Original System Design

• Guiding principles:– Do not reinvent the wheel– Users must perceive only one environment– ICT literacy must no be a limitation

• Critical issues:– Video bandwidth. Both for live and on

demand.– Availability

Page 33: Using Cloud Computing to Support Virtual Congress Juan G. Lalinde-Pulido jlalinde@eafit.edu.co

Original System Design

• Selected tools:– Cloud based video services– Drupal– Moodle– MediaWiki– MySQL

Page 34: Using Cloud Computing to Support Virtual Congress Juan G. Lalinde-Pulido jlalinde@eafit.edu.co

Too successful, evolve

• Three days before starting: 4000 users

• Solution: Evolve

• Key concepts:– Load balancing– Preserve sessions– Synchronize servers– Use HTML properties (RESTful orientation)

Conclusions

• Scalability is a must. We were lucky!• Problematic situations to avoid:

– Data stored in local file systems– Multiple ids – multiple sessions

• Open issues:– Chat with multiple users

• We are currently developing from scratch a cloud compatible application
