    Note:Itismandatoryforthecandidatetoappearinboth

    thePapers ofCivilServices (Prelim) Examination for the

    purpose of evaluation. Therefore a candidate will be

    disqualified in case he/she does not appear in both the

    papersofCivilServices(Prelim)Examination.

    UPSC Civil Services Main Examination Revised Syllabus

    Pattern 2013

    The Civil ServicesMain examination is designed to test

    theacademictalentoftheaspirant,alsohis/herabilityto

    present his/ her knowledge in a clear and coherentmanner.ThemainExaminationis intendedtoassessthe

    overall intellectual traits and depth of understanding of

    candidates rather than merely the range of their

    informationandmemory.

    TheUPSChas revised thepatternofCivilServicesMain

    examinationfrom2013.

    Now thereare 7 + 2 = 9 papers to beanswered in the

    main examination. All of them are of descriptive type.

    There are two qualifying papers 1) any modern Indian

    language2)Englishareof300markseach.Theirmarks

    willnotbecountedinthemainexamination.

    Thecandidate isallowed touseanyone languagefrom

    theEighthScheduleoftheConstitutionorEnglishasthe

    mediumofwritingtheexamination.

    According to the newpattern there are "FOUR"General

    Studiespapereachcomprisingof300Markswithatotal

    of 1200 Marks. The scope of the syllabus of General

    Studiesisofdegreelevel.

    There isonly "ONE"optional subject tochoose from the

    list of subjects. It comprises of two papers each of 300

    marks. So the total of optional paper is 600 marks.

    Candidate isallowed totakeupliteratureasanoptional

    subject"withouttheconditionalityofhavingtodohis/her

    graduationinthat language'sliterature.Thescopeofthe

    syllabus of optional paper is higher than the bachelor's

    degreebutlowerthanthemaster'slevel.

    Interview/PersonalityTestisof300Marks.Candidatecan

    givepreferenceofthelanguageinwhichtheymayliketo

    be interviewed. UPSC will make arrangement for the

    translators.

    Thetotalmarkofthewrittenexaminationis2000Marks.

    It's very important to formulate your own strategy as it

    paystobeyourself.Howeverforthegeneralguidanceto

    tackle Civil Services examination, here are some of the

    guidelines which will help the aspirant to achieve

    success.

    1.Familiarity with the optional syllabi: Get yourself wellinformed about the content of the syllabi and the

    topics it covers. A thorough familiarity with your

    optionalreducesyourmentalburdenatthefirstsight

    itself.

    2.Thoroughinsightofthequestionpapers:Itisthemostimportantpartofyourstrategyasinvestingyourtime

    skillfully will reap rich dividends. Go through the

    questionpapersofpasttenyearstoidentifythepattern

    andselectthetopicswhichareaskedveryfrequently.

    Simultaneously, identify those topics which are

    particularly useful for conventional essay type

    questions. Once you have clearly demarcated the

    topicsfortheconventionalandtheobjectivetypes,the

    rest will be an easier task. A thorough insight of the

    pastpaperswillthereforesolvetwoofyourpurposes.

    It would boost your confidence level initially as you

    standard good books. Also it is advisable to collect

    4.Prefer youownnotes: It is always advisable tomakenotesof the relatedtopics.Awell craftednotesolves

    two purposes. On the one hand the aspirant goes

    throughthesyllabusonceandontheotherhanditis

    ofimmensehelpontheeveofexamination.

    5.A specific strategy for the general studies: Generalstudies cover everything under the sun. But there isnothing to get panic, a glance over the last years

    question' paper will make things easier. Broadly we

    cancategoriesthistopicunderthefollowingheads.

    a.History:Ahugestressisgiventomodernhistoryandfreedommovement.AlsoemphasisisgiventoAncient

    India. A cursory glance over the medieval history

    wouldservethepurpose.

    b.Geography:A huge stress is to be given to physicalgeography andmaps related questions. Get yourself

    well-acquainted with maps with the help of a good

    Atlas.

    Some more important points:

    As already said, always rely on yourself preparednotes.Gothroughyourshortnotesrigorously.

    Prepare out short notes of important topics withrelevant points and just before the examination rely

    solelyonit.

    Alwaysrelyonrevisions. Takeagoodsleepontheeveofexamination.Itismostimportantforyourbrilliantperformance.

    Nevergothroughanybookontheeveofexamination. Don'treadanynewtopic. Don't get engaged with any confusing question orproblem as your prior investment (with studies) will

    onlybringdividendstoyou.
