FRIDAY 24 MAY 2019

Hobsonville School is on a mission to become a Waste Free School. Reducing the non organic waste starts with school lunches. Did you know that over 50% of the waste in our school is plastic brought into our school in lunches? Remember: Everything in a waste-free lunch can be eaten, reused, recycled, or composted. Also, remember to keep foods that need to be refrigerated cold using a reusable, insulated lunch box or bag or include a reusable ice pack in your lunch. Suggestions on how to pack a waste free lunchbox Buy a lunchbox with compartments allowing wet items to be separated from dry items. When shopping buy items that are not in individual packets. Try buying bulk items or items that do not have plastic packaging. Get your children involved, discuss food options that are plastic free. Make a plan each week identifying items you will need to purchase. What help do we need from you? Look into your lunches plan and identify how you can make these waste free. Work with your children to plan out lunches they enjoy and are waste free. Watch the video link below to see how other families have started this journey. https://www.nzherald.co.nz/index.cfm?objectid=12157724&ref=twitter

On Thursday 9 May, our Senior Kapa haka attended the celebration of Aishani Dutt’s life at Morrisons in Henderson. Our students performed several waiata including Hareruia, a beautiful te reo version of Hallelujah. They, along with Matua, performed a heartfelt haka to Aishani as she left with her whanau. We were very proud of the way the students represented Hobsonville School and for the love and respect they showed to Aishani. Mrs Thompson—Te Reo Leader

Hot Topic… Waste Free Lunches

They Said It…. Increase in Children’s Hearing Loss

Te Reo

Kiwi kids are suffering hearing loss at alarming rates, as they spend hours listening to loud music on headphones. Some are even complaining of constant ringing in their ears, so bad it keeps them awake at night. It’s sparked fears at the National Foundation of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing that local kids could be going deaf at faster rates than global averages. A pilot study by the foundation of 192 students at Auckland’s Rutherford College this year, found 11.9% had hearing loss that warranted a referral to a medical specialist. This was more than double the World Health Organisation’s global estimates that hearing loss affected 5.3% of 12-to-19-year olds living in middle-to-high income countries. “Unfortunately, hearing never comes back—if you lose it, it’s gone”, NFDHH Chief Executive Natasha Gallardo said. “That’s why this project is so important because we need to quickly understand what the hearing loss rates are here and then develop a prevention programme.” It comes as rates of hearing loss accelerate around the world due to technology and society becoming noisier. WHO now estimates one in five people aged between 12 and 35 suffers from hearing loss—a 30% increase compared to the late 1990s. In New Zealand, an estimated 880,350 people, or almost 20% of the population, suffered from hearing loss in 2016 at a cost of $957 million to the economy, according to a report commissioned by NFDHH. 2019 Y7/8 Norwest Chess Champions! Well done to our team winning 1st place overall in the Y7/8 NW Chess Championship, with Dominic Z. placing 1st individual and Tianqi Z. placing 2nd individual. Mr Hill

Orienteering The Y6-8 Norwest Orienteering Championship was a great

experience on Thursday 8 May for all 36 Hobby students involved. Some outstanding individual times were recorded by our students. Well done everyone! Mr Hill

Netball North Harbour Netball observed a minute's silence just

before the 7.20pm game on Thursday last week, to acknowledge the passing of Aishani. Thank you to all who spared a minute of their time. Our Year 7/8 netball team braved the Netball North Harbour courts and played with passion and drive! We are very proud of every single one of the girls. Thank you to Eliza Kell and Alicia Martin for all their support with the girls over the last couple of weeks. Mrs E.

NW Boys Football On Tuesday this week, the Y 7/8 Boys Soccer team competed in the NW tournament on the 21 May. A very inexperienced side, they worked hard on teamwork and passing to make the most of

their skills. They did very well, earning 6th place out of 16 teams. NW Girls Football With a very inexperienced team, the Y7/8 Girls competed at the NW Soccer tournament on the 24 May. We learnt a lot about positioning and enjoyed watching some very skilled teams. Unfortunately, the result didn't go our way, but a good time was had by all. Miss P.

FRIDAY 24 MAY 2019

Sir Peter Blake VR Experience Our Year 5-8's really enjoyed this amazing experience throughout last week. NZ-VR is a brand new virtual reality programme which is a fun, immersive and educational learning experience with the aim of connecting thousands of young New Zealanders to the marine environment. Today our class was privileged to have our Sir Peter Blake VR Experience. Our two administrators were very helpful and encouraged us to think about the condition of our oceans. We go to see the different environments (in virtual reality) and compare them. After each short video, we summarised what we saw and decided if each environment was healthy or not. Sarah P. Y8 H24

Y7/8 Rocket Challenge Our Year 7/8's are embarking on a great adventure this term. The Rocket Challenge is the first programme in the Wonder Project family. It’s designed to get young Kiwis excited and wondering about science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

New experiences for our

Y6 and Y8 students On Friday 17 May, our Y6 students enjoyed a taste of Y7/8 Technology off site at Wairau Intermediate. Meanwhile, many of our Y8s visited Massey High School and had a glimpse of what to expect next year. Both groups really enjoyed the experience. We will be holding a Y7/8 Information Evening for parents of Y5/6 students on Thursday 27 June, starting at 6.30pm in the auditorium. Displays and examples of current work will be available and current Y7/8 students will be there to share some of their learning. At 7.00pm there will be a presentation by teachers, followed by light refreshments.

What we are up to...

World Aquabots Championships

Our Y7/8 students, Namrita I. and Nitai N., are travelling to Washington DC this weekend to compete in the World Aquabots Championships. Mr Hill will also be accompanying them. We wish them a safe journey and the best of luck when they compete on 1 and 2 June. Please see separate email with their itinerary.

First Aid Course On Tuesday this week, 30 of our staff members spent the afternoon learning valuable First Aid at their 4 hour refresher course.
