quick reminders to everyone... Our District Convention on 11/12 March 2016 will be a truly spectacular event at Belvoir Castle. We’ll have a new format for the business sessions concentrating on having fun, sharing ideas and looking to the future. The race night on the Friday at the Hotel will be lively and the Banquet and Ball in the State Dining Room at the Castle on the Saturday evening will be a once in a life time experience. So... please book now! Please also take the opportunity to look at the proposals for Redistricting, Streamlining and Improving the Governance of our Multiple District. Club Presidents have all the information and I'd value your thoughts. Finally back to Christmas, it is a time for celebration and to spend time with the family and friends. On behalf of both Ann and myself, I wish you all DG Lion Paul Stafford A Happy Christmas to you all...

Firstly – a sincere thanks to all Clubs who have made donations to mychosen charity. I’m humbled by your generosity and know the funds will beput to excellent use.For all you golfers here’s another great opportunity to support The MSSociety. On Friday 13 May 2016 the society is running a charity golf competition. The event will take place at Northamptonshire Golf and Country Club, Stragglethorpe. Cost is £200for a team of 4 (including two course lunch – and soup and a roll when you’ve finished playing). Havea great day and support The MS Society. For more information contactAs wife of the DG, I’ve also been working with my fellow ‘other halves’ for the last two years. Betweenus we’ve made 30 knitted and crocheted cot blankets. We also raised £500 by auctioning two of ourblankets. The funds will go towards purchasing beds at an orphanage in Belarus and in Septemberthe blankets went out on a truck to the same place. In October this year I went to Fisher House with 7 other wives of DGs. This is a ‘home away fromhome’ for military patients at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. When military patientsare being treated at the Hospital their families can stay at Fisher House. We met family memberswhose loved ones had had legs amputated or were in a coma. To give them a taste of home webaked cakes, buns and made Rocky Road for the little ones. All were much appreciated. What a greatservice project! Finally, to respond to a question that many of you have asked me... If you are making a donation tomy appeal would you please make cheques payable to withan endorsement onthe back of the cheque DG’s Wife’s AppealAgain - THANKS to you all for what you’re doing to help to provide vital support for the MS Societyand moreover for MS sufferers in our localities. I hope that you all enjoy a very Happy Christmas.

During recent weeks there have beenseveral reports that Lions have beenspotted in bushes outside a home forelderly residents...Our investigations have revealed that thisis indeed . Groups of Lions (from the

Pride) have beenclearly seen working hard to removeovergrown bushes and trees from thegardens that surround William PeardonCourt to enable elderly residents to onceagain enjoy the gardens. On the day when we sent our intrepidSafari Photographer out to record thisactivity President Iain Bell, Treasurer Ri-chard Darlaston, Vice President JennyFyfe and Past President Kevin Loydallwere all busily at work.

Want to show that you are a Lion proud of the fact that Lionshave been for 100 years?Centennial ties and scarves are now available and provide asimple and inexpensive way to promote our wonderful organisation and our Centennial celebrations. Both bear the Centennial logo and they’re quite striking in the Lions colours of blue and yellow.

These items are being sold at cost! That's right... there are NO add-ons. This is not a fundraising initiative but simply a move to promote and celebrate our Centenary.

Each of the District’s Centennial Committee members have supplies so, as they visit your Club, their motto is definitely going to be (to coin a phrase)...

During the last Lions’ Year Jane Hall (wife of then DG Lion Alan Hall)launched her DG Wife’s Appeal. She chose to support Guide Dogs and nowshe’s delighted to announce that the final sums have been collated. Theoverall result is staggering and signifies a superb 105E achievement. It’s not only Jane who is keen to acknowledge the generous support received from 105E Clubs.Sue Smithson, representing the Guide Dogs organistion was just as keen as Jane to pay tribute toLions. She recently told Update E, ‘District 105E really got behind the Jane Hall’s appeal on behalfof Guide Dogs to raise the fantastic amount of £10,630.10. Everyone at Guide Dogs is reallygrateful for this huge donation as the organisation does not receive any government or lotteryfunding... fundraising is our lifeblood, without it Guide Dogs would not exist. So, I have to say a big,big thank you to Jane and to all who contributed during the year’.

On June 7 1917 delegates were meeting in Chicago to discuss the formation of our organisation. The only point of contention - the selection of a name. Melvin Jones had researched the idea of calling the new organisation being convinced The Lion stood for strength, courage, fidelity and vital action. In a ballot the name was chosen over other names that were proposed. So our name and symbol was adopted, but two years later, at the 1919 Convention, there was a move to change our symbols. However, a young attorney, Halsted Ritter from Denver, claimed ‘The name stands not only for fraternity, good fellowship, strength of character and purpose, but above all, its combination of L-I-O-N-S heralds to all the true meaning of citizenship: LIBERTY, INTELLIGENCE, OUR NATION'S SAFETY’.Much later in 1931 THE LION Magazine featured this interpretation of the association's name:

Did you know? The two Lions on our emblem

are depicted as facing bothpast and future – showing pride

of heritage and confidencein the future.

The Lions Clubs International PeacePoster is an opportunity for Lions andyoung people to discuss how peacecould be achieved. It provides a vehicleby which these young students are ableto express themselves in words and artwhich can be shared with young peoplefrom the many nationalities taking partin the competition.Eleven entries from seven Clubs in theDistrict presented the judges with adifficult task and reaching their decisionwas tough. All entries were of a very highstandard but the winner was eventuallyidentified as (12) who wassponsored by

The Woodland Trust are offering free trees to be planted next year but Clubs must plan soon! The Trust will be considering requests up until September 2016 but the ideal time for Clubs to applywill be February / March 2016. Trees will be despatched in November 2016 ready for planting.Individual orders will be despatched, free of charge, to a destination of your choosing and three packsizes are available...

One of the criteria that the Trust imposes is that the trees canbe seen and enjoyed by the general public and not tucked awayout of sight. This is an ideal opportunity to enlist the help of youth groups. It’s a great way of connecting children with nature and itprovides a perfect project for your Club to adopt as partof its Centenial Celebrations programme.Permission of your Local Councils is naturally a must andconsent to display a Lions plaque should be sought.

Now it’s LOUGHBOROUGH LIONS who’ve been helping our Air Ambulances

The event welcomed a pair of distinguished Official Starters, Fundraiser Charlotte Marson of the Derbyshire Rutland Leicestershire Air Ambulance and Local MP Nicky Morgan sent the sponsored riders on their way. The participants peddled enthusiastically around the 50 mile course which started at Loughborough University. Every one of the cyclists taking part had pledged to raise a minimum £50 in sponsorship and in October the whole event reached its climax as the Club proudly handed over a huge +. This is yet another splendid story to add to others featured in recent editions of where Lions have raised staggering sums of money in a single event... Another is surely deserved here.

WILL YOUR BRIGHT IDEA BE THE NEXT TO BE PUBLISHED HERE?

This novel attraction has been aroundfor many years and, no doubt, some ofyou will have read about it previously. However, it’s such a great example of aLions’ that we decided itreally was worth another mention here.Built in 1976 Bourne Lions’ Fun Bus isstill successfully used at fetes andshows as a treat for youngsters andprovides amusement wherever it goes...often giving rides to the grandchildren offormer users.Constructed by Club members the Bushas, in recent years, had to conform toHealth & Safety requirements. Anannual examination by the Fairgroundregulator is necessary and changes inLions insurance have led to higherpremiums. But, the bus still provides a sourceof income and a superb means ofheightening Lions Club awareness.

When the Multiple District Convention decided, for financial reasons, todiscontinue the Youth Football Competition many Lions in 105E felt that theethos of the competition should not be lost. They agreed a competition in someform should still be still held - thus 105E’s Under 12’s 6-a-side competitionwas born.Unlike the original MD Competition the 105E format is a one day tournamentand is organised by Retford Lions Club. Starting at 9.30 am start it’s generallycompleted by around 4.00 pm.

As part of the Youth Team’s Strategic Plan we’re trying to attract a minimumof 16 Clubs to bring Young People for a day of great fun and competition plusan opportunity of winning either the Shield or the Youth Football Cup. All youngpeople playing in past competitions have agreed it’s great fun to be playing teams outside their normalleague matches and meeting other young people who love the game of football. Meanwhile - for thoseof us who ‘spectate’, Retford Lions provide hot dogs, burgers and hot drinks to keep the party rolling.

his must be returnedto Youth Football Officer, Lion Philip Moult, by 31st March. The fee of £25.00 per team entered coversthe costs for medals which are presented to the finalists of both competitions. We are very lucky that Retford Lions Club are prepared to run and organise this competition so it wouldbe great if Clubs would rise to the challenge and support this District Competition. To find out more contact:

CLUB MEMBERS get in the swim... A great time was had by all as OadbyWigston Lions staged their 2015 Annual Sponsored Swim.Members of the Club were among the many swimmers whotook part and collectively raised a superb total in excess of£3,750. Mayor of Wigston Cllr. Latif Darr was happy to lend ahand in helping Lions record the laps of swimmers taking part.

Publicity efforts were strong with local radio signed up, a 2 page spread in the local paper, Facebook coverage,

recently had great success when theyrevived the Motor Show idea (a nostalgic flash backto events at Earls Court and more latterly the NEC).It was Lion Peter Masters who came up with the ideaof staging a local show in the Town and the Clubsoon entered into an agreement with the RetfordCricket Club to use their facilities (including catering). The arrangement was ideal and Lions were still ableto head up the event and undertake all organisation.A decision was made to donate all proceeds to thelocal Bassetlaw Hospice. In an effort to attract more than just male motoring enthusiasts there was a conscious decision madeto name the event This was reflected too in the range of attractionsorganised. 13 motor manufactures were represented and a specialist second hand dealer brought aselection of luxury and exotic cars. Quite a number of vintage/veteran car owners were also invitedto create even more interest. The ‘family attractions’ included an area of children’s amusements, abrass band, a ladies choir, a male vocalist, cosmetics and craft stalls and group sports opportunity.A huge effort was made to publicise the event and great organisational steps were taken to ensureeverything was finely tuned on the day... THE RESULT: Great satisfaction from exhibitors, an enjoyableand entertaining day for those attending and a massive £5.5k boost for Hospice Funds...

Lions Clubs around the Scunthorpe area have for many years and in numerous ways supported thework of . Every week, Glanford Lindsey Lions collect food, which is kindly donated throughthe Club by a very popular restaurant business, and deliver it to The Forge. This enables staff toprovide, among the many other services they offer, meals on a regular basis to families and individualswho do not have the means of preparing a hot and nourishing meal for themselves.Recently The Forge made it known that Sleeping Bags were needed for people who they know willbe during the coming winter

all agreed to contribute towards the cost of 35 Sleeping bags and hold-halls to keep them dry. This is yet another great example of how Lions can join forces to provide valuable support for otherorganisations who, just like us, care about people who need help.
