The development and expansion of cellular networks in the last few decades hastransformed the face of industry and commerce. It allows IoT and M2M Networksto transmit real time data on field conditions. This is very beneficial, yet it also addsanother layer of technical difficulty into the installation process. From energy distri-bution to ATMs to vending machines, IoT and M2M networks provide extensivedata to central information systems. However, when the communication system integrating all these moving parts fails, the repercussions can have a costly impacton business.

Over the past few years, the term M2M (Machine to Machine) has slightly mutatedinto the broader term, IoT (Internet of Things). While this change is more of a mar-keting shift than a technological one, it speaks to the vast audience targeted. M2Mnetworks have been around for nearly a decade and will continue to grow in everyindustry they target by the millions. IoT is positioned to address both industrial andconsumer products and needs in the billions. But in the end, M2M and IoT are both

defined by the wireless cellular networkbackbones supporting them. The sameholds true for the wireless testing toolsthat installers and technicians employ.

the field does not support the required signal strength and quality for reliableconnectivity. Even technology created within the last few years can be irrelevant oroutdated. Ownership and functionality of cellular towers, system upgrades or newradio signal interference can cause “state of the art” equipment to fail or performsporadically.

If you are installing a M2M or IoT cellular modem connection in a smart grid application you would not likely glance at a mobile phone for the desired carrierand say: “I have 4 bars here, that should be good enough.”

When making a critical determination you need to make a scientific measurementwith a test instrument. No two cell phones will give you the same “signalstrength” let alone four! Even with a good negotiated plan, it adds up month after month.

The first step in any successful cellular modem installation is verifying that themodem has a good connection back to the carrier network. Two important factors are: good signal strength and good signal quality, which make the modem deployment more reliable.

Select a good quality Cellular Modem

You can pay anywhere from $10 to$80 for a cellular modem, but youget what you pay for. There are manylow cost knock offs appearing in themarket but often they have majordrawbacks aside from their attractive price. Often the low costmodules have not been tested towithstand the extreme tempera-tures, vibration and shock that areoften associated with the environ-ment where M2M and IoT modemsare used whether it be up on a telephone pole or out inthe desert sun monitoring a remote oil rig. When you areintegrating a M2M or IoT cellular modem you want towork with a company that has a solid support team inplace that can assist along the way.

I have personally worked with Telit, Gemalto, and SierraWireless. They provide excellent cellular modems thatwithstand the rigors that come along with challenging in-stalls. They also provide excellent technical support. Theadage “you get what you pay for” is true.

If all the stages of the data collection system are set up properly, the informa-tion is sent wirelessly to a cellular network, transmitted through the Internetand to a server in your monitoring station or headquarters. And all is well.But we’re talking about real life here.

Think about an iPhone signal breaking up and how a conversation gets miscommunicated. Now, think about 3,000 ATM machines “talking” to the“terminal.” That’s a challenge. The difficulty is to place these modems wherethey have the best signal coverage and strength so your stream of informa-tion from these data collectors is not lost. Add to this the challenge thatoften the ATM may have to be placed in a spot that is not ‘prime real estate’let alone in line-of-site to the closest cell tower. Often the ATM is placed in a2’ x 2’ corner down the hall where there is an empty space.

2Finding the best signal strength -When the list has filled the screen, you canpress the “list Icon” to order theRSRP signals from strongest toweakest. The carrier with thehigher negative RSRP numberhas the best signal strength (-65 is strongerthan -85). It’s that easy! (The Squid-PRO 3Gshows the lowest RSSI).

antenna Placement -To find best antenna placement, simply un-screw the omnidirectional antenna includedwith your Squid. Next, take your permanentsite install antenna and screw that directlyinto your Squid unit. Both the RSRP (4G) andRSSI (3G) screens display signal strength aslarge digits with a moving horizontal bar. Asyou move the site antenna around, the signalstrength (large font) will change accordingly toindicate the best placement. This should be

easily viewable even if you are farfrom the actual display. also note

the “peak hold” indicator. It’s a smallblack square at theend of the signal bar

showing the strongest signalrecorded since scanning began. Besure your hands are off the an-tenna while measuring signalstrength or you can get a falsereading.

Why is RSRP better than RSSI? It’s technical. What is RSRP? It is an LTE (4G) specific metric that averagesthe RF power in all of the reference signals in the passband.RSRP is the average power of resource elements that carrycell specific Reference Signals (RS) over the entire band-width, (i.e. RSRP is only measured in the symbols carryingRS. A resource element is one OFDM subcarrier for the duration of one OFDM symbol.

What about RSSI? This is an valid metric but more fittinglyused to display signal strength for 3G technologies (GSM,CDMA1X. etc.) and it integrates all of the RF power within the channelpassband. In other words, for LTE, RSSI measurement bandwidth is ALLactive subcarriers, measured in all symbols. By definition, RSSI includespower of all interference and thermal noise.

3. Why do The Installers specify the Squid?No more “you guys screwed up”
