Enriching a Tradition of Excellence

The Upper Arlington Community Foundation began in 2003 with the dream of creating a foundation that would have lasting positive impact on our community. The Foundation’s first gift was received from a former UA resident whose desire is to improve the quality of life in UA. In 2007, the Foundation received a 501 (c)(3) designation, becoming a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the excellence and traditions that have made Upper Arlington a wonderful place to call home.

The Foundation aims to be a trusted, respected, well-established premier umbrella foundation that serves Upper Arlington. We are dedicated to enriching the traditions that have contributed to the lifestyle of our community and to enhancing the quality of life for all residents. We seek to address important community needs through a representative community-wide volunteer effort.

The Foundation receives gifts and bequests from the public and is dedicated to administering them wisely, creating a legacy for our community. Through grant-making and support of innovative charitable programs and services in the community and with collaboration among Upper Arlington organizations, we continue to strive toward our goals.

The Foundation’s funds are administered by the Columbus Foundation.

THE MISSION OF THE UPPER ARLINGTON COMMUNITY FOUNDATION IS TO ENHANCE THE QUALITY OF LIFE IN UPPER ARLINGTON BY ENRICHING TRADITIONS AND SUPPORTING INNOVATION THROUGH LEADERSHIP AND GIVING.

Enriching a Tradition of Excellence in Creating Centers for Community

Since our beginnings, the Foundation has awarded over one million dollars in grants to Upper Arlington. Our signature project, Preserving UA’s Legacy Campaign, was launched in 2009. The Foundation embraced the opportunity to combine a historically significant building—the oldest known barn in UA, dating to 1829—with a new public recreational structure. The UACF raised over $900,000.00 to move, reconstruct and add a new timber frame structure to this barn. In 2011, the UACF gifted the Amelita Mirolo Barn to the City of Upper Arlington. This is the largest gift ever received by the City of Upper Arlington.

Today, the Amelita Mirolo Barn is a favorite UA venue. Over 250 families, non-profit organizations and businesses joined together to create this wonderful new UA treasure. The UACF is proud to have been the leader on the project. The barn is used almost every day for events that include graduation parties, children’s programming, cultural projects and events, weddings and family reunions.

The Upper Arlington Community Foundation certainly has created a new tradition in Upper Arlington with the Amelita Mirolo Barn.

Enriching a Tradition of Excellence for a Beautiful Upper Arlington

Our newest fund, The UACF Beautification Fund, seeks to enhance the appearance of public spaces throughout the City of UA by forming partnerships with volunteers, residents, community based organizations and non-profit agencies. In partnership with the City of UA, this program will focus on adding colorful and sustainable landscape enhancements, improving the appearance of the community and our quality of life.

The following funds are helping us to achieve this mission:

• The George S. Renkert Fund supports the development and perpetuation of The Renkert Garden at the corner of McCoy and Woodbridge Roads within Thompson Park. This garden received a 2014 Merit Award for Landscape Design from the National Perennial Plant Association.

• The UACF is honored to receive grants for beautification from the Joseph and Marlene Berwanger Fund. The Mallway project, which now displays beautiful, permanent planters and hanging baskets is funded by the Berwanger family.

• The W. Gregory Guy family is devoted to improving the beauty and functionality of historic Miller Park.

• A grant from The Little Garden Club of Columbus is creating a new look for the Windham Road gateway garden.

Thompson Park was a favorite spot of my husband. So, it seemed an appropriate place for a remembrance. John Easton, a member of the UACF was promoting garden spots in UA. I went to the Foundation for guidance. They helped me create a fund at the Columbus Foundation to perpetuate the care of the garden, put me in touch with Lisa Metcalf, UA Horticulturist, and together we created the beautiful garden.

Jenny Lou Renkert

We established the Marlene and Joseph Berwanger Fund with the Upper Arlington Community Foundation to give back to the community that has given so much to our family. Our focus is beautification for Upper Arlington. Our first goal is to enhance the Arlington Avenue Mallway. We are proud of the first steps taken in 2014 to add color and vibrancy to the Mallway, and look forward as this area grows even more beautiful in the coming years. We hope our efforts will inspire others in our community to contribute to the UACF, making their own dreams come true for Upper Arlington.

Marlene and Joe Berwanger

Enriching a Tradition of Excellence for Families

The UACF is proud to be the presenting sponsor for the City of Upper Arlington Parks and Recreation Department’s four seasonal family friendly special events: Spring Fling, Summer Celebration, Fall Fest and Winter Festival. These events create opportunities for families to gather, celebrate and enjoy our parks.

The UACF awarded grants to three Upper Arlington elementary schools: Barrington, Greensview and Windermere Elementary for new playgrounds that are ADA accessible and will provide years of enjoyment for all children.

Enriching a Tradition of Excellence for Cultural Arts

The Upper Arlington Community Foundation is committed to supporting the arts in community spaces. Through a supporting grant, the UACF helped bring internationally renowned sculptor Alfred Tibor’s “Second Steps” to the grounds of Sunny 95 Park. This hopeful art form graces the east side of The Amelita Mirolo Barn.

We support, through grants to UA Arts, programs that bring music to our community. The summer music series, including Jazz in July, provides opportunities for our residents to enjoy exceptional music alongside friends and family.

Our popular UA Author Series brings bestselling authors to Upper Arlington, reflecting our community’s love of literature.

Enriching a Tradition of Excellence for Safety

By supporting the UA Police and Fire Division through grants, the UACF is devoted to helping keep our city a safe place for all of our residents. We are proud to have been a part of projects such as Stay UA, File of Life and Safety Town.

With our close proximity to Sunny 95 Park, the Greensview Elementary PRIDE playground is used by more than our students but by families attending sporting events, activities at the barn or just looking for a neighborhood playground. We offer multi-use play areas all in one viewing area. The new equipment provides inclusive play structures for all children to swing, spin, climb or play music. Thanks to the Upper Arlington Community Foundation for the grant to help make this wonderful addition to Upper Arlington a reality!

Meghan HarderCo-Chair Greensview PRIDE Playground Committee

The dedication and passion of the Community Foundation is contagious. This becomes more and more apparent on each and every project we do with them. In fact, our staff now has the Foundation in mind even before beginning a project. They have become that intertwined with the fiber of the community.

Tim Moloney – Director of Parks and Recreation, City of Upper Arlington

A Message from the Chair

Dear Upper Arlington Residents,

I am thrilled to pen this letter to you in the afterglow of Issue 23 passing with flying colors. The citizens of our fine community have spoken with a resounding voice – Yes! We are ready to invest in our future.

Myself, along with my colleagues on the board of trustees, are pleased to share with you the Upper Arlington Community Foundation Report to the Community. Herein you will discover many of the unique ways your friends and neighbors are helping to preserve our near 100-year legacy. This report describes who we are, and what we have accomplished.

Upper Arlington runs deep. You are a member in a community that has benefitted from careful stewardship for nearly a hundred years. We are authentic and sincere people, focused on our collective and common good. We ask you to take up the mantle of leadership and play your part in preserving our beautiful legacy.

As you contemplate your personal philanthropy and family’s legacy, please consider giving locally where you have made your home and raised your children. We are blessed with an open canvas of options on how you can give back to Upper Arlington. What is your passion? We can help you find a way to memorialize it, whether it’s beautifying a park, preserving our history or giving to a specific program.

Do not sit idle. Take action on your passion. As Woody Hayes would say, “Pay it forward.” Take ownership of your legacy and be a steward for the future of UA.

The Board of Trustees joins me in inviting you to become involved in the UACF. We welcome your comments and your ideas for Upper Arlington, and we appreciate your support.

Sincerely,

W. Gregory GuyChairman, Upper Arlington Community Foundation
