WORLD SCIENCE DAY FOR PEACE AND DEVELOPMENT VidyaVikas Academy celebrated the World Science Day for Peace and Development on 10th November. It highlights the important role of science in society and the need to engage the wider public in debates on emerging scientific issues. It also underlines the importance and relevance of science in our daily lives.

By linking science more closely with society, World Science Day for Peace and Development aims to ensure that citizens are kept informed of developments in science. It also underscores the role scientists play in broadening our understanding of the remarkable, fragile planet we call home and in making our societies more sustainable.

The Day offers the opportunity to mobilize all actors around the topic of science for peace and development – from government officials to the media to school pupils. UNESCO strongly encourages all to join in celebrating World Science Day for Peace and Development by organising different activities for children on this day.

Class 9C started the programme with a prayer service, followed by two speeches by Sriya Rallabandi and Pratyusha Venigalla. Some of the students then quoted a few famous words from eminent scientists. The programme was compered by Miss Nicole Lourenco.It concluded with the National Anthem. CHILDREN’S DAY “Every child is a different kind of flower and all together, make this world a beautiful garden.”

Children’s’ Day was celebrated on the lawns of the School Campus of Vidya Vikas Academy, for the students of Pre-Primary to Class 12.

On 14th November, 2016,the students of the Pre-Primary and Classes 1 to 5 had their celebrations. And on 15th November, 2016, students of Classes 6 to 12 had their celebration.

The students were seated in a decorative enclosure, which had a stage, with a beautiful backdrop. Students were seated according to their classes.

The teachers organized a variety programme for both the days. The programme began with a prayer service and explaining the observance of the birthday of Jawaharlal Nehru. This was followed by an entertainment programme, comprising of nursery rhyme act, fashion parade, classical fusion and western / bollywood dances, a skit and also a Mando. Students were also enthralled by a live band, and tapped and danced to the tunes of the songs.

INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR TOLERANCE International day for tolerance was observed on 16th November 2016, at Vidya Vikas Academy. A special Assembly was held by the students of class 6A.

International day for tolerance is observed to educate people about the need for tolerance in society and to help them understand the negative effects of intolerance.

Janvi Naik Dalal explained about the importance of this day and the meaning of tolerance. Sakshi Borkar recited a poem on ‘Being tolerant ‘and a group of students presented the song “Heal the world”. Stuti Agarwal accompanied on the keyboard and Dona Chatterjee with the guitar.

VVA at 3MTR Students of Class 8 of Vidya Vikas Academy (VVA) were invited by the Commanding Officer of the 3MTR (Military Training Regiment, Navelim) to the passing out parade of the Basic Training for the new recruits.

They witnessed an impressive ceremony which included flag march, drills and band display. The students got an opportunity to interact with the Commanding Officer and other officer and their families.

It is hoped that some of our students would be inspired to join the Defence Services to whom we Indians owe a deep debt of gratitude for their selfless service to the nation. Staff Co-ordinator: Omanakuttan G.

VVA’s UNIQUE CHILDREN’S DAY GESTURE VVA’s Snehadhara Programme motivated our students to remember less privileged children and as a part of their own children’s day celebrations, they collected provisions and other useful household items to share with the children at Vanarmare, Nirankal, Ponda Goa.

They visited Vanarmare on November 19, 2016, met the tribes and were deeply moved on hearing their story and seeing the poverty and lack of basic amenities for a descent life. Co-ordinator: Mrs. Tania Monteiro, Vice-Principal

VVA CHILDREN SECURE 2ND PLACE IN INTER-SCHOOL GK QUIZ Objective: Creating an atmosphere of learning the world around.

Students of Vidya Vikas Academy, Sriya Rallabandi and Nicole Lourenco from Class 9 participated at a inter- school General knowledge quiz. The GK Quiz was organised by the Parent- Teacher Association of Mushtifund High School on 19th November 2016.

A total of 15 schools participated in the quiz. There was a preliminary written round and the top 11 schools qualified for the 1st oral round. The qualifying schools were split into two groups and the best three from each group made it to the stage. The quiz comprised of visuals, matching nicknames and rapid fire rounds. WORLD TELEVISION DAY November 21 is celebrated as “WORLD TELEVISION DAY”. A special assembly was conducted on 21st Nov, 2016 by the pupils of class 4A and attended by students of class 3 and 4.

The assembly began with a short prayer.

“Telecasting” – an improvement on “Broadcasting”, the history of televisions, the T.V models down the ages, nine reasons why the world loves watching it, the good and the bad effects of watching, channels children should watch and the importance of the day was highlighted.

The programme was telecasted / broadcasted in English, Konkani and Hindi with beautiful background setup and appropriate props.

It was both entertaining and informative. We concluded with a beautiful poem – TURN OFF THE TV ! by Bruce Lansky. Co-ordinator: Clotilda Goes

CONSTITUTION DAY QUIZ As per the decision of the Government of India to celebrate 26th day of November every year as the Constitution Day to promote Constitutional Values among citizens, Vidya Vikas Academy conducted Constitution Day Quiz on 26th November 2016 for the students of Classes 6 to 12.

The quiz was conducted in two categories, Classes VI to VIII and Classes IX to XII. The quiz questionnaire was downloaded from the link provided by CBSE site. All together 100 students participated in the quiz. The quiz was assessed based on the answer key provided by CBSE and the results were declared. Three winners in each category were selected based on the highest scores and their names were uploaded on the CBSE website.

The quiz made the students aware about the Article 51-A and the Constitution of India. Mr. Mitendra Alve and Tr. Sheetal Kumar co-ordinated the quiz activity for Classes 9 to 12 while Mrs. Tania Monteiro, Vice-Principal along with the Class teachers co-ordinated the activity for Classes 6 to 8.

PAINTING CONTEST AT NAVY CHILDREN’S SCHOOL Students of Vidya Vikas Academy participated in the painting contest held on 26th November 2016 at Navy children school Vasco.

Krish Ballikar (5A) and Sarathi Faldesai (5A) participated in category A, Sandra Fernandes (8B) and RonishaPaes (8B) participated in category B. PratyushaVenigalla (9C) and Vaughn Fernandes (10A) participated in category C.

The themes for the posters were Swachh Bharat, Digital India and Indian Armed Forces respectively. Sandra Fernandes bagged the 3rd prize while Ronisha Paes bagged the consolation prize for their posters on Digital India. All the students put up a wonderful performance. ALL GOA INTER-SCHOOL ELOCUTION COMPETITION The All Goa Inter School Elocution Competition was held on the 26th Nov. 2016 organised by the Lion’s Club of Nuvem-Verna was a great learning experience for Mast. Clyde Rodrigues, who represented Vidya Vikas Academy.

“There were many to choose from but I choose the topic ‘Happiness is the essence of life’ says Clyde.

There were a number of schools that participated and the competition was a tough one. Clyde Rodrigues emerged as a winner. He won a Rolling Trophy for the School as well as an individual trophy.

SAMRAAT STUDENT AWARD – GRAZIELLE SERRAO The Samraat Student Foundation and Samraat Club of Margao felicitated the ‘Samraat Student of the year’, the most cultured, disciplined and best student of the year 2016-2017 projected as the ideal citizen of tomorrow.

The function was held on 27th Nov.,2016 at 10:31am at Dr. Francisco Luis Gomes Hall, District Library, Navelim, Salcete Goa.

Grazielle Serrao of Class 9C was awarded this prestigious award. She was selected on the basis of the criteria sent to us by the Samaarat Club, Margao. Staff Co-ordinator: Calorina Rodrigues

NAVHIND TIMES QUIZ The Navhind Times provided a platform for the brightest minds from across Goa to showcase their knowledge by taking part in an annual event under various exciting panels.

The students of Vidya Vikas Academy accompanied by teacher in-charge Miss. Farheen participated at a Quiz competition.

The quiz was conducted at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao on 29th November 2016 to choose the finalists of 3 talukas, Sanguem, Canacona and Salcete. Seven teams from VVA participated in the quiz. There was a preliminary written round which was common to the teams from all 3 talukas. The best team from the top six schools of each taluka qualified for the semi-final round.

Karthik Hede and Shameek Borkar of Class 10 qualified for the Salcete semi-final. There was a tough competition in the semi-finals and our school secured 2nd place. Unfortunately only the team that secured 1st place could qualify for the finals which were to be held in Panjim.

QUIZ – MIXED BAG – ACTIVITY FOR NOVEMBER 2016 – CLASSES 1 TO 5

The objective of quiz competition is to encourage students to look beyond their textual knowledge and establish a relationship between theory and application of the learnt concepts.

Quizzes are designed to promote, a fun way to study and in the process help improve one’s general knowledge Quiz competitions enables students to think from different angles or simply ‘to think out of the box’.

Class teachers conducted the premiere round of the above mentioned Quiz in their respective classes by Friday, 25th November 2016 and handed over the names of the winners.(The best five pupils from each class)

The Final round of the Quiz was conducted in the school hall for the following classes: 1) Class 5 A B C - Tuesday, 29th November, 2016 2) Class 4 A B C - Wednesday, 30th November, 2016 3) Class 3 A B C - Thursday, 1st December, 2016

VVA STUDENTS EXCEL AT SCIENCE EXHIBITION The Eleventh Annual Science Exhibition was organized by Shree Damodar Higher Secondary School of Science, Comba, Margao in association with Department of Science, Technology and Environment, Govt. of GOA at Babu Naik Hall, Davorlim on 29th November 2016 and 30th November 2016.

Students of Vidya Vikas Academy from Class 5 to 12 participated in three categories with enthusiasm. There were 120 exhibits all together. The details of exhibits of students of VVA are as follows:-

The prize consisted of a trophy for the 1st and 2nd place along with a cash prize. Other winners were given a cash prize only. The certificates were given to all the participants and the teachers who accompanied the students.

Mrs.Shilpa Sukumaran and Mrs. Carolina Rodrigues from Secondary section and Miss. Joyce Fernandes from Senior Secondary section accompanied the students for the exhibition.

It was a wonderful experience for our students as they gained knowledge by exhibiting and sharing their ideas with students of other schools. Teachers also had interaction with the Science teachers of the other schools. Co-ordinator: Mrs. Shilpa Sukumaran.

POSTER MAKING CONTEST Students of Vidya Vikas Academy participated in the save electricity poster making contest conducted in school during the month of November 2016.

Category A was for students from class 4 to 6 and category B was for students from class 7 to 9. Students showed a good response.

Entries that were selected at school level competition were: Shanelle Martis (6A) Charlotte Barreto (6C) and Renecia Rodrigues (6C). – Category A Chiara Rodrigues (8C) and Marison D’ Souza (7C) – Category B

Chiara Rodrigues was selected at the district level and she represented our school at the state level competition held in November at Taleigao. She was awarded a certificate of participation and a gift. Co ordinator: Hema Cacodkar

SENIOR SECONDARY SECTION

WILD WISDOM QUIZ Wild Wisdom Quiz 2016 was initiated in 2008 and is the only National Wildlife Quiz Competition in India. The objective of the Wild Wisdom Quiz 2016 is to raise awareness about flora and fauna among Indian Students and to inculcate a sense of pride amongst Indian students about India’s rich cultural heritage. Wild Wisdom Quiz is organized by the WWF India in association with Ministry of Forests and Climate Change and Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

The Students of Class XI participated in the Wild Wisdom Quiz on 4th and 5th November 2016. Phase 1 was conducted online on both the days based on topic ‘Evolution and Biodiversity’.

NATIONAL EDUCATION DAY Education is not the preparation for life; education itself is life. Keeping this quote in mind, Vidya Vikas Academy Senior Secondary Section celebrated National Education Day. This Day is observed on 11th November of every year in honour of our 1st Education Minister of Independent India, Abul Kalam Azad.

The special assembly was conducted on 9th November, 2016. The assembly began with the beautiful thought “Formal Education will make you a living and self education will make you a fortune” followed by an article on objectives of National Education Day. An inspiring video was shown to the students on importance of education. The assembly ended with all the students singing the National Anthem together.

SCIENCE INTERNSHIP CAMP One of the components of “Scheme for Early Attraction of Talent for Science (SEATS)” is INSPIRE Internship, in which annually about 50,000 students of the top 1% performers in Class X board examinations, pursuing science at higher Secondary level are given an exposure with leaders in science through camps, so as to let them experience the joy of innovations. The two of us, Cheyenne Rodrigues and Aditi Naik, attended the five-day camp from November 7 to November 11, 2016, at CSIR- National Institute of Oceanography, Dona Paula. The science camp essentially nourished our curiosity in science and helped us to think out of the box.

We had the honour of being addressed by Dr. S. Prasanna Kumar, the director of CSIR-NIO, Goa. We also got to interact with many other eminent persons like Prof. Alok Dhawan- Director of CSIR: Indian Institute of Toxicology Research, Lucknow, Prof. Kamat- Professor of Organic Chemistry, Engr. Atharva Umesh Pathak, Dr. Rajiv Nigam- Ex-Deputy Director and Chief Scientist of CSIR-NIO, Goa, Dr. Rahul Mohan- Project Director of NCAOR, Vasco da Gama, Dr. N. Ramaiya- Deputy Director and Head BOD of CSIR-NIO, Goa, Prof. K. M. Paknikar, Prof. T. J. Pandian- a Bhatnagar Awardee, Dr. Rahul Sharma – Chief Scientist of CSIR-NIO, Goa and Dr. Pradeep C. R.- Channabasaveshwara Institute of Technology, Gubbi.

Global competitiveness in the changing global knowledge economy calls for expansion and right-sizing of the Research and Development base of the country. Need for special interventions for attracting youth to study of natural sciences and careers with research is well recognized. INSPIRE is a Program launched by the Government of India to strengthen the National Science and Technology base.

The various topics explored by us during the camp include beaches and related hidden danger, hands-on micro scale experiments in environmental chemistry, air pollution and its effects on us and the environment, alternative and better fuels, interesting demos and hands-on activities in chemistry using micro scale techniques, amateur astronomy opportunities and some astrophotography basics, the role of sea level changes in shaping the density of ancient coastal Indian cities, Antarctica- the last frontier (the frozen continent), future oceans, bio inspired innovation in nanotechnology, scientific research leading to Nobel Prize, treasures from the sea and maths as an innovation to problem solving.

The Essay writing competition on new innovative ideas and visit to the NIO laboratories added to the fun. We saw archaeological antiquities, the flow cytometer, sequencer, foyer exhibits, the microfossils laboratory and Agricultural laboratory. In addition, we participated in a sky watching session and had an educational visit to the National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research where we saw a screening of scientific programs focused on bipolar activities and visited various laboratories. We bagged the first place in a quiz based on general knowledge.

In all, the internship camp was an amazing exposure leading us to meet students from schools from all over Goa. We made a whole lot of new friends and created memories to last many years to come. Aditi Rajeshwar Naik Class : 11 A

WORLD SCIENCE DAY 10th of November every year is observed as World Science Day for Peace and Development and it chalks down the importance of science in society. This event aims to ensure that the citizens are kept informed of developments in science and to strengthen public awareness on the role of science for peaceful and sustainable societies. This year’s theme was “Celebrating Science Centers and Science Museums”

The students of the senior secondary section of Vidya Vikas Academy conducted a special assembly on the 17th of November 2016. The students of Class 11 and 12 participated in the assembly which commenced with a prayer and pledge. There was a presentation giving a quick overview of CERN’s Large Hadron Collider. The assembly ended with all students singing the National Anthem together.

'NO SCHOOL BAG DAY' - SCIENCE EXHIBITION AND TALK The Annual Sr. Secondary Science Exhibition was held on 11th November, 2016. The students of Class XI displayed their exhibits as a tribute to our former President of India, Late Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam.

The science exhibition is organised every year with a view to encourage and inculcate a scientific temper amongst students. The students showcased their talents in Science and Technology. Our Chief Guest for the occasion was Mr. Abhay Avinash Bhamaikar, CEO of Vibrant Skill Sets Solutions and organiser of Budding Scientist of India.

The program commenced with the welcome address by the Sr. Secondary Vice Principal Mrs. Joble Bijoy. She mentioned that science exhibition is a process of being inventive, creative & thinking out of the box and enjoying science. It develops the scientific temper among students so that they could be better scientists, better citizens and capable of governing their personal thoughts and actions in a scientific manner. The traditional lamp was lit at the hands of the Chief Guest & other dignitaries. The portrait of the late President Abdul Kalam was garlanded by the Chief Guest Mr. Abhay A Bhamaikar.

General Secretaries Ms. Senia Gomes and Nathan D’sa introduced the chief guest Mr. Abhay Bhamaikar and the guest speaker Dr. Devyani D Borole to the audience. Mrs. Tania Monteiro Vice-Principal of the Secondary Section presented a potted plant as a token of appreciation from VVA to both the chief guest and the guest speaker. Mr. Abhay motivated the students with his speech. The science exhibition was inaugurated by Mr. Abhay Bhamaikar and Dr. Devyani Borole.

The exhibits were judged based on creativity, presentation, scientific thought and technical skills. Some highlights of the exhibition included Bicycle based Washing Machine, Automatic Plant Watering System, use of Coccolithophore Algae in controlling Pollution, Sugar Rocket, Laser Security, Solar Run Bicycle, Tesla Coil, Bicycle Wheel Gyroscope, etc.

Students & parents of class 9, 10, 11 & 12 were invited to view the exhibits.

Science Talk The Guest Speaker Dr. Devyani D Borole, known as a ‘POLAR WOMAN’ of India and 1st Indian Woman, visited both the permanent Antarctica stations of India (“Maitree” and “Bharati”) during the 25th and 26th expeditions. She is a recipient of the “MAHARASHTRA GAURAV PURASKAR” and “MAHARASHTRA BHUSHAN” medal from Shivputra Chhatrapati Sambhaji Raje Bahuuddyshiya Sansthan Foundation of Maharashtra. She was also awarded a “HIRKANI” award from Sahyadri Doordarshan, Mumbai in 2013.

Dr. Devayani Borole addressed the students of class XII and class X. She shared her beautiful experiences of her journey to Antarctica through a power point presentation which included lots of photos and information about the ‘Maitri’ and ‘Bharati’ Stations of India in Antarctica. She also mentioned the research work done by the Indian Scientists who were present with her during 25th Indian Antarctica “Silver Jubilee” expedition. The talk inspired all the students and also motivated them to achieve their dreams.

On this occasion of 'No School bag Day', the secondary section of VVA conducted various activities for the students in their respective classrooms.

The sports department conducted a motivational talk for the students of Class 9 and 10 in the school hall. Dr. Debashish Bagchi, Sports Director of Smt. Parvatibai Chowgule College of Arts and Science, Margao addressed the students. He made the students aware of the various career opportunities in the field of sports.

The event was co-ordinated by Tr. Shaheena Basha and Tr. Pooja Desai for the Sr. Secondary section, while Mrs. Tania Monteiro along with Class Teachers and Sports teachers co-ordinated the programme for the secondary section.

CHILDREN’S DAY Children’s Day is celebrated in India every year with great enthusiasm on 14th of November where teachers and students in the schools and colleges celebrate the same with great passion and excitement.

This day is observed as Children’s day, the birth anniversary of our first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawarharlal Nehru.

Children’s day for the Senior Secondary Section was celebrated on 15th November 2016. The students assembled at the ground at 9.00am. The teachers’ organized and performed dances and skit to entertain the students. Spot prizes and live music added tons of enjoyment and excitement to the celebration.

The event concluded with distribution of refreshments to the students.

WESTERN INDIA SCIENCE FAIR State Council of Educational Research and Training, Goa in collaboration with Goa Science Centre, Miramar, Goa and Nehru Science Centre, Mumbai organised State Level Western Science Fair 2016-2017 on 23rd, 24th and 25th November 2016. The main objective of this programme was to generate interest among the participants & visitors towards various aspects of science and mainly to build a platform for the interested students on various scientific projects/queries.

Two projects from Sr. Secondary Section of Vidya Vikas Academy were selected for this program. Dionisio Ribeiro from Class 11 presented his Solar Run Scooter and Siya Prabhudesai / Tania Dourado from Class 12 presented their project on generating electricity through speed breakers. The students were awarded with participation certificates.

The students found the experience enriching.

SINGING COMPETITION The Rosary Higher Secondary School organized an inter higher secondary school singing competition, themed “Voices in Harmony”. The competition was held on the 26th of November 2016 and 15 students from the higher secondary section participated in the competition.

The event started at 9 am and ended by 12:30 pm. The different higher secondary schools were named after different bands and our higher secondary was named Bonny M. The students were accompanied by Tr. Joyce Fernandes.

All the participants were awarded a participation certificates.

NATIONAL CONSTITUTION DAY The Constitution Day, also known as the Samividhan Divas, is celebrated in India on 26th November every year, to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution of India. On this day in 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India adopted the Constitution of India, and it came into effect on 26 January 1950.

On the occasion of the Constitution Day of India, a special assembly was held on the 26th November 2016 for the students of Higher Secondary Section. The assembly started with prayer and the pledge. The assigned student read the preamble while the other students repeated the same in English and in Hindi.

The assembly concluded with the singing of the National Anthem.

To create further awareness on the Constitution Day, a debate session was held for the students of class 11 on the 28thNovember 2016. The topic was “The Preamble to the Constitution”. Team ‘A’ spoke against the Preamble and team ‘B’ spoke for the Preamble. The students came up with brilliant arguments and logical explanations. This was a voluntary activity taken up by the students based on the guidelines provided by the Central Board of Secondary Education.

WORLD FISHERIES DAY Our earth is covered with 70% water and the main source of protein rich food which is ‘fish’ comes from this ocean. But due to over fishing, the count of edible fish is constantly going down, also causing danger to bi products getting destroyed such as Turtles, dolphins etc. To create awareness among people about the impending danger, November 21st of every year is celebrated as “World Fisheries Day”.

Students of Class 11 conducted a special assembly to explain the importance of fishes and aquatic life to the students. The assembly started with a prayer and pledge followed with a Skit and a Video.

The Skit was followed by a small meditation session, where all the students along with teachers prayed for world peace, health and happiness for all. The assembly concluded with National Anthem.

The assembly was co-coordinated by Mr. Mitendra Alve.
