Your Action Plan
1. Your first step should be to hear this lick in context. Iactually stole it (some would say borrowed) fromPino Palladino. He uses this exact lick on the JohnMayer track 'Good Love Is On The Way' (Live in LA).It's a fantastic track and can be found on YouTube sono need to go and buy it (although I recommendbuying the entire album to be honest as it's one ofmy personal favorites!). I'm not going to tell youwhere it is, as I want you to find it for yourself, but I'llgive you a clue. It's after the guitar solo.
2. Your second step should to master the lick from thelesson. Make sure you can play it smoothly atmultiple speeds and with good muting making sureyou're not getting any unwanted string noise. Learnthe lick in multiple keys so you can get used toplaying it in the different areas of the neck. This willgive you the ability to play it over other chords, notjust C major. In fact in the tutorial I demonstrate howyou can use the same lick over the Bb major chordwithin the groove.

3. Step three is a transcription exercise. I want you totake the John Mayer track 'Good Love is on the Way'and transcribe at least two other licks that Pino playsduring the song. There are some great ones tochoose from at the end when the trio is jamming out.I should point out that transcription is one of themost important things I ever worked on as a bassplayer. If I had to put a percentage against howimportant I think it was, I would say it contributed toover 50% of why I sound like I do right now. So, ifyour not transcribing on a regular basis I recommendyou start straight away.
