2 ICELAND REVIEW

Since 1986, the annual vestnorden travel Mart (vntM) has been the main platform for promoting the unique west nor-dic region—Iceland, Greenland and the Faroe Islands—as

a tourist destination. this year the annual trade show will take place in nuuk, Greenland, September 21-22, next year in Reykja-vík, Iceland, and in 2015 in tórshavn, the Faroe Islands. At vntM, the three west nordic neighbors offer a glimpse of their worlds of untamed nature and colorful cultures, so close, yet so different.

In Kalaallit nunaat, better known as Greenland, you find the oldest rock on the planet, while in next-door Iceland, you find the youngest. And the Faroe Islands are like small sparkling green diamonds in the middle of the north Atlantic ocean. the Faroes have the most beautiful light on the planet, in fact.

the size of Greenland is immense, comparable to all of west-ern europe. Its harsh beauty is truly unique and the seasons are

as extreme as they get. the local population, the Inuit, are true survivors, a beautiful and strong people.

while Greenland is the world’s largest island, the Faroe Islands archipelago is among the world’s smallest and Iceland is some-where in between. with its active volcanoes and countless water-falls breaking new ground, the land is still being shaped.

but it’s not only nature that attracts visitors to these countries. In the capitals, tórshavn, Reykjavík and nuuk, you can get to know the local cultures, not to forget the food traditions. there you can find excellent restaurants serving locally-produced food of the highest quality.

Reserving a table, visiting these islands, is easier than you think. there’s good air connection between the islands and to the big world out there. So it’s about time to take the time to visit another planet, planet vestnorden.

established in 2006, nAtA combines the previous organizations vntb (west nor-dic tourist board), SAMIK (a Greenland/

Iceland tourist cooperation) and FItuR (an Iceland/Faroe Islands cooperation).

“nAtA’s mission is to support cooperation within tourism development in the west nor-dic region, and promote it as a tourist des-tination,” explains director General of the Iceland tourist board Ólöf Ýrr Atladóttir. “we go about this in various ways: by support-ing coordinated marketing projects for the region, helping improve the quality of tour-ism services, building partnerships between the participating countries and promoting knowledge sharing, product development and innovation. Among nAtA’s biggest undertakings each year is hosting vestnorden travel Mart, the largest tourism tradeshow in the region.”

In addition, nAtA offers grants and travel support for projects that express their vision, providing opportunities and grants for col-laborations, joint ventures and cultural ex-changes within the region.

nAtA’s board of directors consists of six members with two representing each coun-try. the chairmanship rotates, with Greenland holding the chairmanship in 2013-2015. Since 2011, its administrative base has been in tór-shavn, the Faroe Islands.

“At nAtA, many projects lie ahead, for ex-ample pertaining to quality issues, the regu-latory framework and environmental issues,” adds Ólöf. “Iceland has the largest tourism industry of the three countries and attracts most visitors, but of course, all three countries can draw strengths from each other and the distinctive nature of the region. despite be-ing quite different from one another, all three countries have so many things to teach each other, and that makes nAtA such an impor-tant platform.”

visit Greenland and Z-Meetings are the main organizers of the 28th vestnorden travel Mart (vntM), held Septem-ber 21-22 in nuuk. Managing director of visit Greenland

Anders Stenbakken, who is also the chairman of the board of the north Atlantic tourism Association (nAtA), responsible for the annual event, highlights the good collaboration between the three west nordic countries—Iceland, Greenland and the Faroe Islands—in promoting tourism in the region.

the main focus of this year’s vntM is visibility, continuity and attracting new buyers. “there was no fixed solution on how to pass on the event from one country to another,” reveals Sten-bakken. vntM is held in Iceland every other year and every four years in Greenland or the Faroes. one of nAtA’s initiatives was to improve the event’s website and make it a permanent source of information. “If the visibility isn’t good enough, how can we expect to attract new buyers?” asks Stenbakken. to that end, organizers have been active in commercializing the event, among

other means by making the product manual more attractive for ad-vertisers. visit Greenland also went on a road-trip of the u.S along with its Icelandic partners, recruiting seven new American compa-nies for vntM 2013. “twenty-seven percent of companies have never been in vestnorden before,” says Stenbakken. A novelty at vntM this year is the pioneering lounge to which companies that are not directly related to tourism have been invited, includ-ing Royal Arctic line, Great Greenland, Royal Greenland, bank of Greenland and tele Greenland.

‘be a pioneer,’ is in fact visit Greenland’s slogan. “the image of Greenland, of a national park with indigenous people, has become too static. A pioneering spirit is what is shared by all who are at-tracted to Greenland,” says Stenbakken of both settlers and visi-tors. “You choose Greenland because you have some of that pio-neering dnA.”

Greenlanders say that “our backyards are like your national parks” and there’s certainly truth to that. In a country the size of western europe, nearly all of it covered by a mas-

sive icecap, with a population so miniscule that it could fit into a football stadium, Greenlanders live along the island’s coast in harmony with the wild and vast nature all around.

being home to approximately 16,500 of Greenland’s 57,000 in-habitants, nuuk is the country’s largest city but one of the world’s smallest capitals by population. established in 1728, nuuk is also the country’s oldest city, serving as its cultural, economic and po-litical center. Meaning ‘headland,’ nuuk is located at the end of the nuup Kangerlua fjord on Greenland’s western coast just below the Arctic circle, basked in the glory of the midnight sun in sum-mer and graced by dazzling northern lights in winter.

brimming with life, visitors to nuuk can enjoy a range of city tours, learning about Greenlandic nature, history, art and culture,

before heading out to the wilderness on longer or shorter hikes, sightseeing by boat or air, whale watching tours and visits to Inuit villages to get to know the local food and lifestyle. vari-ous hunting and fishing trips can also be arranged, and visitors should not fail to witness the calving glacier in the nuuk fjord. For the adrenaline kick of a lifetime, try heliskiing in pristine conditions.

Arctic SpeciAliStS....................................................................................................

Since its establishment in 1960—for more than 50 years—Air Greenland has been the country’s lifeline. only about 57,000 people live in Greenland, the world’s largest island, which is com-parable in size to all of western europe. the small towns scat-tered across the island’s coastline aren’t connected by roads and so the local communities depend on the arrival of the national airline’s helicopters and airplanes. Air Greenland has decades of experience in flying in Arctic conditions. “It can be challenging but we always get people to their destinations,” says director for commercial operations christian Keldsen. “european carriers don’t have the same obligation.” Keldsen states that locals are fond of the company and he himself describes it as a “fun work-place,” because, “we work with everything from a small five-seat helicopter to a large Airbus—no other airline in the world has such a diverse fleet.”

pioneer in SociAl contribution........................................................................................................

Air Greenland takes its social responsibility seriously. In addition to being one of Greenland’s largest employers and an important contributor to the national economy, the airline is involved in social development, sponsoring education for young people and funding cultural activities. those who fly with Air Greenland take part in supporting the airline’s varied cSR (corporate social responsibility) programs.

the beSt of GreenlAndic hoSpitAlity........................................................................................................

while budget airlines are cutting down on services, passengers on Air Greenland can expect luxury treatment. “three-course meals are served on the copenhagen flights and everything is included, something usually only available on long hauls,” says Keldsen.

Air Greenland serves as the only supplier of goods and means of transport to many of the miniscule local communities of the world’s largest island. To visitors, Air Greenland is the gateway to the ultimate Arctic experience.

Seeing the vast inland icecap from the air is sure to leave you awestruck. land on the icecap as part of a helicopter tour, or feel the ice under your feet by joining a half-day excursion.

SAme-dAy connectionS to All mAjor deStinAtionS.......................................................................................................

Air Greenland offers international flights to Greenland from copen-hagen, denmark, year-round, and seasonally from Keflavík, Iceland, and Iqaluit in nunavut, canada. domestically, practically all towns in Greenland are included in the airline’s network. Same-day con-nections are offered from copenhagen to 15 major destinations in Greenland, so if people depart from denmark in the morning, they can be dog-sledding already in the afternoon.

diverSe experienceS – over 2,500 km from north to South.......................................................................................................

Keldsen explains that travelers visit different regions for different purposes and once they’ve been to one part of Greenland, they’re eager to visit another. “nuuk, the capital, is a modern metropolis in the Arctic, where a number of expats live and work. South Green-land is a green region where settlements and towns are close to each other. the region is popular for hiking and whale watching. the climate is slightly warmer than the rest of the country so this is where agriculture is practiced, and it’s also where the vikings who came from Iceland settled, as archaeological remains bear witness to,” he says. “In the north, at disko bay, you get the classic Green-landic experience with dogsleds, icebergs and the uneSco world Heritage Site Icefjord,” he adds of the popular tourist destination

Ilulissat. “In the east you also get the pristine Greenlandic experi-ence with short day trips to the icecap and dog-sledding, while in Sisimiut [in central-western Greenland] you’ll find unique architec-ture in addition to dog-sledding, skidoo tours, hiking and skiing.” this is also where the annual Arctic circle Race, a 160-km (100-mile) extremely tough international cross-country ski race, takes place, usually in March.

GlobAl bookinG SyStem....................................................................................................

with all these attractions waiting to be discovered, booking tick-ets with Air Greenland has become easier than ever with the new Amadeus booking system, available online and at travel agencies, and the interline agreements with Icelandair and SAS. “we’ve entered the 21st century,” laughs Keldsen. Go to greenland.com, the country’s official tourism website, get tempted to visit this unique country and start planning your trip.

greenlanD fiShing anD hunting

In 2012, lax-á opened a camp on the coast of Southwest Green-land, comprising of 12 two-person lodges, a kitchen and a dining room with electricity and running water along with other modern commodities, explains director of Sales Harpa Hlín Þórðardóttir. the camp serves as a base for lax-á’s trips, organized in coopera-tion with the Greenland caribou company which holds the exclu-sive hunting and fishing rights to 500 square km (196 square miles) in the area. the lax-á camp is also the perfect destination for na-ture walks, exploring the wildlife and wilderness.

the adventure begins with a flight from Reykjavík to narsarsuaq, where local guides welcome the visitors, followed by a scenic boat ride to the camp. Harpa describes her first trip to Greenland as her most memorable holiday ever. “Greenland is just an amazing country, so close but also so different from what we’re used to. In my first visit, I experienced a new connection to nature,” she says.

Already in the afternoon of the day she arrived, she went fishing for Arctic char in a lake near the camp. “the Arctic char fishing there is the best in the world. there are just so many of them and of a good size; up to ten pounds or more. the next morning a local Inuit guide took me out shooting and I got a big trophy caribou, only after about 30 minutes of sailing from the camp.” before the day was through, Harpa and her group went sea fishing with an old-fashioned hand-line, catching cod, bullhead and flounder. “At the camp we had a great big barbeque with the catch of the day.” the following days were spent visiting local villages, fishing more char and cod and try-ing out for some Atlantic salmon Harpa and her traveling compan-ions saw jumping in the ocean. “we lost one, but will have to come back for those,” she vows. “Greenland has captured my heart and I cannot wait to go back.” visitors describe the country as the ultimate wildlife experience.

lying off the famous Ring Road that encircles the country, the west-fjords are not as frequented as Iceland’s other regions. However, tour-ists are increasingly coming to realize that a visit to the westfjords—

one of the world’s best-kept secrets, according to TIME magazine—is certainly worth it.

the westfjords have endless options for tours, activities and outdoor recreation, tailored to suit everyone’s preferences. unrivaled hiking trails can be found all over the region, with tours by bus, jeep, sea, Atv and bike also being available. the region has some of the best conditions for sea kayaking in Iceland, where travelers paddle in calm waters while watching seals or even whales at play in breathtaking scenery.

In winter the westfjords transform into a magical kingdom of snow and ice, lit up by the yellowish glow of the Arctic sun for only a few hours a day in high winter. In clear weather millions of twinkling stars and dancing northern lights appear in the black winter sky. A paradise for backcountry skiing, sailing into an abandoned fjord, hiking to a mountain top and skiing in virgin snow all the way down to the shore is an experience like no other.
