    2000 1521 BC: Native Indians inhabited the Virgin Islands and let their mark on

    places like the Ree Bay Trail in St. John1493: Christopher Columbus sailed into Salt River on St. Croix, claiming the islands or

    Spain and renaming it Santa Cruz

    1580-1670 : The USVI was settled by Holland, France, England, Spain, Denmark andthe Knights o Malta

    1672: The Danes established the frst successul settlement on St. Thomas

    1685: A treaty with the Dutch o Brandenburg established St. Thomas as a slave-trading post

    1687: The Danish West India and Guinea Company acquired St. John and was settled in 1694

    1733: St. Croix was added to the Danish West India and Guinea Company

    ST. CROIxWhim Plantation Museum With its originalearly 18th Century plantation buildingscovering 12 acres o land, it is the oldest sugarplantation museum in the Virgin Islands. Theully restored windmill and sugar actory ruinsare open or you to explore. You can seesugar cane growing nearby in one o theplantation gardens.

    Buddhoe Park On July 3, 1848, GeneralBuddhoe Gottleib rallied more than 6,000armed slaves at this park to demand reedom.

    As a result, Governor Peter von Scholtenproclaimed the emancipation o the slaves onthis day. Located next to Fort Frederik Museumin Frederiksted, the park contains a bronze busto the renowned slave rebellion leader.

    Lord God o Saboath Lutheran Church Built in the 1740s, this Lutheran Church isSt. Croixs oldest extant church. Originally theDutch Reormed Church, it was transerred tothe Lutheran Congregation in 1831, which isnow the Steeple Building. The most distinctiveeature is the neoclassical tower, built in 1834and designed by Albert Lovmand, the oicial

    Architect o the Danish Coloni es at th e time.

    Holy Cross Catholic Church Originally builtin 1755, Holy Cross was extensively altered inthe 1850s. It was built in the shape o a crossto represent St. Croix, which means holycross in French. It is located on Queen Streetin Christiansted.

    Annaber g Suga r Mill Ruins Is one o severalo St. Johns plantations owned in the 1720sand 1730s by Frederick Moth, the irst Danish

    Governor o St. Croix and, later, the GovernorGeneral o the Danish West Indies. By theearly 19th century, Annaberg, one o St. Johnsbiggest sugar producers, also producedmolasses and rum or export.

    The Emmaus Mor avian Church Locatedin Coral Bay, the church is on the List oRegistered Historic Places in the United States

    Virgin Islands and ho lds an interesting placein St. Johns history. It was the only churchallowed to minister to the slaves and wasinstrumental in establishing Dutch Creole asthe language spoken between planters andthe enslaved Aricans.     Beracha Veshalom Vegmiluth HasidimSynagogue Built in 1796 by Sephardic Jews,the St. Thomas Synagogue is one o the oldestsynagogues in the Western Hemisphere. Peopleo all aiths are welcome to visit the sand-fooredinterior o this National Historic Landmark.

    St. Thomas Reormed Church The churchwas established around 1660, and is one othe oldest congregations in the Virgin Islands.

    Organized by Dutch traders as the St. ThomasProtestant Reormed Dutch Church, the rstchurch was built in the mid-1670s on thesavannah east o the Fort in the area knownas Barracks Yard. In the 1740s a new churchwas built on Snegle Gade, which burned in1804. A new church was immediately erected,but was again destroyed by re in 1806. Thecornerstone o the present church was laidSeptember 18, 1844, and completed andconsecrated on February 8, 1848.

    Frederick Lutheran Church Builtcombination o neo-classical and garchitecture, this historic church reto its original character. Gracious stan arched doorway greet visitors.
