Catch, Snap and Release Jeff Johnson showing off his pike on Father’s Day.

This summer most of the Vasa anglers are enjoying the fun of catching a fish, snapping a photo and returning the fish to the lake to be caught another day. When you have guests visiting, please pass on our

fishing success, and encourage them to “Catch, Snap and Release.” Post your favorite photos on the website in the Fish Story Gallery.

Tom Ryan enjoyed fishing at Vasa this summer with his son Jon and

daughter-in-law Joanne Postlethwaite Ryan.

Carp Fishing Contest The winners of this year’s Carp Fishing Contest were Hunter Rivest (left) and John Kelsey, Jr., taking the title away from Bill and Evan VanArtsen. The team of Hunter and John, won in both categories; most tonnage (heaviest

fish) and the most number of carp caught. These revolving trophies have been going back and forth between these two teams.

Congratulations! Todd and Julie Bengtsson are excited to announce that their son Trevor Bengtsson and Allie Linder are now engaged. The two met in High School and continued their courtship long distance, as they attended college in different states.

Midsommar Karin and Rachael Rivest did a beautiful job this year decorating the Maypole and coordinated the music and dancing, with Roy Borgers on the accordion and Hazel Johnson on the piano. Members from the Viking Lodge (Vasa Order of America) in Flint also joined in the fun.

Jeff & Karl Johnson, Amber Dietrich, Erik Johnson, Jon, Joanne & Tom Ryan, with Jim Erlandson looking forward to a delicious dinner.

To make things easier this year, we hired ACE Catering from Metamora who prepared a delicious traditional Scandinavian Smörgåsbord.

The Borgers Family dressed in their VCC T-Shirts looked very festive.

This year’s Midsommar Celebration

was dedicated to the memory of Dawn Carlson who recently passed away. Dawn’s musical talents and her love of working with children helped keep our Vasa Midsommar Celebration alive for many years. Dawn would practice the dances and songs with the children days ahead of the Midsommar celebration, helping future generations to keep the Swedish traditions alive. The Carlson family was in full attendance, and participated in the dancing around the Maypole and helping the younger ones learn the traditional Swedish dances.

In 2007 Dawn had spent time working with the Vasa children, many of them Carlson grandchildren, teaching them the Swedish dances and songs for Midsommar.

July 4 Celebration

There was no need to wait until July 4

th to start

catching up with friends you haven’t seen all winter. The Krupsky, Harrington, Powers and Johnson families, plus their friends gathered to enjoy a beautiful sunset on the waterfront the night before. Other than a few uninvited mosquitoes the weekend was off to a good start.

The Ott and Reagan family once again brought their Swedish Pancake frying skills to the Pavilion on the morning of

July 4th, complete with bacon prepared by John

and Linda Postlethwaite. Photo boards prepared for the 80

th Anniversary were on

display to mark the 90th

Vasa Country Club Anniversary. The golf cart parade was underway at 1:00 p.m. with three trophies given.

This year’s golf cart competition was coordinated by Jim Erlandson, and the judges also included Tony Viviano, Chris Powers and

Kurt Hansen. Duane Carlson at the wheel accompanied by his nieces and nephews.

As we all headed for the water to enjoy the annual Sand Bar get together, our caterer was busy getting our dinner ready.

Julie Bengtsson volunteered to make a special cake for our 90

th

Anniversary, which was not only beautiful it was delicious.

A big a thank you to Katrina Brywig, her mother Lou along with Megan Harrington for getting the pavilion

decorated and strung with lights to make the evening look even more festive. With the help of the other Brywig family members and friends, the pavilion has never looked so nice. A shout-out to Kurt Hansen who at the last minute volunteered to purchase extra picnic tables, to accommodate the growing crowd of over 220 diners.

Following dinner a Beer Pong Competition took place for the over 21 set. Steve and Richard friends of the Brywig family took home the Red Solo Cup Trophy.

From your editor Lisa Lagerkvist Johnson: There are so many people who helped make the July 4

th Vasa Country Club 90

th Anniversary

Celebration such a success. From the pancakes in the morning, to set-up and clean-up, the golf cart parade and games on the ball field. It was a day of fun, a time to catch-up with old friends and a day to reminisce about the Vasa we grew-up with, and the Vasa we look forward to sharing with our families in the future.

However, this event wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the VCCCA Board and a number of Vasa families. A special thank you to Gretchen Thomas, for taking all of the reservations and passing out our wristbands. It was no easy task, and we appreciate the time you spent coordinating this. Roy did a wonderful job of playing during the dinner hour, we always enjoy the music. Finally a big thank you to Kelly Thomas for keeping the tunes going all afternoon and into the evening. He even played a number of old Swedish favorites! To the Bengtssons, Brywigs, Borgers, Ericksons, Erlandsons, Harringtons, Henkins, Hansens, Kelseys, Johnsons, Otts, Postlethwaites, Powers’, Reagans, Ryans’, Ruths, Rivests, Thomas’,Vivianos and Woods’ families, thank you for all of your support and help! Most of us have roots in Vasa’s past, and I’m thrilled that you are taking a part in Vasa’s future. Tack!
