WHO IS VINCENT VAN GOGH?

Vincent Willem van Gogh was a major

Post-Impressionist. A Dutch painter

whose work—notable for its rough

beauty, emotional honesty, and bold color

—had a far-reaching influence on 20th-

century art. After years of painful anxiety

and frequent bouts of mental illness, he

died aged 37 from a gunshot wound,

generally accepted to be self-inflicted

(although no gun was ever found).

WHAT VINCENT DID He began to draw as a child, and he continued

to draw throughout the years that led up to his

decision to become an artist. He did not begin

painting until his late twenties, completing

many of his best-known works during the last

two years of his life. In just over a decade, he

produced more than 2,100 artworks, consisting

of 860 oil paintings and more than 1,300

watercolors, drawings, sketches, and prints.

His work included self portraits, landscapes,

still lifes, portraits as well as paintings of

cypresses, wheat fields and sunflowers

WHO WAS VINCENT’S FAMILY?

Grandfather Vincent had six sons, three of whom became art

dealers, including another Vincent who was referred to in Van

Gogh's letters as "Uncle Cent". Grandfather Vincent had perhaps

been named in turn after his own father's uncle, the successful

sculptor Vincent van Gogh (1729–1802).[15][16] Art and religion

were the two occupations to which the Van Gogh family

gravitated. His brother Theodorus "Theo" was born on 1 May

1857. He had another brother, Cor, and three sisters: Elisabeth,

Anna, and Willemina "Wil".

WHEN DID VINCENT DIE?

The death of Vincent van Gogh, the Dutch post-

Impressionist painter, occurred in the early morning

of 29 July 1890, in his room at the Auberge Ravoux

in the village of Auvers-sur-Oise in northern France.

He suffered a gunshot wound two days before the

date of his death, not far from the local inn. It has

always been assumed that he shot himself in the

chest, wishing to end his life.

MY REFLECTION

I think that Vincent Van Gogh’s arts were all great

they all had foreground, landscape, montage,

portrait, and tension. They were all amazingly

detailed whether it be a person or a scenery. I also

think that he was a great artist who captured

incredible details of the scenery or the people.
