WelcomeBooks published by the Vitra Design Museum are highly sought after by architecture and design enthusiasts alike. Hardly any other museum in the German-speaking area has succeeded in building up such an impressive publishing programme, which is distributed internationally. As one of the world’s leading design museums, we attach great importance to the aes-thetic and design quality of every one of our publications. We offer high-quality equipment and work with outstanding graphic designers and illustrators, such as Double Standards, Greige, Brighten the Corners and Maira Kalman. What is more, we do not compromise on content: our titles not only include a large number of standard works and monographs, but also offer surprising and fresh insights into important designers and design issues that appeal to a wide audience. We are proud to present to you our latest titles:»The Bauhaus #itsalldesign« dares to take a fresh look at the understanding of Bauhaus design. The catalogue shows that design at the Bauhaus encompassed much more than the modern design cliché of a cool and industrial aesthetic. At the same time, it compares Bauhaus designs with current developments and trends in design and thereby shows how relevant many of the issues discussed at the Bauhaus remain today. This spring, we are also excited to present to you the first comprehensive publication on one of the most important modern textile artists, collectors and interior designers of the twentieth century, namely Alexander Girard. The lavishly illustrated catalogue, containing essays by various experts, draws from his private estate at the Vitra Design Museum, which is being subjected to scholarly documentation for the first time. With Girard, we discover one of the outstanding figures of twentieth century design. A real feast of colour and brimming with life, this book will enthral you! Finally, we are exploring new paths with a small but fine little book entitled »The Lucky, Plucky Chairs«. This will be the first children’s book ever to be published by the publishers of the Vitra Design Museum. This story is written by the author and passionate chair collector Rolf Fehlbaum, who makes the furniture dance for you!

We hope you enjoy our new publishing programme!

The Bauhaus was one of the 20th century’s most influential cultural movements, yet at the same time it is regarded as the epitome of the Modernist design cliché: geometric, industrial, minimalistic. The publication »The Bauhaus #itsalldesign« disproves this cliché and takes a new, up-to-date look at the design of the Bauhaus. The book offers the very first comprehensive overview of the extended concept of design which was initiated at the Bauhaus showing the great interest of Bauhaus designers in social interconnections, experiments and processes. Alongside rare exhibits from design, architecture, art, film, and photography, the book documents the development processes as well as the socio-political concepts behind the Bauhaus. To underline their relevance for today’s creative practise, these ideas are contrasted to current themes in design such as the digital revolution, and the works of numerous present-day artists and designers. Among others, Olaf Nicolai, Adrian Sauer, Wilfried Kühn and Joseph Grima created artistic works on the topic especially for the exhibition and the publication. The lavishly illustrated publication features essays by renowned authors, a glossary of key terms related to all aspects of the Bauhaus, as well as a detailed catalogue section.

Making AfricaA Continent of Contemporary Design

»Making Africa« takes a fresh look at African design. For the first time, we have a book that focuses on creative accomplishments on the continent, without being obsessed with the usual tropes of recycling, humanitarian design or traditional crafts. Instead, »Making Africa« shows a new generation of designers who use their work as a tool for economic, political and social change and therefore also to create a new future for the continent. Their creative output defies all definitions of genres – crossing over classical fields such as furniture design, product design and typography to encompass digital media, art, photography, architecture and film. A large section of the catalogue is dedicated to documenting work by over 120 protagonists of Africa’s new creative epoch – including Cyrus Kabiru, Cheick Diallo, Mário Macilau, Francis Kéré, David Adjaye, Kunlé Adeyemi, Bodys Isek Kingelez, Robin Rhode, Alaforu Sikoki, Selly Raby Kan and many more. The his-torical and theoretical background is explored in essays and discussions with Ok-wui Enwezor, Koyo Kouoh, Edgar Pieterse and Amelie Klein, among others. These are complemented by statements from around 70 other experts from Africa, who met at interviews and think tanks in cities such as Cape Town, Johannesburg, La-gos, Dakar, Nairobi and Cairo. This is a book about the future of Africa and about a new, more open way of understanding design – which means it is also a book about what design can achieve in the 21st century.

Alexander Girard

Alexander Girard (1907–1993) was one of the most important modern textile artists and interior designers of the twentieth century. He worked closely with such de-signers as Charles Eames and George Nelson and combined Pop Art and Folk Art influences to create a colourfully opulent aesthetic language, whose impact con-tinues to be felt today. The richly illustrated catalogue draws on the vast holdings in Alexander Girard’s private estate, which were exhaustively investigated for the first time at the Vitra Design Museum. The book presents the entire oeuvre of the multitalented Italian-American designer in all its facets while offering the first scholarly critical examination of his work. Seven essays address Girard’s textile creations and graphic design for the furniture manufacturer Herman Miller, impor-tant interior design projects such as the Irwin Miller House in Columbus, Indiana (1953) and the restaurant La Fonda del Sol in New York (1960), his activities as a pioneering exhibition organizer and curator, his roots in Italy and his passion for folk art, which resulted in a collection of more than 100,000 objects and served as one of the most important sources of inspiration for his own work. In addition to extensive portfolios with never-before-shown archive materials, the publication also provides the first comprehensive biography and a complete list of works.

Vitra Campus Architektur Design industrie

Since the 1980s, the Vitra company has erected buildings in collaboration with some of the leading architects of the present day, including Zaha Hadid, Frank Gehry, Tadao Ando, SANAA, Álvaro Siza, Nicholas Grimshaw and Herzog & de Meuron. This has resulted in a unique architectural ensemble, about which the architectural critic Philip Johnson wrote: »Since the Weissenhofsiedlung in Stuttgart in 1927, there has not been a gathering in a single place of a group of buildings designed by the most distinguished architects in the Western world.« The Vitra Campus currently attracts over 330,000 annual visitors. While the VitraHaus by Herzog & de Meuron provides the opportunity to experience furniture classics and new products from the Vitra Home Collection, the renowned Vitra Design Museum by Frank Gehry presents alternating exhibitions, which are accompanied by numerous events and workshops. Further attractions on the Vitra Campus include a museum shop, a café and guided architectural tours of the buildings on the Campus. With roughly 200 illustrations, »The Vitra Campus« offers an overview of Vitra architecture, its daily use, the development of the Campus and biogra-phies of the architects. It is ideally suited as a souvenir, as preparation for a visit, as a Campus guide or simply as interesting reading on some of the most signifi-cant architects and buildings of our time.

Alvar Aalto Second Nature

The richly illustrated book is the first in many years to offer a comprehensive and current overview of Aalto’s œuvre as an architect, designer and urban planner. Ten authors, such as the renowned architectural historians Eeva-Liisa Pelkonen and Akos Moravanszky and MoMA curator Pedro Gadanho, address central aspects in Aalto’s work. Particular attention is directed to Aalto’s dialogue with important artists of his day, including László Moholy -Nagy, Jean Arp, Alexander Calder and Fernand Léger, as well as his interest in film, cinema and photography whose influences on his work are examined here for the first time. The catalogue section presents numerous never-before-seen original drawings and architectural models from the archive of the Alvar Aalto Foundation. The new contemporary perspective on Alvar Aalto is complemented with photographs by Armin Linke who documented a number of Aalto’s buildings anew especially for this publication.

Artificial light has revolutionized our environment like almost no other medium. Today, we are experiencing a profound change in the world of artificial light, with as yet unforeseeable consequences for people’s lives. »Lightopia« presents icons and examples of lighting design, setting them in a broader cultural and historical context. The publication comprises three separate books in a slipcase. In volume 1, renowned authors take a close look at the cultural history of light in a number of essays dealing with topics as diverse as the scenographic significance of light or its psychological aspects. Volume 2 presents a selection of the 100 most important luminaires from the collection of the Vitra Design Museum – dating from 1900 to today – and includes texts on the development of lighting design. In volume 3, interviews with well-known lighting designers and artists explore how new illumination technologies revolutionize the creative use of light today. With its three volumes, »Lightopia« constitutes a unique compendium of lighting design. It is opulently illustrated and encompasses an exceptional spectrum of examples from design, art and architecture; with works by Olafur Eliasson, Gino Sarfatti, Ingo Maurer, mischer’traxler, Carlos Cruz-Diez, Wilhelm Wagenfeld, Richard Sapper, Achille Castiglioni, Ulrike Brandi, Pieke Bergmans and many others.

Louis Kahn The Power of Architecture

The American architect Louis Kahn (1901 – 1974) is regarded as one of the great master builders of the twentieth century. With complex spatial compositions, an elemental formal vocabulary and a choreographic mastery of light, Kahn created buildings of archaic beauty. As the first comprehensive publication on this architect in 20 years, the book »Louis Kahn – The Power of Architecture« presents all of his important projects. It includes essays by prominent Kahn experts and an expan-sive illustrated biography with many new facts and insights about Kahn’s life and work. In a number of interviews, leading architects such as Frank Gehry, Renzo Piano, Peter Zumthor and Sou Fujimoto underline Kahn’s significance in today’s architectural discourse. An extensive catalogue of works features original drawings and architectural models from the Kahn archive. The compendium is further augmented by a portfolio of Kahn’s travel drawings as well as photographs by Thomas Florschuetz, which offer completely new views of the Salk Institute and the Indian Institute of Management.

George NelsonArchitekt, Autor, Designer, Lehrer

George Nelson, who earned an architectural degree from Yale, was not only a leading designer and notable architect, but also a prominent author, editor, lecturer, exhibition designer and a passionate photographer. As Design Director at the Herman Miller Furniture Company, Nelson played a key role in developing the products and public image of the firm over a period of more than two decades – a pioneering achievement in the field of corporate design. Many modern furniture classics and exemplary interior designs emerged from this collaboration. Nelson also contributed important ideas to the topic of domestic living with new concepts for home building and interior furnishing. His innovative ideas about the work environment played an equally significant role in the development of the modern office landscape. In addition to these achievements, Nelson was recognized throughout his life as a discriminating editor and brilliant author, publishing a dozen books and more than 100 articles and essays on design topics. The book accompanies the first comprehensive retrospective of George Nelson’s work. With eight essays by German and American design historians, the publication deals with all of the areas in Nelson’s oeuvre, many of which are presented here for the first time. The book also includes an illustrated list of works. The majority of illustrations, previously unpublished, come from the Nelson Estate in the Vitra Design Museum Archive.
