1 Royal College of Music Videographer Further particulars of the post The College The Royal College of Music provides specialised musical education and professional training at the highest international level for about 800 full-time students (undergraduate and postgraduate). Because of its worldwide reputation the College is an international community: about one in four of the students come from outside the UK. Former students of the College hold key roles in music and the arts in all parts of the world - as performers, teachers, composers, conductors and animateurs. Staff The College has over two hundred members of professorial (teaching) staff, the majority of whom are busy professionals, who include teaching among the various musical activities that they regularly undertake. Their work, and the work of the College as a whole, is supported by a team of over one hundred administrative staff. Location The College benefits from its particular location in South Kensington - one of the most attractive and interesting parts of central London. The area is well-served by public transport: South Kensington tube station is within ten minutes walk; several bus routes pass the Royal Albert Hall. Kensington Gardens and the main museums are only a short walk away; Imperial College of Science, Technology & Medicine is next door; the Royal College of Art and the Royal Albert Hall are just across the road. The area, known originally as Albertopolis, emerged as a location for national institutions in the arts and sciences after the Great Exhibition of 1851 largely because of the enthusiasm of Prince Albert. Relationships with neighbouring institutions are friendly and supportive. RCM Studios The original studio at the Royal College of Music was founded by composer Tristram Carey in 1967 and was the first electronic studio at any UK academic institution. It inspired a generation of composers to experiment with electroacoustic music, a theme that continues at the RCM to this day. Today the studios provide a wide range of commercial-quality services and facilities to the College’s community, including state of the art classical recording, video production, live web streaming, audio-visual research and development, live sound and projection for major concerts and events, and provision of specialist facilities for screen composers. The studio complex is located directly under the RCM Concert Hall and consists of a medium sized live room (the Belle Shenkman Studio) with its own Steinway Model D grand piano, two control rooms linked to performance spaces around the campus, and three rooms for composition, production and editing. The studio team consists of the Head of Studios,

The College

The Royal College of Music provides specialised musical education and professional training at the highest international level for about 800 full-time students (undergraduate and postgraduate).

Today the studios provide a wide range of commercial-quality services and facilities to the College’s community, including state of the art classical recording, video production, live web streaming, audio-visual research and development, live sound and projection for major concerts and events, and provision of specialist facilities for screen composers. recording engineer, videographer, trainee recording engineer (who all work flexibly across a wide range of technical disciplines) and administrator. The staff team is supported by a number of freelance engineers and specialists as required. RCM Studios is always in high demand from commercial clients and our staff producers and engineers work across the UK on a range of commercial projects each year. The resulting income is re-invested to help maintain and develop the studio facilities for the benefit of our students. Follow the RCM Studios on Twitter @rcmstudios Video Facilities The studios’ current video facilities include Panasonic HD remote camera rigs in the College’s two largest performance spaces, broadcast quality remote-controlled SD cameras in the studio, two Canon XF205 professional HD camcorders, FCP 7 and Adobe Master Collection (CS6) post production software, Blackmagic and Panasonic switchers and a range of professional lighting equipment. The post holder will be involved in future upgrade and development plans. The Post The Videographer is a senior member of the RCM Studios team and is the College’s expert on video production and technology. The role mirrors that of the Recording Engineer, who takes a lead on audio production and technology. Due to the size and flexible nature of the team, the two post holders will work closely together with a broad overlap. It is therefore expected that the Videographer will be comfortable working with audio and taking on a range of audio/music based tasks (for which training and support will be provided) and that the Recording Engineer will continue to be closely involved in video projects. Together, the Recording Engineer and Videographer will assist in training and supervising the Trainee Recording Engineer (placement student). The College’s use of digital video has increased and developed considerably in recent years, a trend which we expect to continue, especially in relation to digital teaching and learning. There will be exciting opportunities for the post holder to contribute to strategic and creative development in the College’s use of video, so a demonstrable passion for the use of video in learning, and in classical music performance, will be advantageous. More Music The College has recently embarked on its most ambitious construction and redevelopment phase in its history. The College’s halls of residence on Goldhawk Road are being rebuilt; and building work to transform the College’s east courtyard is due to commence in summer 2016. The latter project will give new foyer space, better access and circulation throughout the building, two new high specification performance/recording spaces, a new Museum of Music and a new dedicated studio complex. More details are available at www.rcm.ac.uk/moremusic. The studio team will be involved in supporting and contributing to plans for the new studios and performance spaces over the next two years.
