Brit ish inf luence and control over what would become Nigeria and Afr ica's most populous country grew through the 19th century. A series of constitut ions after World War II granted Nigeria greater autonomy; independence came in 1960. Fol lowing nearly 16 years of mil i tary rule, a new consti tut ion was adopted in 1999, and a peaceful transit ion to civi l ian government was completed. The government continues to face the daunting task of reforming a petroleum-based economy, whose revenues have been squandered through corruption and mismanagement, and institut ionalizing democracy. In addit ion, Nigeria continues to experience longstanding ethnic and rel igious tensions. Although both the 2003 and 2007 presidential elections were marred by signif icant irregulari t ies and violence, Nigeria is currently experiencing its longest period of civi l ian rule since independence. The general elections of Apri l 2007 marked the f irst civi l ian-to-civi l ian transfer of power in the country's history and the elections of 2011 were generally regarded as credible. In January 2014, Nigeria assumed a nonpermanent seat on the UN Securi ty Council for the 2014-15 term.

Close t ies to France fol lowing independence in 1960, the development of cocoa production for export, and foreign investment all made Cote d' Ivoire one of the most prosperous of the West African states but did not protect i t from pol it ical turmoil . In December 1999, a mi l i tary coup - the f irst ever in Cote d' Ivoire's history - overthrew the government. Junta leader Robert GUEI blatantly rigged elections held in late 2000 and declared himself the winner. Popular protest forced him to step aside and brought Laurent GBAGBO into power. Ivorian dissidents and disaffected members of the mil i tary launched a failed coup attempt in September 2002 that developed into a rebell ion and then a civi l war. The war ended in 2003 with a cease-f ire that left the country divided with the rebels holding the north, the government the south, and peacekeeping forces a buffer zone between the two. In March 2007, President GBAGBO and former New Forces rebel leader Guil laume SORO signed an agreement in which SORO joined GBAGBO's government as prime minister and the two agreed to reunite the country by dismantl ing the buffer zone, integrating rebel forces into the national armed forces, and holding elections.

Diff icul t ies in preparing electoral registers delayed bal lot ing unt i l 2010. In November 2010, Alassane Dramane OUATTARA won the presidential elect ion over GBAGBO, but GBAGBO refused to hand over power, result ing in a f ive-month stand-off. In Apri l 2011, after widespread f ighting, GBAGBO was formally forced from off ice by armed OUATTARA supporters with the help of UN and French forces. Several thousand UN peacekeepers and several hundred French troops remain in Cote d' Ivoire to support the transit ion process. OUATTARA is focused on rebuilding the country's infrastructure and mil i tary after the f ive months of post-electoral f ighting and faces ongoing threats from GBAGBO supporters, many of whom have sought shelter in Ghana. GBAGBO is in The Hague await ing tr ial for cr imes against humanity.
