Executive Summary

Bus ines s Cas e

SAP is a key enterprise application. It is complex and requires many manual and labor-intensive interventions. SAP environments often require SAP system copies from production to non-production systems that reflect current business data. Today, this is a manual and time-consuming task. The Vblock™ Solution for SAP Management with Tidal simplifies the task and automates the process of a SAP system refresh. It removes the manual labor required, which in turn reduces costs and improves organizational efficiency.

Solution

This solution leverages the Vblock™ Infrastructure Platform, Tidal Enterprise Orchestrator for SAP and EMC Replication Manager to provide an environment and a complete system which automates SAP system refreshes and improves the management, service, and operation of SAP systems.

Tidal Enterprise Orchestrator (TEO) for SAP automates SAP administration, simplifies key IT tasks, and allows them to be viewed within the complete set of a company’s IT processes. It reduces the amount of data that SAP administrators and IT operations must assess, and provides information and tools to manage the application services delivered by SAP. This solution integrates with EMC Replication Manager (RM) to speed up replication without production system disruption. As a result, this solution decreases the number of manual actions that SAP administrators and IT operations must perform in order for their organization to maintain a high degree of operational excellence as required by SAP best practices.

Tida l Enterpris e Orches tra tor for SAP

Tidal Software (a Cisco company) is a leading provider of application automation and incident management software tools. Tidal makes products to enhance applications such as SAP, PeopleSoft, and Oracle E-business.

TEO for SAP provides automation of manual SAP Basis and Operational steps that saves on operating costs in several areas, including:

Automation of manual, repetitive tasks - TEO automates all 26 of SAP’s recommended Daily Admin Checklist for R3/ECC, and also provides a best practice health checklist for BW, EP, and PI. It also automates hundreds of out-of-the-box SLA or KPI reports, saving thousands of hours spent annually doing manual effort that can simply be automated to reduce operating expenses.

Automated troubleshooting of performance-impacting issues - TEO automates the process that formerly an experienced Basis administrator would do when the end user calls come in. Rather than simply tossing an alert into a console and making Operations or Basis determine what caused the problem, a detailed report is now provided within a TEO alert. TEO automates the incident isolation and highlights the problem in real time for issues involving SAP, Network, OS, or the database. This permits proactive resolution of the problem, as compared to waiting for an end user phone call. TEO can also resolve the problem without human intervention. Automating Troubleshooting steps saves hours of manual work and operational expense.

EMC Replica tion Manager

EMC Replication Manager is a GUI/script-based client and server software that facilitates the operations of EMC arrays and EMC replication technologies. Replication Manager also manages and supports heterogeneous environments from operating system to database level. For example, this can also be done using the Vblock platforms which are based on VNX unified storage (Vblock series 300, models HX, GX, FX, EX). Other databases could be used, such as a SQL Server database. This solution is validated with Oracle database on a Linux platform and some restrictions may apply for other platforms with Tidal on Vblock platforms.

Replication Manager key benefits:

Automates the creation, management, and use of EMC replicas

Auto-discovers the environment

Has intelligence to orchestrate replicas with deep application awareness

Is easy to use with point-and-click controls, wizards, and user access

Supports VMware ESX Server Windows and Linux guest operating system environments and Virtual Machine File System (VMFS) containing virtual machines, and:

- Minimizes backup windows

- Minimizes/eliminates impact on the production system

- Enables application development and testing

- Enables fast restore

- Enables application restart and business resumption

EMC Unified Infras truc ture Manager and the Orches tra tor Component of Cis co In te lligent Automation for Cloud

UIM is a resource manager focused on Vblock hardware, specifically Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS) and EMC storage. Cisco IA-C helps SAP customers reduce operational costs by provisioning and consuming UIM resource pools for SAP landscapes.

While the Orchestrator component of Cisco IA-C can often talk directly to an end device, such as a router or hypervisor host, Cisco IA-C deliberately places a dependency on element and domain managers. These domain-expert products handle resource and API abstraction, scale and availability, versioning and compatibility, and many other optimizations. They also make it much faster to create, modify, and orchestrate high-level services based on the lower-level capabilities of the infrastructure and applications.

UIM provides this domain management for Vblock hardware. Cisco IA-C can take advantage of UIM's pool and resource management capabilities for compute and storage provisioning and resource management, while providing the rest of the provisioning services beyond Vblock hardware. For example, IA-C will provide the coordination of Vblock platform provisioning with configuration of Nexus switches and other networking elements; across the Vblock platform coordination; provisioning of OSS/BSS tools, billing systems, and metering systems; ITIL-grade incident and change management and approvals; and, interaction with the end-customer. Cisco IA-C will benefit immediately from the pre-provisioned pools and resource grades manually created in UIM, and in the future will take advantage of improvements in the UIM API to do on-the-fly creation of UIM pools for tasks like adding capacity or new classes of service.

Des ign and Configura tion

The design and configuration section presents the elements and steps for an IT organization to create a SAP system replication duplicate, cloned environment to test proposed production environment changes before implementing those changes in their actual production environment.

RM is used to provide an array-based replication of SAP systems and backup of an Oracle database, pairing source volumes to target volumes, and storage and file system layouts into a target system. TEO and RM are integrated in the design to speed up replication and automate and simplify SAP system management and operation.

Included are the following subsections:

Storage: Vblock platforms provide the storage for the validation

Disk/Filesystems Layout: layouts are described for both the source system and the target system

Replication Design and Configuration: the tasks carried out with RM

Integration of TEO and RM:

- Describes the configuration details preparation for the test environment on Vblock platforms

- Describes each process in the set of integration processes

Storage

Storage design on the Vblock 700 MX is provided by the Symmetrix VMAX series storage array architecture featuring the scalable Virtual Matrix interconnect design. The Virtual Matrix is redundant and dual active, and supports all Global Memory references, messaging, and management operations including internal discovery and initialization, path management, load balancing, failover, and fault isolation within the array. The Symmetrix VMAX array contains from one to eight VMAX Engines. Each VMAX Engine contains two integrated directors. Each director has two connections to the VMAX Matrix Interface Board Enclosure (MIBE) via the System Interface Board (SIB) ports. Since every director has two separate physical paths to every other director via the Virtual Matrix, this is a highly available interconnect with no single point of failure.

This design eliminates the need for separate interconnects for data, control, messaging, environmental, and system test. A single highly available interconnect suffices for all communications between the directors, which reduces complexity.

The Symmetrix VMAX design is based on an individual Symmetrix VMAX engine with redundant CPU, memory, and connectivity on two directors for fault tolerance. Symmetrix VMAX engines connect to and scale-out linearly through the Virtual Matrix Architecture, which allows resources to be shared within and across VMAX Engines.

Target System

The solution uses EMC Replication Manager to replicate the volumes to facilitate the SAP system copy. In Figure 4, the replication volumes that will be used by RM are highlighted in yellow. The replication volumes must be on the physical RDM and must be visible on the target Virtual Machine.

Figure 4. Replication volumes

Replica tion Des ign and Configura tion

In the solution, the following tasks are completed with EMC RM:

Array-based replication

Oracle database backup

Replicate volumes/Storage Pool

Change a System ID (SID)

Array-based replication

With RM, EMC’s replication technologies can be selected depending on storage type and customers’ requirements, and offer seamless operation. In this solution, the Timefinder/Clone with Consistent Split method is used.

Figure 5. Array-based replication

Oracle Database Backup

Note: SAP’s BR backup method is implemented within the product.

There are three methods to back up an Oracle database with EMC RM:

1. Online without hotbackup mode

2. Online using hotbackup mode

3. Offline backup

In this solution, Online backup with hot backup Mode is selected. This implies that redo logs will be replicated to the target host. For details, refer to the “Storage” section in this document.

Figure 6. Backup method selected for Oracle database

For details on the three backup methods, use the link provided in the References section of this paper to the EMC Replication Manager 5.4.0 Product Guide, pg. 356.

Replicate volumes/Storage Pool

Replicating volumes used by EMC RM need to be on physical RDM and must be identical in size to the source volumes.

Source volumes and replication volumes need to have a one-to-one pairing relationship. Creating a Storage Pool can help facilitate pairing the replication volumes, which is recommended so that RM automatically selects the suitable volumes from the pool at the time of replication. When the replica is deleted, the volumes are also released and available for use.

Change a System ID

The source system and target system each have a different SID. RM will handle changing the SID for the database and mount path, and then will start the Oracle database on the target host. See figure 7.

Figure 7. Replication Manager changes the SID and starts the Oracle database on the target host

In tegra tion of TEO and RM

To integrate TEO and RM, first the configuration preparation steps are performed and then a set of pre-configured template-based process flows are followed in a particular order to complete the integration.

This section presents the integration of Tidal TEO and RM. It contains the configuration details for the test environment on Vblock platforms, in this order:

1. Preparations

2. Integration of Tidal TEO and RM

1. Preparations

General system copy

SAP and Oracle binaries are pre-installed on the target host for this environment

It is recommended to use the identical GID/UID for each user

Tidal TEO

All SAP systems need to import SAP ABAP transports that are provided by Cisco/Tidal representatives. For this solution, SAP transports for SAP System Copy are installed.

Along with SAP ABAP transports, Automation Packs for SAP are required to deploy for this solution

For further details, use the link in the References section of this paper to access the Cisco manual

Tidal Enterprise Orchestrator - System Copy for SAP Systems Process Automation Guide.

Figure 8. SAP ABAP Transports and Automation Packs for SAP

EMC Replication Manager

Having the identical GID/UID for each user between source and target hosts is recommended

Oracle Init file on target host is renamed

RM scripts are prepared

Create an Oracle user for RM to use for security purposes

For further details, use the link in the References section of this paper to the EMC Replication Manager manuals.

2. Integration of Tidal TEO and EMC RM

Tidal TEO automation is a collection of processes, and within the process are one-to-many processes that are preconfigured as templates. This solution leverages the template of SAP pre- and post-activities that run SAP transactions and takes advantage of EMC technologies for Database copy steps as Tidal processes, which orchestrate the entire flow of SAP system refresh. The flow diagrams appear on the following pages of this section.

Figure 9. With Tidal TEO, database copy steps are Tidal processes in RM

Automate SAP System Refresh

See figures 10, 11, 12, and 13.

The main purpose of the following process workflows is to automate SAP system refresh.

The workflows present three main actions: Run SAP pre-activities, SAP System Refresh with RM, and Run SAP post-activities. Between the main actions are some administration tasks.

1. Run SAP pre-activities

a. Present approval request before proceeding to the actual system refresh:

• If approved, move on to the next process and proceed with the system refresh

• If not approved, process terminates at this point.

2. SAP system refresh with RM

a. Start SAP system on target host

b. Request to apply license on target system. If one does not apply the user license to the target system, then the user cannot use their own logon with its access role-based permissions, and could use only SAP’s standard userid, such as SAP* and DDIC. This could limit the user’s ability to perform work.

• If license applied, move on to the next process to proceed the SAP post-activities

• If license not applied, terminate the process at this point.

3. Run SAP post-activities

Tidal configuration to call RM

Replication Manager steps are implemented as a process within TEO. Within a process, an activity to execute the Linux ssh script is specified. Figure 11 shows that the Replication Manager CLI script, to execute the RM job, is configured at the property of the activity.

SAP Preparation Activities and Follow-up Activities

Preparation Activities

Prior to executing the actual SAP system refresh, the SAP source system and target system are checked to determine whether they are ready.

Follow-up Activities

After the completion of SAP system refresh, the Basis administrator needs to run some SAP transactions to adjust the environment. Tidal automation for SAP provides a template, with a variety of SAP transactions, which is easy to modify depending on customers’ requirements. The following figure shows this solution uses some transactions that are pre-configured within TEO as follow-up activities on the target system. See figure 13.

Valida tion

In troduc tion

The validation is performed to verify that virtualizing environments on Vblock platforms, and utilizing RM with integrated TEO, provide an effective means to automate SAP system refresh and improve SAP systems management, service and operation. In the validation procedures, workflows are produced on the target systems to prove that the SAP system refresh automation exists on the target system after replication.

Tes t Objectives
