Public general aviation services are offered through the Quakertownand Pennridge Airports. The Quakertown Airport, operated by theBucks County Airport Authority, features a paved 3,200-foot runwaywith full taxiway, hangars and tie-downs, air services facility and aterminal building. Maintenance, repair service, fuel and flightinstruction are all available. The Pennridge Airport, located just

south of Quakertown offers a 4,200-foot asphalt runway capable ofjet landings and offers 100LL and Jet A fuels. This airport also offerstandem and accelerated free fall skydiving experiences. LehighValley International Airport in Allentown offers 25 nonstop flightsthrough four airlines. Philadelphia International can be reachedwithin one hour from anywhere in Upper Bucks, while NewarkInternational in New Jersey can be accessed in less than an hour anda half.

The Quakertown area is situated in the northern portion ofBucks County – one of three original counties laid out byWilliam Penn in 1682, and is located 15 miles south ofBethlehem and 40 miles north of Philadelphia, makingQuakertown a border town of both the Delaware Valleyand Lehigh Valley metropolitan areas.

The Borough of Quakertown encompasses approximatelytwo square miles while the surrounding communities ofRichland Township (including the villages of California,Paletown, Rich Hill, and Shelly), Milford Township, andthe Boroughs of Trumbuersville and Richlandtown, add anadditional 50.2 square miles. Combined, the area is hometo approximately 36,000 residents with an additional64,000 in the outlying communities within the Palisadesand Pennridge School Districts - also located in UpperBucks County, that rely on the convenience for goods andservices within the heart of Upper Bucks – known asQuakertown.

In the early 18th century, the first white settlers of Englishand Welsh Friends, popularly referred to as Quakersarrived and they shared the land with the peaceable tribeof Lenni Lenape Indians who lived along the creeks.Because the region was poorly drained, it was commonlycalled the “Great Swamp”. When Welsh, English andGerman pioneers settled in the area, they found thatEuropean farming techniques could produce fertile soil

and the region came to be called “Rich Land”. The areawas incorporated as Richland Township in 1734. The arealocated along the Lehigh River to the north was also beingsettled during the mid-eighteenth century, and a turnpiketo Bethlehem passed through the Township. The village ofQuakertown grew up between the Quaker meetinghouseand the Red Lion Inn making it the religious andcommercial center of the area. In 1801, the settlementofficially became known as Quakertown and the first postoffice bearing its name was established in 1803.

As a crossroad village with a tavern, Quakertown soonbecame a stopover for stagecoaches and commercialtraffic between Allentown and Philadelphia. It was thecore of the extensive community of Welsh and Germanfarmers that resided in the outlying villages that includedMilford Square and Trumbauersville and farmland inHaycock Township . The village center remained quitesmall until the mid-nineteenth century. Prior to the CivilWar, residents played key roles in hiding the Liberty Bell,organizing the Fries Rebellion, and assisted fugitive slavesescape to the North and to Canada through theUnderground Railroad.

Quakertown became a borough in February, 1855. Inpreparation for the borough council form of government,the first Chief Burgess, Edward Foulke, Jr., was elected in1854. The construction of the North Pennsylvania Railroad

in 1855 gave a great impetus to growth in the area. Thecombination of the railroad and national economic expansionfollowing the Civil War changed Quakertown from a tiny village toa bustling commercial center. In the nineteenth century, localindustrial establishments included cigar and cigar box factories, silkmills, harness factories, and stove foundries.

During the early decades of the 20th century, passenger trainservice and the “Liberty Bell” trolley line brought tourists fromPhiladelphia and its suburbs to Upper Bucks County but by the1920s the automobile began to challenge horse-drawn and railtransportation. After 1929, bus service had replaced the trolleybetween Richlandtown and Quakertown. During the GreatDepression, a federal highway was constructed through thetownship to relieve traffic on Bethlehem Pike. U.S. Route 309entered close to Rich Hill in the South, cut through farms to thewest and south of Quakertown, and ran close to Shelly Station onits way to Lehigh County and the coal regions. Gas stations,restaurants and stores soon filled in along the highway.

During the Second World War, farms and factories ramped up tofull production in the war effort. Farms in the township diversifiedto produce vegetables, such as tomatoes for Campbell’s SoupCompany, poultry and swine. Quakertown was transformed into acommercial manufacturing center.

The Borough of Quakertown and surrounding Richland Townshipalong with the Boroughs of Richlandtown, Trumbauersville andMilford Township, continue to serve as the hub of commerce in theUpper Bucks region. The tradition of enterprise and hard work has

been carried down through the years to present-day Quakertown. Itis the charming blend of the past and the present, old traditions andprogressive spirit which makes the Quakertown area a pleasantplace to live and work.

years this building has played a

pivotal role in the history of the

underground railroad, an original

serving spot for today’s birch beer

television’s Lassie and his owner,

Eric Knight, creator of the classic

“Lassie Come Home” series, with

kitchen serves up a wide menu of

interesting appetizers, all-American

T O U R I S M & R E C R E A T I O N

History and outdoor recreation are the Upper Bucks area’scentral focal point. Historical sites, rock climbing, fishing,boating and parks are ubiquitous to the area, but greatshopping, award-winning vineyards and entertainmentvenues are among the other amenities provided to the

area’s tourists.

A number of historic covered bridges, museums and more can bediscovered throughout the area. The Mercer and Fonthill Museumsare lined with a collection of nearly 40,000 artifacts representingpre-1850 American life. A National Historic Landmark, theMoravian Pottery and Tile Works, is a working history museum thatcontinues to produce handmade tiles for purchase. Durham Forge,the Burgess Foulke House and Liberty Bell Hall also appear on theagenda of historic sites to explore.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the QuakertownTrain Station is among the area’s must-see attractions. The restored1902 Reading Railroad passenger terminal served as the largeststation between Lansdale and Bethlehem along the company’sBethlehem Branch, providing riders with a connection to a numberof great east coast areas.

Bucks County is also home to a little known secret: perfect grape-growing conditions. With rolling hills, prime soil and a moderateclimate, Bucks County is one of the best grape growing regions onthe eastern seaboard. Guests can spend a day traveling along theBucks County Wine Trail featuring eight distinct vineyards andwineries that welcome visitors for tours, tastings and a variety ofspecial events.

For the nature enthusiast, Upper Bucks is rife with serene outdoorattractions. The majestic Delaware River, the 549-acre LakeNockamixon and the 126-acre Tinicum Park are only a few of theregion’s most impressive natural sites. The 518-acre QuakertownSwamp, an Audobon society-designated Important Bird Area, ishome to the largest great blue heron rookery in the easternPennsylvania region, providing refuge to 91 bird species.

A stop at the extraordinary Ringing Rocks State Park, a 128-acrepark home to a 7-8 acre field of “singing” boulders, will keep thefamily entertained for an afternoon. Ralph Stover State Park offerspicnicking, fishing, white water boating, hiking and rock climbing.

The “High Rocks” section of the park features an outstanding viewof a horseshoe bend in the Tohickon Creek and the surroundingforest. Experienced rock climbers use the 200-foot sheer rock face,but the cliffs are sheer and dangerous.

Bucks County was the fourth county in Pennsylvaniato develop and adopt its own Farmland Preservationprogram. The program uses funds from the state,county and local municipalities to purchaseconservation easements from owners of productivefarmland. Since 1997, the Bucks County Open SpaceProgram has been a success in both the quantity andquality of land protected. The County’s investment of$59 million leveraged approximately $80 million inadditional funding (primarily through state and localmunicipal matches) resulting in a total of $140million dedicated to the preservation of more than15,000 acres.
