About Cremation

Cremation is an alternative to burial or entombment; however, it does not limit the funeral or memorialization options in any way. When you choose cremation, you still have the same memorial options as someone who chooses casket burial. Many people are surprised to hear that selecting cremation does not eliminate the possibility of having a funeral service. The choice is entirely up to your personal preference.

Although direct cremation is an option, families often find that having a funeral service actually brings closure to a life well lived. Whether you choose a private Family Final Farewell, or a full traditional service followed by cremation, the choices allow you to personalize a memorial tribute to your loved one. When you choose cremation, your options can include:

• Cremation with no family or friends present at a visitation or funeral service

• A Family-Only Final Farewell followed by cremation (a 30-minute visitation before cremation)

• A Memorial Service, without a visitation, with or without the urn present

• A Visitation for family and friends, without a funeral service, followed by cremation

• A Traditional Funeral Service, including a Visitation and Funeral Service, followed by cremation.

Options for My Loved One’s Cremains

An urn is a container designed to hold cremated remains. We have a wide selection of urns available to reflect the lifestyle and personality of an individual. Many urns can be personalized by engraving and come in a variety of sizes, which allows for more than one member of the family to have a portion of the cremated remains. Although many families prefer to keep the urn at home, other options include:

• Burial: An urn containing the cremated remains can be buried in an existing cemetery plot or a new plot may be purchased. Some urns are eco-friendly and biodegrade once buried.

• Inurnment: An urn containing the cremated remains may be placed in a niche in an above ground structure called a columbarium. Cemeteries will usually coordinate the marker for the niche.

• Shipping: You may wish for the cremated remains to be shipped to another state. Allen Brothers Mortuary can assist you in obtaining any documentation required for shipment and can handle the shipping for you, at your request.

• Scattering: Please ask your Funeral Director about scattering restrictions and requirements for your local area. Allen Brothers Mortuary can help with arrangements for scattering at sea or by air, with or without the family present. Scattering at sea or by air can be done with your choice of urn; however, if you plan to bury the urn at sea, you must use a biodegradable urn.
