    INTRODUCTION

The Mumbai City Museum, also known as the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum (Dr. BDL Museum), isin the process of creating a new dynamic identity for itself as a cultural hub in Mumbai. It isone of Indias most outward-looking cultural institutions, with strong links to its sister museum, the V&A in London. The Dr. BDL Museum regularly hosts international events, including theBMW Guggenheim Lab.

Museums in India have traditionally been viewed as graveyards, relics of history that are oflittle cons equence in the daily lives of the people. The Museums Board is determined tochange this perception and ensure that the Museum plays a constructive role:communicating across the generations and society and engaging in long term relationshipswith visitors.

To do this design must offer a meaningful and refreshing discovery of Mumbais history and

culture, as well as interrogate contemporary issues and create a platform for culturaldialogue.

New North Wing project, the subject of this competition, will allow us to unlock the fullpotential of existing collection, historic main building and lovely setting.

    OBJECTIVE

The Museums mission statement explains the organisations purpose:

to serve the community as an institution dedicated to e xcellence in cultural educationthrough exhibitions and different visual and intellectual media

to engage the community, especially children

to promote a greater appreciation of Mumbais artistic, cu ltural and economic history anddevelopment

to promote cross cultural understanding and cultural awareness at all levels

    ABOUT THE PROJECT

The new wing will provide contemporary spaces and facilities to meet the evolving work ofthe Museum-in Mumbai and internationally. This will combine enlarged and improvedconservation, research and documentation accommodation with new galleries a libraryand convention amenities. The new wing will be a destination in its own right, with its ownidentity and operational distinctiveness. It will complement the remarkable heritagearchitecture and detailing of the main building, yet it will say something fresh and relevant tothe 21st century.

The current site benefits from a sense of tranquillity, enriched by the mature landscape. Thisrare attribute will be continued in the development of the new wing. The grounds alsosupport various educational and community activities springing from the Museums objectiveto engage with the cultural life of Mumbai. The enlarged site is expected to continue anddevelop these uses so a masterplan approach to the site and location of new amenities isneeded.

    SITE
