Key of Db major (Bb or minor)

Note: This scale can also be called C# major (A# minor) and is spelled “C# D# E# F# G# A# B#”. However, since the note E# sounds as an “F” and the note B# sounds as a “C”, it is less confusing to simply switch to calling the scale Db major, which uses less accidentals.

G major (E minor) pentatonic scale

This diagram shows you the complete fretboard of notes for the best-known scale to many guitarists – the E minor “box” pentatonic scale. As we saw above G major = E minor, so this is also the G major pentatonic scale.

See if you can spot the famous ‘box’ shape at the open position! This repeats exactly at the 12th fret (although the diagram only goes to fret 14, the shape repeats there!)

Note:

In order to keep the diagrams as clearly ‘printable’ as possible, they are provided in black and white only - printing out shades of color results in muddy looking diagrams on many printers, and obscures the notes. Hence, you may find it useful to print them out, and then highlight the roots in a particular color.

For instance, highlight (or get out the old Crayola crayons!) the major note roots in yellow, and the minor note roots in blue. This actually makes an excellent exercise, as you must find all the root notes to do this. This type of practice will help you see where the notes fall on the fretboard. Example: For the “C major / A minor scale” diagram, highlight all “C” notes in yellow, and all “A” notes in blue. Please check back at our Guitar Q&A for more lessons, tips, and ideas!
