Captain's thoughts......

Time is flying by at warp speed. I feel as if the pages in my log book have been opened by the wind and

strewn about the galaxy……I am proud of what we have accomplished so far this year on the Gorkon. The

crew is growing and each person brings his/her unique gifts and talents to our ship. We have many plans

on the horizon for next year already. One of our major events will be the new Star Trek movie. Right now

there is no release date but we are hoping it will be done before the end of next year (2012). It was due to

be released in June 2012 but the date is pushed back due to JJ Abrams “Super 8” film taking longer pro-

duction time than expected. Also, the writers are still writing the script for the Star Trek sequel. The good

news is all of the actors are committed for returning to film the sequel that were in the last movie. Mr.

Abrams being the outstanding director that he is; promises to make a movie that yet again will surpass our

expectations. His dedication to making a quality product is evident in his resistance to rushing to meet a

deadline. This being said, the USS Gorkon crew will be standing ready to implement the next Star Trek

Movie Premier project. We already have many ideas and will be meeting with the key people involved to

begin planning this big event. But, we cannot do this alone. We need all of the fleet support we can get if

FADM Jackson will give his approval. We hope that all our sister ships will come and be a part of this spe-

cial event. As the time grows nearer we will be contacting various ship Captains and asking for your crews

support. We know that we will be seeking as many people as we can get to be in uniform. So, if those who

do not already have a uniform could work toward getting one that would be of great help. We will also be

asking for assistance from the Klingons to come and support this as well. If you have questions or sugges-

tions for this project please contact Commander Clara Trout at [email protected]

Greetings and salutations, to whom it may concern, once upon a time and all that jazz. Currently I am still

settling in to the First Officer (FO) position and trying to figure out all of my duties. The FO seems to get the

butt of the joke on most occasions. In one Star trek Spoof the first officer is defined as: The first to jump up,

strike a pose and yell "RED ALERT". Deanna Troi once ribbed Will Riker as saying that she may go out for

FIRST OFFICER as she hears that the qualifications are not that difficult or demanding.

Since I first received my orders to a crew such as this, I have been learning the ways of the Klingon, Klin-

gon weaponry, attempting to speak Klingon, etc. Now that's just one part of me. In another exchange of

knowledge between races, I have been chosen to receive the powers of the Q continuum so that both races

may learn from the other. This was based on an idea by Amanda Rogers who was born to Two Qs pretend-

ing to be human. When the Enterprise-D encountered Q, his orders were to train her to be Q or destroy her

(as they did her parents). She has since convinced the Continuum to study the good of the Human race, or

at least their self control and discipline. The Q formerly known as Amanda Rogers has personally bestowed

the powers of Q upon me herself and has welcomed me into the Continuum.

I have no limitations on my power. Starfleet thinks I should only use it for their gain and otherwise keep it

suppressed. Overall, I'm at liberty to do with it as I wish, according to my principles and will. Currently, Star

Fleet has appointed me to be Front Line Defense against the Borg. I said I would not take a life unless in

extreme circumstances, and I would definitely not commit genocide against any race, including the

Borg. However I have no problem continually sending them back across the universe to where they came

from. Eventually they will tire of making the same long trip repeatedly and just stay home NOW, The ques-

tion has been posed to me..."CAN I HEAL THE BORG and restore them to what they were?" My answer is

"YES, with help. But wouldn't that violate the Prime Directive?"

REAL LIFE: I did meet OLIVIA D'ABO who thought my story based on her Star Trek character was awesome.

She did welcome me to the Continuum and complimented me on my Uniform. I will be assisting with props

and pieces, but GL (Cadet Michael Parks) is still trying to get the replicators to work.

readers read this...it will be complete. We hope you enjoy the USS Gorkon newsletter and find it informative

and interesting..

Also, we are working on an overhaul of the USS Gorkon website. We are looking forward to making it inter-

active, fun and informative.

Ship records are up to date and in order.

Check out the Starfleet store and see the new selection of products. Remember Christmas is only 4

months away! Do you know what you are going to give your to your favorite Captain this year? (smile) One

of the best parts about the store is the fact that the proceeds go to Autism. Many of the items were given

out as door prizes during mid-year fleet meeting. I can personally vouch that all the items I saw were of very

good quality and everyone seemed to appreciate their prizes they received.

Plan to “Boldly Go” for retirement?

Yes. Seeing how that I am now the Chief of security for the Gorkon I have been tasked to write an article for

my station. So recently I searched online for something in this field. Instead this is what I have to report.

Can you believe that Star Trek and social security are beaming together to a transporter pad near you?

Holy transporter malfunction! With social security possibly being out of reach for many citizens in our coun-

try, it sounds beyond this galaxy. Forget the transporter we‟ll need to go into time warp. So to help promote

social security, our very own George Takei from the original series has teamed up with Patty Duke (1960‟s

sitcom star). Go Sulu! There is a series of commercials using Star Trek humor to gain a wide audience for

national attention. There is even one that makes fun of Kirk. Maybe the government should also do one

with a Star Wars theme too. “May the Force Be with You”. LOL! So climb aboard the starship USS WEB and

travel through cyberspace for help with SSI or disability benefits. Warp speed to www.socialsecurity.gov.

Hello my name is Chris Danford Chief Engineer of the U.S.S. Gorkon. I am going to be comparing the IPAD

vs. the IPAD 2 specs and speed wise. The original IPAD size 9.56 x 7.47 x 0.5 inches with a 9.7-inch high

definition touch screen that can produce resolutions of 800x600 to 768x1024 pixels and nothing has

changed with the IPAD 2 in that aspect. On the other hand, speed and information processing has changed

a lot between the two. The IPAD 1 only came with 256 MB of R.A.M while the IPAD 2 comes with 512 MB of

R.A.M, (R.A.M, Random access memory), for you electronic newbies in the group. Going back to the IPAD 1

the possessor is a 1GHZ single core A4 ,(A4 meaning the model of the processor), while the IPAD 2 comes

with a 1 GHZ duel core A5 ,(GHZ, gigahertz), which has the capacity to thread multiple programs or applica-

tions at the same time without sacrificing speed. How this is done is, it allows the processor to split the

burden over two cores instead of the entire burden on one single core which in turn allows for greater proc-

ess speeds. Nothing much has changed in the storage memory. IPAD 1 or IPAD 2 they are still available in

16GB/32GB/64GB of drive space. The connections haven‟t changed still the usual Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, op-

tional AT&T 3G not much but the IPAD 2 adding Verizon, to its arsenal, and with the IPAD 2 apple has added

cameras when the original IPAD had none a 720p rear, VGA on the front. Sensors is another innovation to

the IPAD 2 the original IPAD only had a Accelerometer, Ambient light sensor but the IPAD 2 has an Acceler-

ometer, Ambient light sensor, 3-axis gyro, a gyro which senses direction of the pad allowing the screen to

flip to the direction it is facing so the screen will always be right side up… so to speak and that concludes

my report on the IPAD 1 vs. the IPAD 2.

What an exciting few months we‟ve had! Just this past month they have seen clear evidence of what looks

like some sort of liquid, most likely water, flowing on the surface of Sol‟s fourth planet, Mars. Clear inden-

tions that appear to be gullies formed by flowing liquid have been observed in a location that previously did

not have these gullies! Obviously the importance of water on any planet is the ability to utilize it in its natu-

ral form of water for survival, and by splitting the molecule we can produce oxygen for breathing and hydro-

gen for energy. Colonization of the Red Planet has taken another step forward.

Terrans, or Earthlings, as they like to be called, have finally realized that they can‟t ignore the garbage that

they‟ve put into orbit around their homeworld, and have begun planning for various orbital missions that

would strap small rockets on the larger pieces of trash, i.e., spent rockets and other large debris, and push-

ing them out of orbit to burn up in Terra‟s atmosphere. Granted, this will make housekeepers upset by

producing more dust, but the overall impact of clearing up various orbits around the planet is well worth the

nuisance.

The theory of multiple bubble universes has advanced one step closer to reality as scientist have observed

variations in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), which is the faint glow of energy left over from the

Big Bang. Theoretical physicists calculated that variations in energy would occur if a bubble universe

“bumped” into our own bubble universe, but theory appears to be reality as these variations have actually

been observed. As stated in our previous newsletter by our Security Chief, “Mirror Mirror” may be reality!

On both a sad yet exciting note, the last of Terra‟s original space shuttles, Atlantis, landed after a successful

mission to Terra‟s International Space Station (ISS). The fleet of shuttles have been flying into orbit rou-

tinely for almost three decades, and the first shuttle shares its name to a long line of prestigious surface

and starships, the Enterprise. Of interest, this particular shuttle, built in the mid „70s, was designed purely

to test the ship‟s gliding capabilities, and did not contain engines or a heat shield. As sad as this event may

be, it will rocket (no pun intended) Terra‟s space exploration forward, as the Terran nations look towards

private industry to create orbital systems to replace the shuttle. This will free governmental space agencies

to concentrate on actual space missions beyond Terra‟s orbit. Commercially ran spacecrafts have tradition-

ally been the subject of science fiction and fantasy, but in the VERY near future, it will be reality! This is

extremely exciting for space exploration.

Speaking of space, due to unique alignment of Terra with respect to Sol‟s asteroid belt and meteoroids,

September‟s sunrise will have a little twist. These meteoroids reflect and refract light, and their unique

alignment in September will create a false sunrise up to two hours before the real sunrise. So if later in

September you find yourself awake well before dawn, grab a cup of Terran coffee, throw on a sweater, and

head out and look East; you might see a little light reflection from deep space.

Cadet “Krog” Leatherwood, Chief Science Officer.

In preparation for becoming Chief Medical Officer aboard the ship I have refreshed my medical training and

am amazed how much has changed in first aid in the last 10 years.

When I was in high school they taught us first aid as part of health class, and though it‟s been quite some

time since then, taking it again brought back some memories and questions that interested me in just how

much things have changed.

As far as CPR, it has gone from 5 & 2, (5 chest compressions and 2 breaths) to 10 & 2, and now it‟s 30 &2.

Plus the rate of speed to keep these rotations up has also increased. As when I was younger they didn‟t

stress the speed you must do this to mimic the actual heart beat, now they tell you have to do this under 60

seconds. It is also now different depending on age and size of an individual. As where when I was a kid it

was 10 7 2 for all now for a small child you use only 1 hand not 2 and repeat the 30 & 2 cycle. And with

infants only 2 fingers are used for the chest compressions.

Another thing they stress is universal precautions, which is the use of gloves and a mouth guard. The first

time I took this class such things were unheard of.

Like CPR the Heimlich maneuver is now different depending on size of a person. And where once a slap on

the back was acceptable they now tell you not to, but the basic maneuver is still the same, you should take

care with pregnant women and infants.

Burn treatment is now much simpler as in the best and only first aid treatment is to keep pouring cold wa-

ter over the wound and seek professional help. Do NOT use butter, tooth paste. Or whatever old home rem-

edy you might have heard most of them only make it worse.

One of the new things is now we are trained on an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) which shocks the

heart back into rhythm. Where this was once only available to hospital personnel technology has made

them smarter, more compact, and more affordable. This advancement now makes them more readily avail-

able and more accessible to save lives.

First aid has come a long way in the last decade, and that is a good thing because the more we learn the

better we are at saving lives.

The summoning to the office of the Starbase was not on either one of their minds when they were greeted at

the landing bay by Starfleet Marines. The marines normally do not escort personnel unless it is either impor-

tant, or they are about to see what a brig is used for. Entering the office, they both sound off with their

names and ranks. "Captain K'Rad Makura, LCDR K'Lara Makura reporting for duty, SIR." Returning the salute

he points for them to sit down, and respecting his silent request, proceed to sit down in the chairs provided

for them.

"I been looking over both of your records, and I have a few changes I am going to make, one is that as of to-

day LCDR K'Lara you are brevetted to full Commander and assigned to USS GORKON. The GORKON should

be arriving in the next couple of days. I would like you to leave now; I have other business to attend to with

your Chief Medical Officer, and congratulations for your promotion and your new command."

K'Lara looks over her new orders, and smiles as if she has been given an old friend, who she has known be-

fore, a very long time ago. Standing up and nodding in respect to him, she turns and leaves the office.

RADM Bartle rises up and heads to his table in his office. He uncorks a bottle of Klingon Blood wine and

pours two large glasses. He walks back to K'Rad and sits down and begins his briefing. "I am in a quagmire; I

have lost 3 ships since I have been here. I have ENDEAVOR, HALSEY, and ADVENTURE dry docked, going

thru a refit and RELIANT off in deep space. I don't have a lot of combat options, and I also need a very tacti-

cal First Officer with experience and knowledge.

RADM Bartle stands and walks over to the screen and lights up the tactical display of all his ship's and sus-

pected Breen, Hydrian, and Nausicaans positions. As K'Rad looks at the tactical display, he notices a Klingon

outpost and a large number of ship positions as well.

"Admiral, what is the status of Klingons in this area?"

RADM Bartle sits back down, sighs and says, "They have not been much help in this area. They have for the

most part have been staying away and not assisting in any way what so ever. The Brigadier General there is

very "one-minded" when it comes to the Federation, and only in rare cases has assisted, and one of those

cases have been when a Omega Particle has been detected. So this brings me to why I sent for you with

K'Lara and the GORKON. You have vast experience handling the Klingons and with the Omega directives.

Looking over the tactical again, K'Rad says, "Gary, we need to have more say with the Klingons, I know that the

Makura's ship WOLFPACK is expected to arrive today to their outpost as their replacement, I could go over

there and have a few words with the General and give him a very good reason to work with us. It is the Breen/

Nausicaans ship's that worry me right now, they are building fast, and if we don't deal with that soon, we might

lose more than a few ships in this region."

K'Rad stands up and looks over this display again, "Gary I accept your offer, I would be honored to serve under

you as your First Officer, but I need to leave here to handle the first problem. I will then return with a better

relationship with our Klingon allies, but right now I need to find out more about this area. I believe if I were

them, I would be preparing for a battle in that sector.”

He points to the board display. “I suggest you send this ship a flash message on this channel, drop my name,

and they will give you all the information in that sector you need, I know that Klingon Brell class ship Com-

manding Officer, he is the best recon man in the Empire. Believe me, if there is something there, he will find

it."

Walking out of the office, K'Rad only says, "Great deeds, Great songs my brother."

The GORKON pulls into the Starbase docking area, mooring lines light up to the ship, holding her into position.

Lara Makura and staff beam onto the ship. A line of senior and junior officers are lined up, one on each side,

and the Command staff are standing at attention at the end of the line, waiting for the new Captain as she

walks toward them,

" Welcome aboard Captain Makura, I am Scotty Q, your new First officer, and I do believe you know Zen.”

The Captain nods at her First Officer and to Zen. She notices that her Chief Medical Officer is not present as

she walks with her new command staff and they enter the meeting room near the bridge.

Captain Bryan Detamore, long time Captain and member of the USS Gorkon, has been officially

transferred to his new post as First Officer of Starbase 6 (SB06). For several months Captain

Detamore has been performing dual duties as Chief Medical Officer on the USS Gorkon and doing

the duties of SB06 First Officer.

Captain Detamore has been both the Commanding Officer and Chief Medical Officer of the USS

Gorkon during his 19 years in Star Trek Fandom.

His leadership aboard the Gorkon has inspired many of the crew and he is a shining example of

what Starfleet represents. He has also recruited many individuals due to his enthusiasm and

good deeds. Although he will be missed, we look forward to his further success at Starbase 6.

The crew of the Gorkon wishes him fair winds and following seas.

This next one is from Deep Space Nine as well, where Worf is

drinking with Kor, and they decide to go after the Sword of
