VCAL Achievement Award winners shine

The 2013 VCAL Achievement Awards celebrated the outstanding achievements of 37 students, five teachers and seven partner organisations.

The Hon Martin Dixon, MP, Minister for Education, who presented many of the awards, reflected on the high quality of the award winners: ‘The award winners represent VCAL excellence across the whole of Victoria. Their exceptional achievements are an inspiration to us all.’

‘This year’s winners were involved in a wide variety of projects. These initiatives ranged from organising a pop-up Spirit of Christmas Gift Shop to provide presents to members of the community, to writing biographies to capture the military service of RAEME members,’ Minister Dixon said.

The award winners have shown great enthusiasm, commitment and diligence and have set a great example for others.

The awards also recognised the exceptional efforts of committed teachers and community partners who have played significant roles with the students and their VCAL studies. Their contributions are many. Some examples include a partnership project led by teacher Nicole Scott from Alkira Secondary College. This involved the development of an integrated program in which students wrote biographies on the military service of members of the Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (RAEME) Association.

Another successful partnership project involved VCAL students working with staff at the Museum of Australian Democracy at Eureka. Working in this cutting-edge facility provided opportunities for these students to explore what it means to be an effective, engaged Australian and how to create a more inclusive and connected society in a digital era.

The 2013 Chair’s Award was presented to two recipients, Jenny Wilson, from the Catholic Education Office Melbourne, and Gayle Anderson, from Footscray City College, for their contribution to the promotion and development of the VCAL in their community.

The VCAA congratulates all 2013 VCAL Achievement Award winners. For the full list of winners, visit the VCAL Achievement Awards webpage.

VCE LEADERSHIP

AWARDS

VCE Leadership Awards 2014

The VCAA is proud to announce this month’s winner of the VCE Leadership Awards, Sam Hasell from Braemar College, Woodend. Sam has demonstrated an engagement with, and commitment to, his local community, and outstanding leadership

skills.

Sam Hasell − Braemar College, WoodendSam Hasell, poet and youth ambassador, believes that poetry ‘bridges the gaps between us’ by helping people to share their stories and ideas. He has worked hard to improve the lives of young people by creating outlets for them to express themselves through poetry. He has also proven his dedication to improving

the mental health and wellbeing of young people through his participation in local council programs.

Sam’s extraordinary talents as a performance poet were on display at the Sydney Opera House in 2013, where he performed as part of the Unleashed Festival, a two-day youth event celebrating youth-led social change.

Sam first took an interest in performance poetry after seeing older students participate in competitions. In 2013, Sam co-founded Pipe Up Poetry, a Macedon Ranges poetry slam that encourages young poets from around the state to perform their work in public. Sam recently secured a $1000 grant for Pipe Up Poetry from Samsung and the Foundation for Young Australians through the Propeller Project, which celebrates social change projects of young people across Australia.

Sam also founded Youngblood Poets, an online forum for young people to talk about and share poetry. Sam describes the forum as a space where teenagers can ‘turn to poetry as a way to respond to the pressures and stresses of their lives’. He is proud to have created a space where young people feel safe enough to share their personal writing.

Anthony Young, English teacher at Braemar College, describes Sam as being generous with his time, encouraging those younger than him to find their creative voice, and guiding

them ‘in pursuing the same success he has enjoyed’. In 2013, Sam coached his school’s poetry team to victory in the OutLoud Teen Slam Poetry Competition. In 2014 he mentored Bendigo Senior Secondary College students in their study of poetry. Anthony says that Sam found his passion in life at a young age, and now inspires other young people to follow in his footsteps.

Anthony says that Sam has also played an integral role in inspiring educators to reinstate poetry units within their curriculum, by performing and sharing his experiences at state and national teacher conferences.

Sam’s commitment to young people extends beyond the world of poetry. Sam was appointed Youth Ambassador by the Macedon Ranges Shire Council, and was one of the first members of the council’s Life4Life Crew, a mental-health promotion initiative. This program seeks to address stigma, and increase awareness of mental health issues among young people in the Macedon Ranges. Annie Rowland, Youth Development Officer at Macedon Ranges Shire Council, describes Sam as an advocate for young people and youth issues.

Sam was part of a team that sought to improve the lives of young people in the Macedon Ranges by rejuvenating a local skate park as a safe, fun place to gather. This campaign, part of the Foundation for Young Australians – Change It Up! pilot, saw the team win a grant of $1000 to make repairs to the skate park, and run projects to tackle negative stereotypes of young people in the community.

Annie says that Sam ‘consistently seeks out and creates his own leadership opportunities’, and describes him as a charismatic, open-minded, motivated, kind human being. These are the attributes that make Sam a remarkable VCE leader. Through his poetry and youth activism, Sam has brought young people together, and inspired change in his community and beyond.

The VCE Leadership Awards recognise the efforts of VCE students in promoting leadership and participation in their school and local community. VCE Leaders are students who demonstrate initiative, inspire others, work well in a team and are committed to making a difference. They take an interest in activities such as the arts, sport, debating and public speaking; they may campaign for social justice and environmental protection and/or raise funds for worthy causes. Finalists receive subscriptions to the Herald Sun, and computer prizes from Lenovo Australia. Students in government, Catholic and independent schools may apply for the award in 2014 by using the application form on the VCAA website.

PLAIN ENGLISH

SPEAKING AWARD

2014 Plain English Speaking Award

Outstanding speeches were given at the Plain English Speaking Award (PESA) semifinals held on 25 and 26 June. The public-speaking competition gives young people from government, Catholic and independent schools the opportunity to

express themselves on topics for which they have a passion. A range of topics, such as fashionable cynicism, sexism and gender equality, asylum seekers and freedom of speech, were covered in the six-minute prepared speeches. The 24 semifinalists were also asked to give a three-minute impromptu speech on a set topic, which included ‘The only way is up’, ‘It’s crunch time’, ‘Let’s get real’ and ‘The show must go on’, over the four semifinal sessions.

Kate Garrow from St Leonard’s College, Laura McArthur from Methodist Ladies’ College, Fergus McLaren from Ballarat Clarendon College, Sean Hollis from St Bede’s College, Emma Wiggins from Toorak College and James Macaronas from St Kevin’s College will all compete in the State Final.

PESA is open to students aged 15 to 18 years, and provides an excellent opportunity for students to build self-confidence and extend their skills in oral communication, speech writing and research. The competition is sponsored by the Australia-Britain Society.

Schools are invited to attend the State Final on Friday 25 July, and teachers are encouraged to bring their students. Entry is free, and Parliament station is the closest public transport to the venue.
