VALVE-IN-PISTON COMPRESSORS

The Valve-In-Piston (VIP®) compressor was introduced in 1993 as a small unit for the Dresser-Rand line-up of gas field compressors. A combination of field-proven success and new advanced design techniques has enabled development of a complete line of VIP compressors, ranging from 15,400 (68 kN) to 45,000 (200 kN) pounds rod load. Since its introduction, more than 1,000 VIP cylinders have been produced for the gas field market.

Dresser-Rand’s VIP compressor design has a lower percentage of clearance when compared with conventional “valve- in-barrel” cylinders. This translates into higher volumetric efficiency and performance for each cylinder size. VIP compressors also have inherently lower reciprocating weights which result in fewer unbalanced moments and reduced vibration. The result is a highly efficient, smooth-running compressor.

A streamlined system that reduces weight, increases efficiency, and is easy to maintain.

“A Stroke of Genius”

VIP compressors have fewer parts than those with conventional cylinders. For most compressor cylinder types this may mean 40 fewer parts. The VIP units have only four compressor valves, regardless of bore size, whereas many other cylinders have as many as 16 valves. There also are no valve covers on VIP compressors; this feature eliminates potential gas leak paths. Fewer parts coupled with fewer valves means lower maintenance costs for VIP compressor owners.

The success of the VIP line is the result of product development using advanced design tools, exhaustive laboratory testing, and field reliability of the complete line-up of Dresser-Rand’s VIP compressors.

That’s why we believe the VIP compressor to be “A Stroke of Genius.”
