  • Wales is renowned for its poets andwriters. People the world over haveheard of Dylan Thomas, thoseinterested in Celtic myth and heritagemay very well have heard of the quasihistoric poet Taliesin – though fewmight understand his work completelyin its original form these days. Todaywe have a flourishing literary landscape. We have our own national poet inGwyneth Lewis and Welsh writersfeature highly of the author lists of themajor English language publishinghouses of the world. Poetry slams andreadings are regular occurrences intowns and villages the length andbreadth of the country and the passingon of the traditional and unique poeticform of ‘cynghanedd’ has undergone arenaissance in recent years. In Wales

we revere our bards and writers, andmaintain the ancient tradition ofcrowning or ‘chairing’ the best Welshlanguage practitioners every year at theNational Eisteddfod in truly colourfuland memorable ceremonies.

More and more visitors are planningtheir trips around festivals and events, making ‘event tourism’ a major growtharea. There’s a huge choice in Wales, from major festivals like Brecon Jazz, the Llangollen International MusicalEisteddfod, the National Eisteddfod andthe Royal Welsh Show to local craftfairs, and the use of costumed guides athistorical properties.

All of this is part of Sense of Place. Itneeds to be communicated to visitors;local artists and performers need to beinvited to create closer links with theindustry and with visitors so that theirexperience of this colourful country ismade richer and more enjoyable.
