INTRODUCTION

Home Rarden orch:trds ArC developing acrO!S the Canadian Prairies. A considerable proportion of the people planting nnd lending tree fruite seek information 88 to the origin and general features of their subjects. Comment is given here On most of the varieties prominent at the present time. Doubtle6S there are several seores of ather named vSTiet.ic8 that. are producing ulIcful fruite in some Jocaliti{'!l. The aim of the notes that follow is to lI.~sist. homemakers in gaining a fuller inti~acy with the fruits they cultivate.

The information supplied relates to the origin, the general character of tree, and fruit.. Unless otherwise atated, the SCMcn of a ,"ariely is for those locali ties with climatic conditions resembling Morden, Manitoba.

Multitudes of addi tional young seedlings are coming into bearing acrosa the three Prairie Provinces each year. A Ilroportion of them may be expected to \\'in popularity basoo on their behaviour. In time some will replace varieties that now are well reg:mlctl. Each &ecdling is l\ new variety, diffcring much or little from its mother parent in trce and in fruit.

Persons seeking guidance in choice of varietits for their particular district arc directed to the neareat Experimental Farm or Station, to the University, or the Provincial Department of Agriculture. Every fruit gro"l\'CT will benefit from joining the Horticultural Society serving his territory.
