IntroductionThis wet armature solenoid operateddirectional control valve is for directingand stopping flow at any point in ahydraulic system. Its primary function isto determine the direction of the fluidflow in a work cylinder or determine thedirection of rotation of a fluid motor.

These valves are designed to meet therequirements of high performance, precision industrial hydraulic systemsoperating at pressures up to 315 bar(4570 psi) and flows to 115 L/min (30 USgpm). They mount on the ISOsize 05 mounting surface.

The performance of the mostconventional solenoid operateddirectional valves is limited by the flowforces acting on the spool in oppositionto the solenoids and return springs.Special attention is given tocompensating for, or minimizing, theseundesirable forces in the design of theseries 5 valve.

Features and BenefitsHigh Performance

High pressure and flow capability withperformance comparable to competitors, due to 315 bar (4570 psi) and 115 L/min(30 USgpm) ratings.

Reliability

A high margin of shifting force isavailable to overcome spool friction dueto dirt and other contaminants. Also, abalance spool with cushioned shiftmeans less wear and long life.

Wet armature solenoids for quieteroperation and long life with nodynamic seal leakage.

Molded coil construction is imperviousto moisture and dirt.

Larger diameter spool combined withconstant area and tangential flowpassages result in low pressure drop.

Stainless steel solenoid pin isprocessed hardened for long life.

Patented detent mechanism forgreater reliability and long life.

Serviceability

Plug-in coils and electrical connectionssimplify maintenance.

Cartridge style manual actuators;easily replaced or exchanged for anSAE plug.

Plug–in solenoid coil for ease ofservicing can be replaced withoutdisturbing the hydraulic system orwiring cavity.

Two solenoid sizes to choose from foroptimum performance and cost selection.

Optional pin-type or top-side plug-inelectrical connectors for easy valvereplacement. Reversible to fit anyinstallation need.

Dual frequency (50/60 Hz) 2-wire coilsfor lower inventory at the OEM (optional).

3

DG4V4-01, 1* DesignOptimum Performance Features

Spool Cushioning Passage -Equalizes hydraulic force on ends ofthe spool and cushions spool shift.

When spool is shifted, the fluiddisplaced from one end of the spool istransferred to the other end throughthis passage which is designed toprovide a cushioning effect andbalance the spool.

Spool Force-Balancing Contour -The hydraulic unbalancing effects offluid momentum between the cylinderand tank ports is minimized.

Flow forces that are developed at theconventional square land orifice (P toB) are partially compensated for by theforce balancing contour on the outerspool lands (A to T).

Spool Land Sequencing - Accuratesequencing of land opening andclosing provides maximum axialstability.

In the example above, it is importantthat the flow path A to T is openedbefore the path P to B to preventpressure intensification which couldupset axial balance and limit valvefunction.

Isolated Solenoid Chambers -Transient pressure peaks in thesolenoid to prevent solenoid tubefailure are minimized.

Typical 2-Land Spool

Pressure surges can occur within thearmature tube of 2-land wet armaturevalves due to cylinder portdecompression. These surges can easilyexceed tube pressure rating and result inpremature tube failure.

4-Land Spool

The armature tube area is isolatedfrom the tank port area by theoutboard lands on the 4-land spool.Tank port pressure surges do notreach the armature tube to causefailure.

Reducedperformance may result when certainspools are used in 3-way circuits.

Fluids & SealsBuna N seals are standard and arecompatible with water-in-oil emulsions, high water base fluids and petroleum oils. For phosphate ester fire resistant fluids,Viton seals must be specified. Sealsfor water glycol have an F6 designation.Maximum operating pressure for highwater base fluids is 1000 psi.

A change to another specific gravity will yield anapproximately proportional change in pressure drop.

The specific gravity of a fluid may be obtained from itsproducer. Fire resistant fluids usually have higher specificgravities than oil.

DrainOn 2-way valves, ‘‘T’’ is the drain andmust be connected to the tank through asurge-free line, so there will be no backpressure at this port.

CAUTIONSurges of oil in acommon line servingthese and other valvescan be of sufficient

magnitude to cause inadvertentshifting of these valves. This isparticularly critical in the no-springdetented type valves. Separate tanklines, or a vented manifold with acontinuous downward path to tankare necessary. Consult your Vickersrepresentative for instructions.

Fluid CleanlinessEssential information on the correctmethods for treating hydraulic fluid isincluded in Vickers publication 561“Vickers Guide to SystemicContamination Control” available fromyour local Vickers distributor or bycontacting Vickers, Incorporated.Recommendations on filtration and theselection of products to control fluidcondition are included in 561.

Recommended cleanliness levels, usingpetroleum oil under common conditions, are based on the highest fluid pressurelevels in the system. Fluids other thanpetroleum, severe service cycles, ortemperature extremes are cause foradjustment of these cleanliness codes.See Vickers publication 561 for exactdetails.
