Air Vanuatu flies to the capital from Auckland, Brisbane, and Sydney as well as to Pacific regional destinations of Nadi, Suva, Noumea and Honiara (either with its own aircraft or on codeshare services).
From the capital, the airline flies to 28 domestic ports within Vanuatu.
Joseph Laloyer, chief executive officer with Air Vanuatu, says the carrier operates two ATR aircraft, including a brand new ATR 72-600 on the domestic routes, plus a fleet of Twin Otters.
He says Air Vanuatu is increasingly using Espiritu Santo and Tanna as ‘sub-hubs’.
From Espiritu Santo, popular destinations are the Banks and Torres Islands, while other easy to reach northern islands include Ambae and Maewo. From Tanna, in the south, travellers can carry on to islands such as Futuna
and Erromango.Joseph says the islands are well worth
discovering. ‘It is much easier to get around the islands than people think. Sometimes they just put it in the too hard basket without researching or talking to travel agents.
‘It is well worth making just a bit of effort to see more of Vanuatu.’
He says everything from the land diving in Pentecost (renowned as the original home of bungy), the underwater experiences off Espiritu Santo and other islands, and the volcano (Mt Yasur) of Tanna will keep visitors busy.
However he puts discovering culture as the number one attraction. ‘It is a living culture, it’s not just a show for tourists. The people are authentic, genuine and friendly.
‘You won’t get bored in Vanuatu but if you feel like just chilling out by a pool or on the beach you can do that too.’

Timmy Rovu started his tour operation in 1991 with a taxi. Now Santo Heritage Tours has eight custom designed vehicles (seven 15 seaters and one 22 seater) plus two 4WD double cab options for the more adventurous and is regarded as among the most reliable transport operators on the island.
Timmy’s son Henry (who is one of the drivers with the company) says Heritage’s most popular trip is its exclusive Tim’s Secret Snorkelling Tour, which takes guests onto private land and includes a visit to nearby Champagne Beach.
Well utilised is the Santo Highlights Tour that heads out of the main town of Luganville to visit a coconut site where the coconuts are cut and the copra (white flesh) is dried and sent to the mill for coconut oil. Guests then visit Port Olry where they can relax and swim, before heading to a clear fresh water hole (for another swim).
Also on offer are a Millennium Cave Tour, Santo Cultural Village and a WWII relics tour.
The company has airport transfers to hotels around Espiritu Santo, and a hire car fleet.

Its spacious environment means the resort easily caters for families, couples, weddings and business events.
General manager Steve Frichot says Iririki is a ‘multi-faceted’ resort with different areas to suit each market. ‘For example we have a family area around the sunset pool with apartment accommodation, a kids club and games room.
‘On the other hand we also have water front and over water farés that honeymooners and other couples looking for a romantic get-away really love. And then we have a specially built wedding faré on the top of the island.’
Regarded as one of the more luxurious options in Port Vila, Iririki Island Resort & Spa has recently undergone a complete refurbishment that has seen all eight different accommodation types upgraded and every guest room receiving brand new furniture.
Iririki Spa is also brand new and offers an extensive menu of luxurious treatments with the support of Thalgo skincare products. Located at the highest point of the island, the spa offers breathtaking harbour views for guests as they are being pampered.
Steve says an important part of Iririki’s operation is its sustainability, including its recent move to full solar power.

Ramada Resort Port Vila, opening in April 2017, provides the destination with a new type of accommodation that consists mainly of junior suites.
General manager Eduardo Queipo says the new-build resort is attracting plenty of interest, with bookings already coming though from Australia and New Zealand as a result of the efforts of Coconuts Marketing.
‘We’re expecting the hotel to be popular with business travellers and vacationers and we are working on how to share facilities with guests from (sister property) Chantilly’s and vice versa.’
Ramada will open with 67 junior suites, eight studios and five two-bedroom units. It is a 15 minute walk into town but for those who want to stay put it will have a supermarket on site. Other facilities include a full restaurant (Melanesian and Polynesian flavours incorporated into international cuisine), a sports bar with large TV screens, and a lounge bar.
A swimming pool with swim up bar and an activities centre offering kayaks and other water options will also open in April. Queipo says an outdoor spa and a chapel are in the plans for late 2017.

Nasama Resort
Nasama Resort has extended its reception area to better cater for arriving and departing guests now that the resort itself has grown in terms of rooms and guest numbers.
Mathilde Assouad, resort manager, says the check in process in particular is an important part of the guest experience at Nasama. ‘We take time with our guests at check in – about 15 minutes generally. We want to understand them and have them understand what they can do here during their holiday. We talk about tours, attractions, activities, how they can get around using the local buses and other things. We don’t just hand them the key.’
Mathilde describes Nasama as being somewhere between a boutique hotel and a resort – especially since it added extra room inventory and a popular restaurant, the Café Vila, about two years ago. ‘We have self
contained apartments, but at the same time we have all the facilities people expect at a resort – pool, barbecue, massage by the beach, a full tour desk and more.’
Nasama Resort now has a total of 43 apartments, offering three room types – beach view studio, seaview two bedroom, and luxury oceanview suite.
Mathilde says Nasama has plenty to keep guests entertained – from kayaking, snorkeling or island hopping to simply relaxing and soaking up the sun by the pool or beach (or on their own balcony).
‘Inexpensive public transport at the resort entrance provides guests easy access to shops, restaurants, local produce and souvenir markets, duty free shopping, major banks and more. Our front desk can assist with any reservations, and organise tours or baby sitting on request.’

reputation for catering to weddings, with its location right on the waterfront, a white sandy foreshore, spacious private lawns (and spectacular sunsets). Island Magic Resort consists of 18 spacious self contained bungalow style apartments, each with private outdoor decks, fully equipped kitchens and a number of other features. The TerracesLaying claim to being the most contemporary
accommodation in Vanuatu, The Terraces opened about three years ago.
Its main pool, overlooking the Erakor Lagoon, is one of its most spectacular features, as are the private plunge pools on the decks of the one and two bedroom apartments (studios are also available).
Co-owner Michelle Clements points out that guests can dine in-room or head to the adjacent (and highly regarded) Mangoes Restaurant.
‘We have complimentary yoga once or twice a week and we can organise tennis lessons for our guests,’ Michelle adds.
The Terraces, which welcomes children over the age of five, is a 10 minute walk through tracks and roads from town (get the map from reception) or a 500V taxi, or 150V bus. ‘We are close to the hustle and bustle, but not right in it, so people get the best of both worlds.’Mangoes see page 30

more luxurious end of the market has led to the decision to add two more premium villas to the boutique resort.
The two new villas, opening 2017, will both be two bedroom and be slightly larger than the existing offerings, with a refreshed design and layout. Both will have private plunge pools.
Eratap co-manager Pascalle Russett says the 12-villa resort is popular with honeymooners (it has dedicated honeymoon villas) and the availability of plunge pools in these and two other villas has met with big demand.
The resort is, as the name suggests, situated on the peninsula of Eratap, six kilometres off the main round island road. The rate includes airport transfers, a daily tropical a la carte breakfast and day activities such as bush walks, village tours, bicycles, paddle boards and snorkelling.

Visitors to Vanuatu’s markets will quickly see the range of
fresh produce available to restaurants in the destination
Increasingly, this fresh food is being incorporated into menus, often grown by the restaurant or hotel itself and harvested fresh before reaching the table that day.
Establishments are also embracing the cooking styles of the local Ni-Vanuatu people, often serving western favourites with a Vanuatu twist or even bringing traditional meals out of the village and onto the restaurant plate.
You can still find a western barbecue,
authentic Italian pizza or an American diner style burger among other things, but you’ll also notice items like local soups, island style fish and meals flavoured with local herbs and spices on the menu.

(there is also a boutique resort) rewards diners with a restaurant by the water – accentuated when guests take a seat in the decked al fresco area.
The restaurant is reputed to be the second oldest in Port Vila and the chefs are long stayers, while the menu includes items such as organic Vanuatu pork served on kumara mash with orange and maple syrup, Vila Chaumiéres’ famous coconut crab, and coconut crusted local prawns.

Mezze plates and salads with a tropical touch are available for lunch.

A decision to plant vegetables, fruits and herbs to feed staff after Cyclone Pam has led to a whole new approach to the menu at one of Port Vila’s popular boutique resorts.
Joanne Wade, owner of Poppy’s Lagoon Resort, says ‘every acreage’ was planted with crops and food. ‘We planted paw paw, tomatoes, coriander, island cabbage, grapefruit, lettuces and more. Initially it was so that the staff had food because for six months (after Cyclone Pam in 2015) they could not find anything to eat.’
Joanne says that the resulting meals that were prepared, and a brainstorming session involving the team at Poppy’s, changed her way of thinking when it came to the food being served there.
‘We reopened the restaurant with the type of food they (local staff) love to eat. For example we’ve got Tanna Soup on the menu. It’s delicious and includes stock, a bit of beef, root vegetables and island cabbage, but there is a real knack to it.’

Travellers will never be bored in Vanuatu – no matter how active or adventurous they wish to be. Hoteliers and tour operators in the destination point out that while people usually enjoy a couple of days ‘flopping and dropping and rejuvenating’ they are also keen to get out and discover what Vanuatu has to offer.
Top of the list for many visitors is diving – the superb visibility, warm water and world class dive sites attract experienced and novice divers from all over the world. The biggest drawcard for diving in Vanuatu is the SS President Coolidge, in Espiritu Santo, the largest wreck dive in the world. The 220,000 tonne luxury liner converted to troop ship sank fully laden during the war, just a few metres from the beach.
However, divers will also find underwater cliffs, grottoes, tunnels and abundant sea life.
Fishing is another huge attraction – with options from shared charters, three, four and eight hour day trips, live aboard game fishing,
sightseeing trips, sport fishing charters and more. The catch can include mahi mahi, wahoo, abacore, marlin and other species.
Sailing Vanuatu’s ocean is (literally) a breeze, and tours on offer include day trips, yacht charters on routes within Port Vila harbour or further out in Efate’s coves, lagoons or even in the outer islands. Ocean walking, parasailing and an adventure submarine are among other ocean activity options available.
Anyone who doesn’t mind the possibility of getting a bit muddy will find Off Road Adventures an exciting way to discover Vanuatu. The company offers self drive off-road buggies, all 250cc two seater automatics, with the trips escorted by expert tour guides.

New actvities at Holiday Inn Resort Vanuatu have been successful in showcasing some of the destination’s attributes that people may not immediately think of, says general manager Simon Douthett. ‘On Wednesdays for example, we have a market tour. Our guests can walk through the market in downtown Port Vila, and purchase produce. When they get back we help them cook something local with the food they have bought. And people can try some kava – that works well as part of the experience.’
On Thursdays guests can take part in a local school tour. ‘We show them around and we pre-purchase gifts and stationery in advance so that our guests can give these to the children. So it is a community project as well as an experience and often, especially for families, it is a highlight of people’s trip.’
Holiday Inn Resort Vanuatu has added two themed dinners in the evening as well. On Thursday the Vanua Fire Show combines fire dancing and other ‘hot’ entertainment with
a mixed international buffet that focuses on roasted meats to fit with the fire theme.
Recently introduced on Saturday nights is Night under the Stars, another dinner on the beach with a barbecue theme and local live music.
‘We are progressively putting things in place and we have plans for more events.’
Simon says many people, even in nearby tourism markets, are not fully aware of what Vanuatu has to offer.
‘Not only is it close to Australia and New Zealand, but once people get here everything is easy to experience. People hear about the diving
and the fishing and there is growing awareness of the cultural side of Vanuatu. The Ni Vanuatu culture is so different from what you find anywhere else in the Pacific.’
He says Vanuatu has been promoted as a tropical paradise and deservedly so. ‘But it is more than that, with plenty of different attractions and adventure options.
‘Vanuatu Jungle Zipline is an exciting activity, and we have golf, ropes courses, the river and much more.’

Midway between Luganville and Champagne Beach, the resort is set on set on a 75-acre private island, with native flower gardens and rainforest, and surrounded by coral reefs.

Beach is Port Olry – just as beautiful as its more famous neighbour.
The area has a settlement with little more than a small bank, butcher, Western Union and mini-shop, but for most visitors attention will mainly be on a string of independent bungalows along the beach. They include Port Olry Beach Bungalow and the associated Chez Louis Restaurant and highlights here are the crayfish and the smiling welcome of Sylverio Tiome, one of the owners.
If there is no room at that particular bungalow, other accommodation can be booked through the establishment. Options in the area include Port Olry Tree House Bungalows, Nakome Backpackers, Vaton Beach Bungalows and Little Paradise Bungalows.

The jungle bird fish found at Nanda Blue Hole on Espiritu Santo are aptly named. By a trick of light, reflection and the clear deep waters of the spring, visitors can get the impression the fish are actually swimming in the trees above them.

Each time a cruise ship arrives in Luganville, Espiritu Santo, some 300 to 400 passengers will head to Million Dollar Point to snorkel and dive one of the most unusual underwater attractions in the world – a collection of World War II land vehicles.
The story of how the bulldozers, jeeps, diggers and other equipment (nowadays often referred to as junk) got there is as unusual as their resting place. In 1945 after the war, the United States offered the New Hebrides Government (the country was then run by Britain and France) the chance to buy the vehicles at very low price.

Now the rusting equipment can be seen by swimming out for just a couple of minutes and donning a snorkel. More can be seen deeper out and requires a scuba dive. Even for those who don’t want to get wet, remnants of World War II can be seen on shore.

Champagne Beach – you’re likely to have it to yourself
outside cruise days
It is one of the world’s most famous beaches, but if you travel to Champagne Beach in Espiritu Santo independently (or on a small group tour) you are most likely to have it virtually to yourself.
The big exception is a cruise day, when thousands of people can be found playing volleyball or cricket on the beach, swimming, enjoying the markets that are especially set up for the ship visits, and taking tours to local sights and attractions. The tours and activities are all run by the locals and the funds raised stay in the community, a term that is accepted
by the cruise lines because of the popularity of the port. ‘Having the ship visit Champagne Beach sells the cruise,’ the locals point out.
Outside those days having even 20 people on the beach at one time is unlikely. Despite that it is easy to reach by self-drive (the roads are sealed all the way from Espiritu Santo’s ‘capital’ Luganville) or on a private or scheduled small group tour.
One tip – take a bottle of Champagne, pop it at the beach and enjoy a glass while sitting in the spectacularly blue water. Yes, Champagne at Champagne Beach.

Mike Webb, manager of Tanna Evergreen Resort and Tours says the company now offers 12 tours and only one is dedicated entirely to the volcano. Another, the Tanna Ultimate Safari Tour, is a full day excursion that combines the volcano with snorkelling off a white sandy beach at Port Resolution, a tour through the ash plains and
sulphur and scoria rocks, a visit to a hot water beach, a cultural show and more.
Mike says Evergreen’s tours are all exclusive to the company. For example the Lowinio Primitive Cultural Village Tour (Yakel Tribe) visits specific places and has experiences different to what others who visit the area offer.
‘The volcano is the centre of attraction, there is no denying it. But in the past the island has been marketed almost entirely on the volcano. The idea was to go to Tanna, see the volcano and return to Port Vila. That is changing.’
He says one example of a spectacular yet little known attraction is right out front of Tanna Evergreen. ‘People can swim out to see a giant sea turtle colony that has been here for hundreds of years. People will almost always see four to six

turtles. And we get dugongs out there, dolphins in the winter months and whales that we can see from the deck during the season.’
He says the Giant Sea Turtle & Traditional Canoe Snorkelling Tour run by the resort utilises canoes, which are carved from trees straight off the Evergreen property.
White Grass Ocean Resort, which like Evergreen is close to Tanna’s airport, is also adding reasons for people to extend their stay. Resort manager Sabine Hollerer says White Grass started a PADI dive shop and operation onsite last year.
‘It has been a popular addition. It took a while for people to realise that Tanna now has two dive masters but it is gaining traction now.’
Sabine says Tanna has extensive diving opportunities. ‘We operate 14 sites and have both shore and boat dives.’
The diving is one factor that has helped White Grass extend its average length of stay for guests to three days and like others on the island, she sees promoting activities beyond the Yasur Volcano as the way to do this.
She says the first drawcard for visitors is virtually always the volcano and second is the
Blue Cave (Lemnap), a half day tour that involves a 20-minute boat ride and then a swim under a rock ledge. After that the options are extensive, including village tours, a Black Magic Tour, surf beaches and waterfall safaris.

The province derives its name from the islands of Malekula, Ambrym, and Paama and also includes a number of smaller islands along the coast of Malekula and the uninhabited volcanic island of Lopevi.
Ambrym and Malekula islands are distinctly
different in cultures and landscapes, with Malekula in particular renowned as the most culturally diverse island in Vanuatu.
This, combined with its rugged wilderness and pristine coastlines, makes it an attractive destination.
Travellers to Ambrym Island can access by foot its twin live volcanoes – Mt Benbow (1160m) and Mt Marum (1270). This volcanic island is also known as Vanuatu’s epicentre of ‘black magic’ and the contemporary practice of ancient sorcery.
Melanesian style bungalow and guesthouse accommodations are available on both islands.
Paama Island is a new addition to Malampa’s tourist trail and is regarded as a place for visitors to consider in the future.

Trekking in malekula
Malekula has always been Vanuatu’s hot spot for anthropologists and linguists and its variety of attractions and tours gives the visitor a window into the island’s ancient and diverse customs.
A 15 minute flight from Luganville (Espiritu Santo) or 50 minutes from Port Vila, its big attractions include the Big Nambas and Smol Nambas Tribes. These are the ancient people of Malekula – the men wear the distinctive nambas: penis sheaths made of banana and pandanas leaves.
Several cultural tours are available, such as Big Nambas Day Tour at Mae, where visitors experience traditional dance, the playing of the tam-tam (slit gong), observe the artistry of sand drawing, visit cannibal sites, and learn about their customs.
Visitors will find several options for trekking adventures, often the final decision will be dependent on fitness level and time. There is a day walk up Losinwei waterfall and cascade, through to the longer five-day, four-night Manbush Trail from the East to West Coast. The latter trek takes visitors through verdant rain forest and over the highlands, with the rare opportunity for trekkers to experience first-hand day-to-day living in the villages
along the trail. If aquatic activities appeal, a day trip
snorkelling at Uri Island should be on a Malekula itinerary. The marine reserve is home to schools of colourful fish, giant clams, turtles and occasionally the elusive dugong.
For visitors with the luxury of time, a trip south to the remote group of islands known as the Maskelynes is well worth the effort. Most visitors do the four-day Outrigger Island canoe adventure - including a side trip to Gaspard Bay, with sighting a dugong ‘guaranteed’.

In the villages, ancient custom is part of everyday living. The ‘Man blong Majik’ are treated with the utmost respect and continue to practice ancient sorcery and magic. In addition to trekking the volcanoes, visitors to Ambrym can view the carved wooden tam-tams, sand drawing, custom masked dances and festivals.
The most striking Ambrym dance is the Rom dance. It is held each year in northern Ambrym and is followed by a pig killing ceremony. Traditionally it has been an exclusively male event and kept secret. The Rom masks and headdresses are complex and colourful. Immediately at the
end of the dance the costumes are destroyed so the spirits won’t haunt the dancers.
The craft of intricate sand drawing is also found in Ambrym. The most skilled artists draw continuously without lifting their finger until the symmetrical design is complete. Originally sketched to illustrate an animal or person in a story being told, the finished pictogram may represent a turtle, a canoe or a human face. Today, sand drawings are more often used to leave a message.
The most recent tour addition is the Lake Lolwolwol Tour to one of the few fresh water lakes in Vanuatu. This new attraction offers a great day relaxing in a cool and stunning bush location with a restaurant overlooking the lake – you can even get a cold beer. There are also natural thermal springs along the coast (Terter Hotsprings Bungalows) close to Craig Cove where trampers can relax and rejuvenate after their volcano adventures.

A 45 minute flight from Port Vila, the mysterious volcanic island of Ambrym offers trekking enthusiasts some great options. These combine with kastom cultural experiences to make it an adventurous and culturally rich outer-island experience.
