The Mission of the Vine & Branches Area Faith Community
empowered by the Holy Spirit is to bear fruit that will last as Jesus commanded:
by celebrating and proclaiming our Catholic faith as disciples of Jesus using our God-given gifts;
by reaching out to and welcoming all people; and by centering our lives on the Eucharist,
sacraments, scripture, service and the teaching of the Church.

From the Pastor
There comes a time in our lives, hopefully, before we are consciously taking their last breath, when we
realize our life is not our own. We belong to a far greater Mystery than we can ever begin to comprehend.
This week, and in particular, Wednesday, during the Ordination Anniversary Celebration, was that kind of a
time for me.
I am uncomfortable even writing “My 40th Anniversary as a Priest,” because it is ultimately not mine. It
is a sharing in Christ’s priesthood which, by divine design is a gift to the whole Church. The calling gifts
and talents needed to serve as a priest come from above and are received by a individual and by the Commu-
nity of the Church. This is especially evident in our case because I have had the privilege to return to my
home-town roots, and there be gladly received and sustained by the people that I serve. I could not have
foreseen this journey 40 years ago. And I certainly am in awe and filled with gratitude beyond words, and
even beyond tears for the ways you have expressed your appreciation and support.
I can’t believe how many showed up… Some coming long distances amidst very busy schedules and
commitments. I am humbled by your response to a simple invitation. It reminds me again of the connec-
tions we have made which are sustained by God’s design in the ministry of a shared priesthood that brings
people together in joys and sorrows. Thank you to each one of you who came or had a part in making it hap-
pen.
Especially thank you to the committee, Judy Lipetzky, Jim Miesen, Kathy Hillesheim, Maxine Meine,
Sharon Pieschel, Kahla Petersen, Amy Vogel, Sister Shirley Steins, and Sue Imker, who stepped up and took
charge to make it a very remarkable expression of an Area Faith Community in action . Be patient as I get
back to you with a personal note of thanks. I am still in recovery from all the attention and of course life
goes on with funeral, weddings, baptisms and little golfing or goofing off on the side.
In awe and gratitude to you, I love you all, and to our God who is ever faithful and true,
~Father Phil Schotzko
From Sister Shirley:
Farm Mass
Hope your calendar is marked for Wednesday, June 21 for the Farm Mass at 7:00 pm at Sue and Jim
Imker’s farm. Everyone is invited to join us in praising God for the beauty of the earth and enjoy the
friendship of our Area Faith Community. Directions to Sue and Jim’s farm: Coming from Spring-
field on Highway 14, turn right at the Lamberton Motel on County 6. Drive through town and make a right
turn on 15 after passing the junk yard onto the gravel road. Sue and Jim’s farm is the first farm site on the left.
Be sure to bring a lawn chair. Looking forward to welcoming all of you for an enjoyable evening. Signs will
be posted with directions.
Grateful Thanks to everyone who signed up to clean a special place in our church, parish hall, kitchen and
parish house. There are a few jobs available if anyone has not had an opportunity to sign up for a special clean-
ing place. It’s amazing how quickly the work is completed when everyone participates. Thanks again for your
involvement. Any questions, please contact Teresa Wenisch or Mary Arnoldi.
As you have noticed there are a number of spaces available to sign up for mowing the parish lawns. I greatly
appreciate the volunteers who have been mowing and those who will be signing up to mow soon. God bless
you for your generosity.
“The entire material universe speaks of God’s love, his boundless affection for us. Soil, water, moun-
tains: everything is as it were, a caress of God.” Pope Francis – Laudato Si

Dear Pope Francis The Pope answers letters from children around the
world
Dear Pope Francis, Why do we venerate the Cross? How are you? I am fine. Yours, Tadiwanashe, age 10, Zimbabwe
Dear Tadiwanashe,
We venerate, or honor, the Cross because Saint Paul
says that the Cross is our glory. The Cross is the
place where Jesus won and achieved his victory over
evil and death. In the Olympics, winners are placed
on a higher step and given a beautiful trophy. In this
case, Jesus’ trophy is his Cross, his triumph. With his
death on the Cross, Jesus conquered death. He won!
The Cross is the sign of this victory, and that’s why
we venerate it. So, we glory in the Cross. The devil
has been defeated, and for this reason he is afraid of
the Cross. It is the sign of his defeat.
Francis

June 21 7:00pm Farm Mass You may have noticed Greg Roiger, the
head of maintenance, keeping the grass
trimmed with a new mower. We have
known for a while now that we wanted
to replace the old one because it was inadequate to
the tasks asked of it and was often breaking down and
costing us a lot every year in repairs. We now have a
new Cub Cadet with snow blower, cab and leaf col-
lection attachments. It is designed for heavy duty
work and set us back a little over $6,000 after trade
in. We had one parishioner step up with a $1,000 gift
to help cover this expense. And we would be very
grateful for any others who might be moved to con-
sider a special additional gift for this needed upgrade.
Thank you, Fr. Phil

Summer Organ Lessons
The Diocese of New Ulm will again be offering Sum-
mer Organ Lessons. Summer Organ Lessons are a
great opportunity for pianists wanting to learn the
organ, or for organists who would like to improve
their technique. Parish musicians are especially en-
couraged to participate. Vatican II declared that
the pipe organ is to be held in “high esteem” as the
“traditional instrument” of the Latin rite. In light of
this, the organ ought to be used regularly in parish
liturgies. Lessons are 5 for $50 with the option of
adding up to three additional lessons for $10/lesson.
Brochures are available through your parish office.
Forms are due June 23, 2017.
